Sometimes I like going to Google Maps and clicking random places just to see an interesting snippet of life in a faraway corner of the world

Most such photos, if you look at them closely, have more going on than may first appear.

Post if you got ‘em!

Are Pendleton blankets too hot for summer?

I have a wool comforter in a duvet and it’s just too hot, but my top sheet by itself leaves me too cold (I sleep with AC).

Is a wool Pendleton blanket and a top sheet too hot? I’ve never slept with one before so I don’t know if they’re winter-only blankets.

Opinions?

How much different was whale oil from whatever the next-best thing was?

It always strikes me that, unless I’m incorrect in my understanding, people went to sea for years on end to kill the biggest animals on earth and often die trying—all because this oil was… a bit brighter than the alternative??

Is this really all that was special about whale oil? What was the next-best thing? Are there any videos that show the difference in light output?

Is there a historical reason why so many of the UK’s major cities fall along this line, or is it largely coincidence?

Jazz: where to start

I’ve been a (non-professional) musician and jazz fan for 35-some-odd years, and I figured I’d drop this in this subreddit because I so often see people in other subreddits (and irl) asking how to get into jazz. It occurred to me that y’all would be fertile ground for this kind of post, even if it’s tangential to Phish.

Obviously, the jazz world is enormous, but I’ll make it easy for anyone who might be overwhelmed by the genre or who is otherwise interested but doesn’t quite know where to start.

[Oscar Peterson +One: Clark Terry](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NTWenY\_4-fg&list=PLqraBGyLE5Gop82tiCBnIFt6aCedfq\_Vg&ra=m): This is just easy and absolutely delightful. It swings so damn hard. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t love this when they heard it. Super accessible.

[John Coltrane Quartet: Africa/Brass](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=x5HdhiQN3U4&list=PLEyxWPyoryRID8d19oUcCGwYeRbAfht3U&index=8&ra=m): This is specifically for anyone who’s getting high and/or has the occasion to really get deep into something for 15 minutes. Pay attention, it’ll blow your mind. To me, it’s very closely related to the deep, hypnotic vibe that characterized ‘99 Phish. A profoundly rewarding listening experience for anyone in the right frame of mind.

Cheers!

Two weeks ago I subscribed to get seltzer delivered to me from Amazon. I just got an email saying the price was going up 31%.
