So I have been a fan of the games lore for years now. And recently I bought the first game and am loving it. But I wonder, with all the criticism is the second game even worth playing after I’m done with 1? Or should I do The Beast instead? For more context I’m not too involved in the community so I don’t know if DL2 is good or not. I have just seen some things where people heavily criticize it. So help is appreciated

(This was not what chapter 2 was planned to be but due to watching The Mugen Train Arc with my family, and their mispronunciation of Rengoku, I had to do this)

After Dinner at the noodle shop, Omega and Ranni continued on their journey for about a week. Eventually they came across a small hidden village and Ranni, was, thrilled to say the least.

“Wait a damn second, THATS A VILLAGE! WOO! NO TREE BED TONIGHT!“

She exclaimed pumping her arms into the air with a stupid grin. However she paused as she saw that look etched onto Omega’s face. The look she knew all too well. This place, it brought memories. it was Rangoo Village.

“Hey, come on man, I’m with you. We need someone to rest. You’re human you know?”

Her tone came out more gentle than normal though it still carried that slight playful edge. At this he looked up to her and simply nodded. Even in the midst of his trauma, he knew she was still there with him. And that was all he needed.

As they walked into town all eyes were on them. the Rangoolians did not often see visitors. And it was certainly there first time seeing a woman with actual cat ears. However Ranni picked up on the fact, some of those little people, looked at Omega with a sense of recognition. And yet, none of them dared interact with him. When they got to the Inn and stepped inside they were immediately blasted in the face with the loud yelling of

“UMAI”

It was the flame hashira, Kyojuro Rengoku. He was eating some kind of dough while a Rangoolian chef stood near with a pleased expression on his face. Omega froze. Unable to move or barely even think until he muttered out,

“Kyojuro-“

His voice was quiet but deep as it carried his weary weight within it. Upon hearing his name the Hashira immediately turned to see, and what he saw… his former student. He stood up slowly before in the blink of an eye he was right in front of the two. Without giving them time to react he grabbed Omega and yanked him into a hug.

“It’s been a long time, Kiba. And here you stand strong, you’ve grown.”

Kyojuro’s calm but firm words were something that Omega had missed dearly. He did not speak but eventually the embrace released and Ranni’s face was one of pure confusion. She was not aware that Omega had been acquainted with the Flame Hashira. She also did not know why he was not attacking them, they were wanted rouges after all. And the thing that confused her the most, was that name. Kiba.

“Wait a minute what the hell is going on here?! Master Flame Hashira I think you have the wrong man, his name is not Kiba, it’s Omega.“

“Actually”

“Thats my name. Kiba. Omega… i-it’s just a nickname”

His soft response did not even let Kyojuro respond. He did not need to. He understood now. As Ranni lost her mind over this new information the snow began to fall as the Rangoolians gathered at the village center around a massive tree and began to sing. Kyojuro Explained that, the people of Rangoo village celebrated Christmas heavily and this was one of their traditions. In the midst of the soothing voices Kyojuro rented a room for the pair to stay in overnight. He would not report their presence to the corps this time. The rest of the night was quiet in that room. Kiba and Ranni sitting with their thoughts Until they fell asleep. Well tried to. Kiba was visibly uncomfortable and cold. So to try to soothe him Ranni went over with her blanket to his side of the bed to lay back to back with him. Trying to warm him up a bit, and eventually it worked, the mutual comfort and respect lulled them both to sleep swiftly.

However, as they were trained to, they woke up at midnight, the snow was still falling, but they had to go. So they swiftly cleaned up the room, they did not have to, but they did because that’s who they were. When they walked outside upon their checkout the snow crunched softly beneath their feet, Kiba couldn’t tell why, but something felt off, wrong. like they needed to leave. Ranni was on the edge too, if something truly unsettled Kiba it wasn’t a good sign. But soon a swift breeze harder than usual flew past them, slashing vertically across Kiba’s mouth as a cloaked figure appeared. It was clad in long dark brown hair with black accents, akin to Kiba’s own. When it turned around it’s piercing grey eye peered into his, almost ignoring Ranni entirely.

“Hmm. For some reason I expected more. Such slow perception. And after coming all this way, it seems you are just a foul slayer. Not even strong.”

He spoke with a tired yet steeled and calm tone, his voice was mesmerizing. He fully turned to them now. His left eye was shut and scared over. And yet Ranni could sense he was a demon, so why would he have scaring? Without another millisecond wasted she immediately attempted the first form of Thunder breathing. Slashing the tall man’s neck but not decapitating him. However she froze right after. She couldn’t move. Her eyes looked down to her gut, all she saw was red. She fell backwards while coughing blood, making Kiba freeze in pure shock.

“You, woman. You use the fasted breathing style, and still get tagged that badly mid technique? Foul mortal.”

The man spoke again, while raising his hand, long nails coated in fresh blood. He turned his gaze immediately to Kiba when he bolted faster than even he could see, but not to attack him, rather to go to Ranni. Kiba wasn’t speaking, but he was crying slowly and breathing rapidly. He cradled Ranni close with his one arm, feeling her breathing slow and eyes droop closed. Then… her ears fell back, went limp. And with this, Kiba looked up eyes burning with a silent wrath.

“I will kill you for this.”

When Kiba spoke it was slow but deep and guttural. Then in a flash faster than expected he had used second form of flame breathing to remove the man’s hand. He instantly dashed back and retreated, not because of the raging being pursuing him relentlessly now, but because he sensed another powerful life form nearby, one he would rather not right.

“I’m so sorry Ranni… I…“
Soon Kiba’s thoughts were clouded with rage and he couldn’t even think as he just kept running after the demon.

The setting sun set the ramshackle rooftops of Kintsugi Village alight in a beautiful amber hue mixed with that calming faint magenta the dusk always gave. The scent of the steaming noodles filled the small sit down restaurant like a comforting presence, forevermore there. The pair was sat down on the old yet soft stools waiting for their meal to be ready. However he was anxious, leg bouncing quietly but furiously,

“You really need to lighten up, we’re safe here. You know that right?“

She spoke in that same firm and slightly agitated voice as always, yet there was more care to it than usual. Showing her concern for him despite her gruff expression. He offered no verbal response, but he gripped his leg to force it to stop idling as he peered off into the distance wearily; eyes never seeming to leave the door.

”What are you deaf now? Omega. Omega!”

The second she rose her voice even a little he immediately made eye contact and spoke softly.

“S-Sorry, Ms. Shinoda. I’ll try to be more present.”

The usual shy stutter in his voice was there yet. She let out an exasperated sigh, she had told him to call her by her first name countless times. However instead of reminding him she decided to stay silent and just offer a look of understanding. Almost giving permission for them to leave if he truly felt too uncomfortable. But he remained where he sat, his gaze wandering watchfully. Eventually the server came over with their noodles; both of them got broiled beef udon with extra kikurage. As they are the conflicting textures and flavors brought that sense of fulfillment that only a warm meal brings. They slowly ate, taking their time to appreciate the rare chance to eat a well cooked meal.

By the time it was time to leave Omega reached for his pocket but then realized his wallet was gone. He remembered awkwardly bumping into a stumbling man earlier.

“Dammit. That drunk earlier… I think he stole my wallet.”

At this quiet statement her ears twitched slightly before she let out a dramatic sight before mumbling her iconic catchphrase with a smirk, before continuing

“Call it Bad Luck. Regardless I’ll cover it this time. But for the sake of the Buddha please start keeping track of your money, seriously man. You earn that money.”

Her tone was more caring than scolding. She was not mad at him, just worried one of these days if he does not pay more attention something bad will happen. But alas she pulled out her own simple wallet and left exactly enough to cover the bill with a small tip as well. As they walked out the door, to her surprise he spoke to her,

“Ranni… thank you.”

His words were quick and almost inaudible. But she knew they meant a lot. Especially the fact that he finally called her by her first name.

“You’re welcome… but seriously stop losing your money”
