Upper cannon/rerebrace question

Hi everyone,

I had a question about the upper cannon/rerebrace style popular in the 16th century (if I'm not mistaken), like the one pictured. As far as I am aware, to allow it to pivot freely, the rerebrace consisted of a metal tube encasing the upper arm.

My question was regarding fit. Given that the human arm is not actually circular but rather oblong, does this mean there are gaps at the sides of the arms? I'm trying to picture how such a piece of armour might fit someone with large biceps/triceps, and I can only imagine it'd lead to massive gaps on either side of the arm and an enormous metal tube.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Greenwich armour pauldron and upper cannon

Hi everyone,

You may remember me from a previous post where I asked about pauldron mobility. I'm doing a bit of a deeper dive now as I refine my 3D model, especially with regards to the arm harness (fully enclosed rerebraces are fascinating, I thought essentially having a tube with circular openings would look awkward on my model but it does not).

I've been mostly referencing 16th century harnesses, especially the Greenwich armours. I had one question regarding the pauldron and upper cannon/rerebrace. On the armour faithfully replicated by the Diligent Dwarves, the upper cannon is split into two, with a rotating upmost cannon that is segmented into articulated lames and secured to the arming jacket at the top, protecting much of the upper half of the upper arm.

From what I can see, the pauldron did not lock over this with a rotating cuff arrangement like I've seen in some other harnesses and some spaulders. How then did the pauldron overlap the rerebrace in this style? Was it simply strapped over, or was there a loop the strap was fed through (as in u/VonSchlippe's excellent 16th century pauldron/rerebrace combo set). I haven't found any pictures of a Greenwich set without pauldrons, so any insight is deeply appreciated!

Question on 3D printed armour filaments

Hi everyone,

I've mostly made my armours from PETG in the past due to concerns about heat resistance (it gets hot in the summer), and I can't really print in ABS as my living situation doesn't allow me to practically make a ventilation setup.

A creator has been popping up on my Instagram feed recently who exclusively makes his props from TPU, with a lot of walls and infill so it's super stiff and basically indestructible. I was curious about using this for a suit of plate armour, for better durability than PETG, but I can't find a straight answer on how TPU holds up against summer day heat. Does anyone have any experience with cosplaying in TPU in warm weather?

Thanks in advance!

Mandalorian at Dokomi

Always a good time running around in my Mando armour. I love my Darth Revan costume as well, but in the sweltering heat of Germany at this moment, I'm afraid I would have become one with the Force. At least I've got fans in this bucket :)

Also wanted to take this opportunity to do a quick PSA: please try not to slip in front of cosplayers when walking on the con floor, especially not vision restricted ones! I get it, it's not malicious, but you risk breaking their cosplay or injuring yourself if they don't see you and crash into you! Myself I've had a few pieces snapped off by people's backpacks who are hightailing it through the merch alley, but that's fine, I just call it battle damage. Not fine if you destroy someone's beautiful wig! Please be careful out there :)

Hunting at the Dokomi

3 days of glorious fun at my favourite convention, the Dokomi. Had plenty of people come up for pics, I'd like to thank each and every one of them. To my fellow Mandos who I met, I hope the path treats you well.

Question on forward/backward shoulder mobility with pauldrons

Hi everyone,

I'm currently trying to 3D model a character of mine. I come from 2D art, so there's a lot of new considerations or things that are more important, e.g..exact clearances and placement, especially when it comes to animation.

My question relates to this style of pauldron, with the overlap on the cuirass protecting the armpit. I have a pretty good idea of how upwards/downwards mobility works with the multiple lames, but I'm scratching my head on backwards and frontwards mobility. If the shoulder is rolled forward, how does the overlap not press against the cuirass and halt movement entirely (ditto for the backplate)? Is there a vertical in addition to horizontal segmentation I'm missing?

Thank you all in advance!

Hi everyone,

I'm scratching my head on how to properly set up the rig for this front skirt here/pelvic curtain. The character has a custom rig I built from the ground up with Dikko's tutorials, so no Rigify/ARP sadly.

Given how it's slit at the thigh, it wouldn't behave like a regular skirt and move up with the leg (I've already gone through Pierre Picault's masterful skirt rig tutorials). What I'd like is that it slides off and down the thigh and thus collapses/wrinkles more towards the middle as the thigh moves up and outwards. What I have right now is the bone chains you can see in the image, controlling the skirt from the groin downwards. The first bone in these chains is parented to the lowest section of the spine, which I call DEF_hips.001.

I have no clue if this can be automated or not- all the tutorials and examples I've found online focus on skirts, not loincloth-type clothes. I don't really know what course of action is best from here.

So, I pose the question, how would you guys tackle this? Thank you all in advance!
