I think i finally found the perfect earphones for me and it’s the airpods 4 ANC

i’ll start this by saying all of the negative things that a lot of you probably already know. the battery life is not bad but it’s not great, the sound signature is very bass heavy, the anc is lackluster even compared to more budget models and they cost a lot for the features and most people should probably look elsewhere. they’re perfectly fine earbuds but by no means audiophile grade and probably not the best value

the reasons they’re perfect for me: i am technician touring with a major band. my bag space is limited and i spend a big part of my day wearing inears or earplugs. i have a pretty decent setup at home to listen to media and all i needed is something small that i could take with me.

1; the major selling point for me was that they have no eartips and just kinda sit there. after 5-6 hours of having shoved up my ears the last thing i want to do while i’m relaxing is to do that again. i want to give my ears a moment to relax and these seem to help a lot

2; absolute quiet wasn’t really the most important thing to me. all i wanted was something that’s let me listen to my music or shows while blocking the general noise from the hotel (guests, ac and such) and the noise from the street which these do. i have no idea what kind of black magic did the apple engineers do to make open earphones block noise like that but i appreciate it

3; i just wanted something i could put in my pocket and forget about. the case is small enough that i don’t notice it which is something that other manufacturers seem to struggle with and connecting them to my phone or ipad is so quick and seamless that i never even have to think about it.

all that said, for most people id give them a 6/10. perfectly fine but most people will find something better that would suit them better and unless you know that this is the exact product you should look elsewhere. at the moment they’re 8,5/10 for me. they’re the best thing to suit my needs that i’ve found at the moment but there are a plenty of flaws and i wouldn’t mind some upgrades.

this probably won’t be very helpful to many people but id love it if more companies went in this direction

i think most people are misunderstanding why screens in cars are “more premium”

i’ll preface this by saying that i hate touch screens in cars with a passion and i’ll always fight against them. i just think that people confuse the luxury of having a screen with the luxury of interacting with a screen.

physically interacting with a screen is going to feel almost the same in a top of the line luxury car, a van or the cheapest new car you can get your hands on. glass is glass and the differences are going to be quite small. compare that to the situation 20 years ago when you had to keep your car cheap and still manage to make all of your buttons feel good and tactile or the interior would be described as cheap

screens don’t provide luxury but they narrow the gap in terms of haptic feedback as everything is going to feel the same, thus making budged cars feel more premium by providing a similar experience at a fraction of the cost.

i get that screens are flashy and it’s easy to update them every year to make them seem more up to date and modern but that’s not where the luxury is

nothing about having a crappy tabled mounted to your dash is premium anymore but it provides the same feel

paper straws are great and no one should complain about them

if you’re at a restaurant or a bar and your straw starts to dissolve just ask for a new one. the cost to the bar is minuscule and i have never been to a place that would refuse to give you a new one.

if you’re ordering food and drinks to have home just get reusable straws. they cost almost nothing, they’re going to be more hygienic and in my opinion they just look and feel better

of course there is the discussion about how much harm plastic straws actually cause but if we all know that plastics aren’t great and if we have other options, why use them

Advices for new crew members?

i have a crew that’s fully composed of new guys this week and i’m looking for some helpful advice to give them that i haven’t given them already. they were quite capable today and all of them showed up with plenty of water, sober, with gloves and steel toes so in my book they’re basically professionals already.

they asked me for some advice and help while we were loading. so far i’ve told them

-don’t run off from your post
-hydrate
-don’t put your fingers in places where they could get pinched
-if anything is going wrong yell STOP, not wait or hold on
-hydrate
-i’ve shown them how to tip cases so that they won’t hurt themselves
-make as many friends and connections as they can
-hydrate

for festivals/longer gigs
-you never have enough socks/ shirts
-bring your own tp or wet wipes
-never let your own tools out of sight
-hydrate
-if you want to keep your clothes warm and dry for when you wake up put them in your sleeping bag
-HYDRATE

and lastly, if someone is being a dick just piss off and don’t get into fights. it’s not worth it

anything i may have forgotten?

Sock recommendations

So I am based in the EU and as all of us know good and dry socks are a necessity. Do you guys have any recommendations for sock that are both comfortable and also won’t hurt my wallet too much when they eventually wear out?

I’m quite fond of dirty rigger socks but they’re relatively hard to get and i’m not paying full price for those. Interestingly lidl has some decent socks in their parkside section and i have to admit that they are way better than what their price would suggest. They last for a while, don’t kill my feet and are cheap enough to just toss them if something happens.

Any recommendations or suggestions?

stageball

so we all know the moments when we have to be on standby and all we have to entertain ourselves is a bunch of used gaffer tape. what is your preferred sport to play with a gaffer ball? we recently found out that you can make a surprisingly decent volleyball ball out of it and right now it is what we play with it.

any other suggestions for what we can do with it apart from kicking it around?

can we collectively stop enabling companies that don’t hire proper staff and their bullshit behaviour?

last week i was managing a small crew for a gig. all regular stagehands with no other certifications or gear.

a guy asks if one of us could climb up a truss (around 5 meters up) to tie off a few ropes for a backdrop when none of the guys were certified for work in heights or had the necessary equipment so i told him absolutely not and yet he kept trying

the other day we were building a small stage for an event for a specific company and other people kept coming to ask if we could help them with their stands even though they were not paying us

they do this because it might work on some people. do the job that you were hired to do and nothing more. if someone else wants something from you make them pay for it, it’s not fair to you to do work for free and it’s not fair to your mates because then they’ll be expected to do the same

as long as people keep enabling this it will keep happening, don’t let them do that. it might feel bad to say no to someone asking for help but they should take it up with their management for not hiring enough people

Can we please stop with the bard discrimination?

i get the jokes, bards are hippies and will sleep with anything that breathes. very funny. that is a stereotype and the majority of bards do not act like that. we also work and study for our abilities and just because bard schools are kind of a joke doesn’t mean it’s a valid path.

once you learn the [snare bomb] and [halftime] abilities you can give your team the stankface and violent headbanging buffs increasing stamina and strength which are really useful if you use them well. if you want more healing make you bard learn how to cast [Stayin’ alive] and if you want more offensive capabilities you can use [circle pit] and [wall of death]

wizards keep yapping about their tomes and runes or whatever and conveniently seem to ignore the fact that bards have their own and spend an equal amount of time learning them and creating their own.

so please, let’s stop with the classism and join hands fighting a common enemy. the peasants who refuse to pay us for our services

never thought i’d actually properly yell at stagehands but it finally happened

i am a guitar tech but but i also work as a stagehand so i know how the job can be and i don’t really mind basic mistakes (mixing up stage left/right, where things go etc) and if there’s no rush im happy to help a bit

yesterday my band had a last minute gig so there was only one other tech with me and we had very tight timeframes to set up and break everything down. the crew we were provided was very inexperienced and almost managed to knock off my guitar rack off of the stage when they were pushing it along some other mistakes. not great but manageable and i didn’t really mind that.

when our set finished and we started packing up to make space for the other band problems began. only two out of the four guys actually showed up to the stage and mostly just stood around and watched despite being pretty clearly told what and how to do it.

five minutes later they also disappeared and after a moment i went looking for them as i needed help getting the cases off of the stage and into the van and i still had other things i needed to do

i found them standing in line at the bar, happily chatting away and that was the tipping point.

there are so many crews here that provide people with at least some basic amounts of training but apparently the organizers couldn’t be bothered. they also kept bugging us about still having our stuff by the loading dock while we were loading but didn’t care that we didn’t get the crew we were promised so we kindly told them to piss off.

long story short, if you’re a stagehand please wait till the end of your shift to go to the bar and if you’re organizer please find someone responsible to manage your crew

all the people complaining about younger people having a specific etiquette around and calling texting are simply wrong

i’ve seen a lot of people be confused about some text messages being interpreted more passive aggressive than other ones despite being almost the same (eg. “Thank you. vs “thanks”) in casual conversations. and a lot more people claiming that it’s stupid and people are just sensitive.

the same goes for calling. older people will call me whenever they choose but people around me usually ask first if we can call or to schedule a call if it’s not an emergency which in my opinion is just a lot more polite and easier for everyone. (of course if it’s an emergency or needs immediate attention it’s fine)

my argument is that people simply communicate differently through different media. you don’t write an email the same way you talk to a person and the same goes for all other forms. complaining about this is just silly

This thing is kind of neat. It’s not fast but it has enough kilowatts, handles surprisingly good, the gearbox is quite smooth and it has torque for days

i am not the most knowledgeable person about this show but one thing stuck to me. moscow kinda pressured professor into involving denver as he wanted to protect him. this would be quite detrimental to the plan and the professor has said previously that he can hide people until the heist is done

wouldn’t it make more sense to hide denver until the heist is done, giving moscow the motivation to finish it while not being bother by personal relationships and still fulfilling moscows wishes and protecting denver from danger

is there any logical reason why the professor wouldn’t do this rather than involving denver?
