Apple changed the AppStore Again!

Today the requirements to add/change screenshots have changed. No notice, no guidance!

On the main distribution page, your old images and preview vids are all locked! You have to go the See All page to make mods.

Current Repo Xcode 27

Prior versions of Xcode let you know which local Got repo you were using. The active repo was listed in both the top “title” block of the project window, and annoyed as”active” in the Branches list under Repositories. Now, I can’t find a live annotation, I just have to infer which branch is active from canto-clicking the bracket to see if it says “current location”. This just requires extra steps. Anybody have a more efficient way?

Egypt Day in New York

For those in or near New York City, the Egypt Day street fair is coming up this Saturday 9/5/2026.

The NY Chapter of ARCE (American Research Center in Egypt) will be there showing some of the many conservation and educational projects it’s involved with in Egypt.

An improved phonetic speller

Hi All,

This is posted with the consent of one of the Mods here in r/EgyptianHieroglyphs. Please note that no AI Slop was used or harmed in the making of this App! Neither was any AI agent used in coding.

Nearly every day someone in this /sub or one of the other Egypt-related subs is requesting a “translation” of a piece of jewelry which is usually a name. Of course, the jewelry is actually a phonetic spelling of an English name or word, not an actual ancient Egyptian word.

There are also plenty of requests by folks who want to design a tat or artwork for a story.

There are a bunch of web sites and apps which can do simple conversions to glyphs. But none of them do it the way an Egyptian scribe would! These simple converters use what’s called the Egyptian alphabet which are just 20 or so single consonants. But Egyptians loved economy and efficiency. There are literally hundred of glyphs which represent two or three consonant sounds at a time and Egyptians loved to use them! Egyptians were also extremely fond of stacking glyphs together to save space, but the simple apps don’t do this.

Aviametrix just built an app which creates phonetic names the way we think an Egyptian would. Using the great databases created for the Aviametrix dictionaries, the app has about 700 hieroglyphs (biliterals and triliterals) for different spellings which all sound the same for a given name or word. You can then pick the version which most appeals to you and export it. Along the way, the app teaches you a little bit about the different glyphs.

The App is in the Apple AppStore and it’s called “Spell it in Hieroglyphs”. If there is enough interest, Aviametrix may try an Android version.

An App for Names (and other words too)

Hi All,

After checking in with one of the Mods here, I am posting this with permission:

The Real Narmer Palette at home

At the most influential location at the Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Square. Center of the main lobby, right at the entrance. Nobody puts this baby in the corner!

Someone here said this artifact was hard to find, covered up in a wood cabinet, and poorly lit! The truth is that the Narmer Palette is usually completely surrounded by visitors and it can be difficult to get close. We got this shot before the museum opened.

The palette is considered by many to be the start of human history (history being defined as a written record). The Narmer palette is a written story of the unification of Egypt and is the oldest known narrative in the world.

High Quality Publications

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has one of the largest collections of Egyptian Art in the World, outside Egypt. The Museum’s Egyptian Art department has been heavily involved in excavations and research for over 100 years, making many major contributions to our understand of ancient Egyptian culture.

Reddit is full of conspiracy nonsense and other unsupported drivel about Egypt. I thought I would share a link to the Met’s publications pages for Egypt where many books are available for free download. Enjoy!

New York’s Obelisk

Tooling around the back of the MET, here are some pix of the “Cleopatra’s Needle” from unusual vantage points. The obelisk is actually an artifact of Thutmosis III and originally from Heliopolis. The bronze crab shins at the base are modern replicas for the original Roman shims which are inside the museum.
