If your adult child was a 'NEET' how would you navigate the situation?
Essentially the term NEET means not in work or education I didn't even realise what it means until recently as a 23m. Anyhow my friend 24m can't get a job for love nor money and went to college but dropped out and has been looking for jobs for 3+years to no avail.
We live in Cambridgeshire in a very rural location and in fairness to him it's hard to get a job here as there's no industry and everywhere is closing up however he can get the train to cities and bigger towns if needed as he doesn't have a car license.
Regardless he sits in his room everyday doomscrolling and playing videogames as well as ordering in takeaways and says he feels like he's watching his life waste away in real-time but feels like there's nothing he can do about it as he's applied to 100s of jobs and still nothing and also he can't get a gf and has never had one so that playing on his mind too. furthermore my gf says she feels on edge and creeped out by him but won't say why just says she has an inkling and she can tell he's awkward around the opposite gender and that she's observed him staring at them in a certain way.
I take him out on weekends we get a meal, go for a hike and watch something at the cinema and he looks forward to that but not sure what else I can do as I only get Sundays off myself and am worked to the bone.
nonetheless there's many people from our old high school class in the same boat even the ones with degrees, it's not just him!
who the hell is gonna be flexible all week for 4 hours of work a week? 😒
What is the point of this job at wetherspoons even for a young person who is at college it's not doable. Also £50 a week you'd make more walking people's dogs. this job market is a sick joke I'm working 6 days and trying to go down to 4/5 as I'm burnt out but you either get barely any hours like this or 60+ there's no in-between. also every job wants you to work weekends these days which I dont want to do anymore at all.
If you were 30 years old, had no savings, had no gf/bf, had no car and lived at home with your parents and couldn't get a job - what would your plan be?
There's actually more people in this situation than you realise due to the sh11ty economy
This is hypothetical as I'm 23m but with this economy you could get to this point quite easily if you lose your job things can go downhill fast.

reddit.comUnemployed people of the UK, what does your day look like?
Do you structure your days...
Why do you think life doesn't hit the same anymore like it used to for you?
reddit.comAny side hustles that make $50-100?
I am already doing freelance AI training and as I can speak fluent in English, German and French it's a nice earner - I can also code at a very high level.
Any other ways to make money please comment down below as I'm trying to make as much money as possible as fast as possible and need multiple revenue streams. the more the better.
Photo I took in Hyde park October 30 2025. I can't wait for autumn to grace London again, I also am looking forward to Christmas and London winter wonderland!!
Why did you lose all your friends and become so isolated?
reddit.comI've currently got a full time job I hate and can't land another job - never seen the market this bad!
I know I'm in a better position than most but this is so strange, I'm 23m and have had 4 jobs all on my CV. My current ft job sucks as my ex purposely got a job here cos she thinks I'm still interested in her and she likes to know my whereabouts - so now I have to deal with that everyday and the job was bad enough without her here.
I've applied to jobs that are low end yet still silence. I'm thinking of ringing and going in places as applying isn't having any effect whatsoever
My friend 23m is still unable to get a job after many applications and his parents say he will be kicked out of the house if he doesn't get a job by Christmas, what can he do?
He's applied to McDonald's, warehouses, away resorts, all the bottom of the barell jobs but he still hears nothing back . He has started going to places mainly small private companies and farms to personally ask but they all ask him about experience and he hasn't got any or they say we're not taking on atm.
His gf has already left him cos he didn't get a job now his parents are getting sick and tired of him. I feel so bad for him but not much I can do as I've already asked at work and they said their not interested. He also doesn't have a driving license but can get a train and go anywhere as he has some savings not loads though.
Worst case scenario he can crash with me and my gf but my gf really doesn't want him here so that will cause tension for me. I have also said there's certain hostels that let you volunteer and you get free accommodation but they are horrendous places to be so he wants to avoid that at all costs.
What age are you and why do you feel 'behind' In life?
reddit.comWhat's your advice to adults that can't get a job no matter how many applications (100s/1000s) they send?
reddit.comHow can a 24 year old guy become a participant in life again instead of a spectator?
My friend who I've known since childhood is going through a rough patch . He lost his job as he swore at a customer and now he spends his days stuck inside his house and can't get another job even though he's sent lots of applications off. He also has depression, anxiety and antisocial personality disorder. he does get angry at times and says we are all living in an open air prison and he wish people would wake up and smell the coffee.
He is also struggling to get a gf massively which is pulling him down. He has met up with some from dating apps and after the date they all just ghost him .
He sees many people In relationships including myself and understandably he's wondering why it's not working out for him when he's putting in the effort.
Tell me I'm not the only one who's got bored of everything in recent times
I don't know man everything just seems to have got worse . Enshitiffication is the word that comes to mind.. you wake up go to work and everyday is the same then you blink then years have passed. Where as when your at school you feel like you have everything at your fingertips, you have the parties, the adventures and the hope for the future. Fyi I dont doomscroll and outside of work I try to do as much as possible which involves hiking with my gf, playing sports and doing things which I enjoy but it feels like only 5% of my time is actually good. I also have savings but even that does nothing for me because it's not life changing it's just nice to have. also going out to a restaurant cost too much now and is subpar!
Movies, TV shows and even YouTube vids feel like a chore to watch nowadays too so it's very rare I have the TV on these days.
furthermore many people I grew up with have passed away and the surviving ones barely go out anymore and have turned into phone zombies which is very sad to see as they used to be very adventurous but I can see why modern adult life can do that to people.
How would you recommend a lad in his 20s see adulthood in a better light?
My friend who is 24m has struggled to adapt into adulthood . When he was younger he thought everything would work out and it hasn't. He doesn't have a career just a bottom of the barrel job (in his own words) working at a warehouse and feeling like a robot doing the same repetitive tasks everyday and getting spoken down to by everyone. He then goes home where he still lives with his parents cos he still can't afford to move out and then that's his life. All our friendship group doesn't really meet up as much as before as it's so expensive to go for days or nights out so that doesn't help either. He then gets annoyed with me because he says I'm under the thumb with my gf and don't go out with him as much as I should and it's all getting him down how repetitive and boring adulthood really is and he doesn't get how people over 40 have done it for so long. he's also stressed out because he doesn't know what field to go into where jobs won't be axed by automation implementation.
whilst I do agree it is slightly mundane what other choice do we have but to earn money and get on with it?
None of my items are selling and many other sellers even the big established ones aren't shifting their stock either, any advice?
My account is new so I cant boost and promote my listings but everything is dead. At first I was getting 5-7 views a day but now I'm getting no new views at all.
I'm thinking of doing auctions instead, what do you think?
I did try vinted and got 720 views on 1 item on a new account in 3 days but I accidentally forgot to turn my VPN off before opening the app and got permanently banned so vinted is off the table.
Unemployed people, what does your day typically look like?
My friend 23m is unemployed and has applied to 1000+ jobs this year so far and hasn't got a job still. All week he stays stuck inside, bed rotting and usually wakes up at 3pm and goes to bed at 5am as he's gaming all night.
He's not lazy but he just isn't given a chance. I take him out on weekends when I'm off work and he super enjoys it as we go hiking many miles in gorgeous nature and quaint English towns and villages. We also get meals and go to the cinema and he does still have a spark at least this time but then when I drop him off home he doesn't want to go back as that childhood bedroom symbolises; in his own words -- failure.
I wish he would go out on his own in the week but he says he is too embarrassed and anxious to go out alone. He also doesn't have a gf as she dumped him because he wasn't paying his own way and didn't get a job in her timeframe she gave him.
at school he was super popular and sportsy and we'd be out all the time and never be in. so this is really getting to him and also he sees old classmates on social media with brand new Mercedes and BMW's who are also traveling the world. many of these do genuinely have rich parents who fund it all but it still doesn't matter he stills feels majorly behind in life either way.
P.S he's never had a job before.
