Meet Mauro Morandi, who spent 33 years living alone on an island, simply because he didn't want to talk to anyone

Mauro Morandi, an Italian man who became known as the "Robinson Crusoe of Italy". He lived in near-total isolation on the stunning, pink-sand island of Budelli off the coast of Sardinia. After his catamaran broke down in 1989, he fell in love with the island and decided to stay as its unofficial caretaker to escape consumerism and human interaction.

Morandi spent over three decades living in a former World War II shelter, surviving on solar power, reading, writing, and tending to the island's fragile ecosystem. Though he occasionally interacted with passing tourists to educate them about nature, his main goal was to avoid the noise and superficiality of modern society.

His hermit lifestyle eventually ended in 2021 when the island was transferred to a national park authority and he was evicted. He was forced to move back to a small apartment on the nearby island of La Maddalena, where he passed away in early 2025 at the age of 85.
