No Notification Banners

We recently bought a new Mac Mini. When we received mail or a message on the old Mac, we would get a banner in the upper-right-hand corner of the display. The new Mac won't do this. I've turned on Notifications and disabled Do Not Disturb, but the problem persists.

Anyone have any ideas?

Fifty years ago, there was a saying that if someone was in the Marines or went to Harvard, you would know about it in the first five minutes of conversation. What is today's equivalent?

Static IP for Calibre

Every time I restart Calibre, I get a different Content Server ip. This drives me crazy, because I have four devices and have to change the ip address every time I wanted to access Calibre via the Web server.

Today I discovered that you don't need to jump through IP hoops or set a static IP for your computer on your router. Instead, you can enter this as the address:

http://YourMacName.local:8080/opds

This works fine on both my Boox and my Apple devices.

I hope this little trick is useful.

My Cafe Oven Jusst Blew Up

Seriously. We had the oven preheating, then a geyser of flame and sparks shot across the oven from left to right for about ten seconds. The oven is completely dead. The breaker did not flip. We have had the oven for about ten years with no problem.

I tried calling the phone number in the app, who referred me to some other number, which referred me to yet another number, none of whom could help. I am very old and not in the greatest health. I don't know what to do. Someone please make some useful suggestions.

Thank you.

I like to read travel books. In Mapleread on my iPad, I can tap a word and go directly to Google Maps. Is there a plugin or a customization that would work in KOreader?

I added two dictionaries to the /storage/dicts folder. They show up in the Preferred Dictionary list. They do not show up in the Downloaded Dictionaries list. They also do not show up in the Annotation and Toolbar settings-->Default Dictionary list. Only the Onyx dictionary shows up here.

I have set the Preferred Dictionary to the Shorter Oxford and it does work when I tap on a word. But why doesn't it show up in the Downloaded Dictionary list or the Annotation setting list?

Correct me if I am wrong, but there is apparently no way to add plugins to Koreader. The only way to get the Supernote to recognize the Koreader APK is to transfer it with something like AndroidSideloader. The APK cannot just be dragged to an SD card or put into a random folder—Supernote can't find it.

Once installed with AndroidSideloader, the subfolders are not accessible, so one cannot add additional dictionaries or other plugins.

Am I correct? Or is there some super-secret method to access the subfolders?

Am I the only person who thinks that a tablet built specifically for writing and reading and lacks in-built support for dictionaries in ridiculous? Yes, I can side-load a dictionary app, and download dictionaries inside Koreader, but honestly, these are clumsy worarounds.

Worse, there is apparently no way to add dictionary packs to Koreader folders, because these aren't accessible via apps like OpenMTP.

Is it asking too much to have basic dictionary support in the Supernote PDF and ePub readers? I am simply astounded at the lack of basic reading tools.

I sucessfully installed Koreader and want to add a dictionary. I am using OpenMTP to transfer files. I can't seem to find Koreader folder in either the main storage or on the SD card, so I can't transfer the dictionary.

Where is the Koreader directory?

I want a dictionary for reading ebooks, so I want to install Koreader. There's a long list of versions (23), though. Which one do I want for the Supernote Manta?

I bought a 256GB SD card today. I formatted it with exFAT, loaded it with my entire book library, and installed it. The Manta couldn't find it. I removed the card, wiped it, and reinstalled it. The empty card was recognized immediately.

To make sure that a pre-loaded card was the problem, I removed the card, added my books, and reinstalled it. The Manta couldn't find it again. Removing and wiping the card and reinstalling it solved the problem again.

So, if you are having trouble getting the Manta to recognize your SD card, make sure it's empty before installing it.

This makes no sense, but there it is.

I am using a Boox Go Color Gen 2. I have set up PushRead to access my Calibre OPDS catalog online. This works very well and it's nice to have access to all my books.

The problem is...I'll be writing a note or reading a book, or just set the tablet down for a minute or two...and suddenly I am switched to the PushRead app.

Is there a fix for this?

I checked the documentation and I see these instructions:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Navigate to System Display (or Desktop & Screensaver on some models).
  3. Select Custom Homepage.
  4. Choose your preferred default tab (e.g., Apps, Library, Notes).
  5. You can also long-press and drag the tabs to reorder them.

Unfortunately, I don't have a Custom Homepage setting. When I press the Home ball in the Navigation bar, I get sent to the library. I've searched for an hour and can't find any way to get the nice homescreen with icons and widgets that the Boox documentation describes.

What am I missing?

I have been testing the Pocketbook reader today on my iPad Mini (I bought a Pocketbook Verse, but it's not here yet). I seem to be confused about Dropbox access. I have about 8000 ebooks in a tidy set of Dropbox folders, but it seems that Pocketbook requires the books to be in a specific folder called "PocketBook e-reader." I gather that the app cannot access other folders. Is this really the case?

I am not going to duplicate all my folders just for the Pocketbook, which would be a waste of cloud storage. Is there any workaround that I am missing?
