I built a TOTP authenticator that physically gates code access behind a watch bezel combination — closed beta, looking for security-minded testers

If you're in this sub you already know that "something you know" (password) plus "something you have" (TOTP code) is the baseline. RotarySafe adds a third factor that lives on your wrist.

The model: your TOTP secrets sit in an AES-256-GCM encrypted vault on your phone. To generate a code, you have to enter a rotary combination on your Wear OS watch — four steps, each a directional click count on the bezel, like a physical combination lock. Three wrong attempts and the vault hard-locks; clearing it requires biometric auth on the phone. The combination itself is hashed with PBKDF2 at 100k iterations and never stored in recoverable form. The app has no internet permission — it is physically incapable of phoning home.

The app is in closed testing and I want testers who will actually run it as their daily authenticator — edge cases only appear with real use.

Most TOTP apps have a quiet problem: open the app, codes are right there. Anyone nearby who sees your screen — or grabs your unlocked phone for a second — has your 2FA codes.

RotarySafe works differently. Your codes are in an encrypted vault on your phone. To open that vault, you have to enter a physical rotary combination on your Wear OS watch — like dialing a safe. Four steps, each a number of clicks left or right on the watch bezel. Get it wrong three times and it locks until you clear it from your phone with your fingerprint.

The codes never appear on screen until the combination is correct. And since it holds no internet permission, nothing ever leaves your devices.

It's in closed testing right now and I'm looking for people who care about 2FA security to use it daily and give honest feedback.

I've been building RotarySafe for a while and it's finally in a shape where I need real users rather than just me testing on my own watch.

The concept: your 2FA codes live in an encrypted vault that only opens when you dial a four-step rotary combination on your watch bezel. It mirrors a physical combination lock — each step is a number of clicks left or right, zero is not valid, three wrong attempts triggers a hard lock. The app holds no internet permission; everything is local.

Technical details for those who care:

  • Communication between phone and watch is AES-256-GCM encrypted at the app layer (on top of Bluetooth link encryption)
  • PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 at 100k iterations for the combination hash, Argon2id for backup encryption
  • The combination hash is computed on the watch before transmission — raw values never leave the device
  • Full TOTP per RFC 6238, Google Authenticator import supported

I'm specifically looking for people who will actually use it as their main authenticator, not just install it and forget it. Bugs that only appear in daily use are the interesting ones.
