Tokito wasn’t a nice Hashira

Before everyone comes after me, before everyone gets angry, yes, he was a very powerful Hashira—the Hashira with the greatest potential considering his age. Yes. But when it came to being a good person, he wasn’t a good person. He wasn’t a Hashira who cared about people’s lives.
And this is because his mindset, being similar to that of his deceased brother, was primarily focused on completing the mission, unlike someone like Rengoku, who would probably clash with this attitude the most.

Rengoku could fail the mission and let the demon escape, but as long as he didn’t lose any lives, he still considered it a victory. As he himself says in Mugen Train.

Tengen does lose some lives in the Entertainment District, and he makes sure to defeat the demon, but again, he prioritizes lives in a specific order. Obviously, his wives come first, then any civilians who can be saved without putting his wives at risk of dying, and finally, he puts himself and the mission as a whole last. Defeating the demon isn’t the absolute priority. The absolute priority is having survivors and saving as many people as possible.

However, Tokito wasn’t like that. Tokito was willing to let people die, even when he could save them, if they interfered with the main objective of the mission: defeating the demon as quickly as possible. Losing people he considered especially powerful or strictly necessary would mean that they were expendable.

In other words, civilians were expendable if he had to choose between protecting them and defeating the demon as quickly as possible.
We see this with Kotetsu, when he tries to leave him behind, and Tanjiro’s words trigger memories that begin breaking through the amnesia Tokito had been living with for several years.

This isn’t necessarily a criticism of the character himself, but if the mission were at stake—if there were a chance that the demon might escape for even a moment—and the other option was saving you or saving all of us in general, he would have left us to die in order to defeat the demon.

Vile moments in KNY

The post about Koku-monster got me thinking about this question. Is there anything in KNY that you find repulsive? Something more disgusting than eating people.

Do you think Akaza could gain a monster form like Kokushibou if he let himself fully regenerate?

After Kokushibou got beheaded he regenerated and turned into a monster and after Akaza was decapitated they still had to fight his headless body and Tanjiro said it was like Akaza was trying to evolve, and Akaza did regenerate half his head before ultimately accepting defeat, but if he hadn’t and fully regenerated would a monster form be the next step or would he stay as is without being susceptible to decapitation

Demon Creation

Something I’ve been curious about for a little while:

When Kokushibo converts Kaigaku into a demon, he mentions that it takes varying amounts of time based on the Demon Slayer. He also mentions that in some rare cases, people just “can’t” become demons.

Both of these statements interest me.

For one, this implies that at least one other breathing user has been turned prior to Kaigaku and after Koku. Otherwise he would have just told Kaigaku it would be 3 days. Obviously this breathing user (or users) is now dead, but I am curious as to what kind and when it would have happened. I think you could even expound upon the thought a little, and reign in people who believe Kaigaku, given more time, would have beaten Akaza and claimed UM 3 at least. Well, if my theory is correct, that there indeed were other breath using demons over the past several centuries, they were either killed by Hashira (and therefore not on Akaza’s level) or challenged him and failed. It would seem to indicate a breath user becoming a demon does not automatically equal greatness.

As for people who can’t become demons; anyone got any theories? I can’t imagine it’s tied to physical strength, even though Muzan likes to say stuff like “can you withstand the amount of blood I’m giving you”, and Daki, Gyutaro, and Akaza were all basically at death’s door when converted. Blood type related? Marechi blood? Maybe, but then again demons crave Marechi so it doesn’t seem incompatible. I have other thoughts but don’t want to ramble. Thoughts?

Did you feel sorry for any of the demons when they died?

Which demon's death truly upset you? Why?

And whose death made you especially happy?

The answer to the first question is probably most often "Akaza," and to the second, "Kaigaku" and "Douma"...

Douma and alcohol

I read that Douma, as a human, loved sake (no doubt about it), but after becoming a demon, he couldn't drink it anymore.

But Tamayo managed to learn to drink tea again. It's strange that such a powerful demon as Douma who could break down any poisons couldn't learn to drink sake again.

I wonder why.

Or maybe Muzan wouldn't allow it, because Douma drunk is too much.

Muzan could barely stand him sober...

My ranking of their fights and appearances (anime mostly but I have read the manga and am including it.)

Please note that one being above the other is not me saying they were necessarily better written, just my enjoyment and thoughts of them.

Reasoning:

Muzan had a really good final battle, I liked his appearances throughout the show and manga of him blending in as well as his interactions.

Akaza imo is the best upper moon, his fights in the infinity castle and against rengoku. I also think his backstory was the most interesting.

Gyutaro had one of the best arcs and fights in the series, though since daki got slightly more focus there could've been more time with him to flesh out his personality as well as they did with his backstory.

Douma did great, had a good dynamic with inosuke and was generally really interesting as a whole. He did need more time to explore his cult and things like that, plus his final fight is relatively lacking in emotional beats when they really could've used his connection to inosuke a lot more.

Hantengu had one of the weaker back stories and weakest arcs but he made up for it with a really interesting and op bda as well as a decent fight after zohakuten.

I DON'T THINK KOKUSHIBO WAS WORSE THAN HANTENGU

Just for clarification. I really enjoyed kokushibo, he had prescence, a good backstory and bda, but I personally really found his final fight weak compared to what it could be. In truth, I think the staggering plot armor for the slayers really minimized his threat and that while the end of the fight was just fine, it was really sudden. Should've been one of if not the best fight.

These two are bums and the designs don't hit that hard.
