What got to his back fins?

I’m worried it could be the filter? Do filters cause this kind of tearing? I haven’t added anything new but there has been some stringy algae in the tank. Photo 1 is “before”, photo 2 is “after”

Edit 1: More info on water parameters. Everything is ideal (ammonia is 0, nitrite is 0, etc.) except for pH. My pH is at 8.2.

I have been dealing with an algae bloom likely causing the high pH. I’ll do a deep clean of the tank to remove the algae and leave the tank light off for a week.

But would the high pH be causing the issue with his fins?

I’m going to watch his behavior for a bit and make sure he isn’t nipping at himself.

Edit 2: After observing his behavior for 15 minutes I did not notice any self-nipping. He is behaving normally except for 1 thing. He’s only staying in like one area of his tank and not swimming throughout all of it like usual.

Same question but re-formatted (apologies about the first one.) To those who can answer, do you regret having or not having kids / a kid?

Here’s a form with the results button- so sorry about the first one, it was my first time making a post like this.

My wild bettas (Betta antuta) have spawned. Help me please :)

Hi guys! My male antuta is about 3.5" and my female is 2.75". They have spawned. The male has a mouthful of eggs. Currently they are housed together, trouble free, as they have always been trouble free. Never any aggression. The male has been holding for about 3 days now.

Do I remove the female? Should I put her in her own cycled tank or should she go in a community tank with just bushynose plecos and guppies? Or should I remove the male? Any tips of any kind on antutas and breeding them would be appreciated.

What do I feed the fry? I've never hatched brine shrimp I've always fed livebearer and cichlid fry Hikari first bites or similar powdered fry food. Is that ok for baby antutas?

Please help :)

Are bettas heavy sleepers? (Genuine question)

I got my betta on a light cycle and I don’t want to disrupt his sleep. However I cannot sleep so I wanna get up and play some games, but I don’t want to wake him. Are bettas heavy sleepers or should I stay doom scrolling on my phone?

Honestly it’s such a long story…

But very long story short: I got a job in November as a lab animal husbandry technician. Meaning I worked with research animals- but not the research aspect. My job was caring for the animals, making sure they had food, water, clean bedding, health checks, etc.

Another long story short: Some mice I thought I was going to be able to adopt and take home I couldn’t. I put in my two week notice at the job just hoping to God the 4 of them would be okay for two more weeks… 2 of them have since been euthanized. Not for health purposes, not for research purposes… because the lab researcher has a full room, and instead of spending more money to get a larger room they just occasionally send someone in to pick random cages to euthanize.

The other 2 will be dead by the end of the month if not sooner. The study ends 5/30/26… once it ends there’s no need for the mice and they’re all euthanized.

I am so grief stricken.

I’m angry.

I’m helpless.

There is absolutely nothing I could have done to prevent the two deaths and there is nothing I can do to stop the other two.

Tomorrow is my last day. I plan to at least say goodbye to the two mice I thought I could adopt. But I’m not good with grief.

Any and all advice is welcome.

Thank you.
