(Not hate!!) Katseye can be sexy, but they're being sexy in a way that markets to kids and it's...
Basically the title!! I saw the new music video for hootie frutti and some of the discussions that were going down about the video, how katseye should stop being sexy, how they should be sexy, wtv.
My take is that they need to pick a side with their branding, to be completely honest. Like this mv was obviously inspired by Slave4U, I think that's even been confirmed officially. And if we take out the exploitation that happens in the pop industry, there's nothing wrong with having a sexy concept.
But honestly comparing the two videos, are we being so fr guys?? Do we really think that katseye is not for the kids to get into??? The sexy vibe in Slave4U is like... not being intercut with childish fruit euphemisms or a product placement for slime. And idk what kind of brand deals Britney had when she was big, but it didn't touch her art in a way that has lasted to the modern day imo. And teens were still into her im sure so why are we targeting Gen alpha rn?? And slave4u is a much better song I'm sorry.
I think what makes people so uncomfortable with Katseye's transition in branding can honestly be attributed to this weird trichotomy between tiktok brain rot vibes that a child would enjoy, mediocre promo tracks, and the attempt to be sexy throughout. That and the blatant product placement, which makes it feel extremely manufactured in a cheap way. It makes you think more about cases of confirmed exploitation and it becomes harder to say "well they want to do it" when their label is slapping an obvious, noticable ad right in the middle of their mv.
It's unfortunately stunting their artistry, which is unfortunate because I do believe all of the members are talented. Idk maybe this is a cold take but it just keeps bugging me and I dont even follow katseye like that
