So THIS is why we have such a high attrition rate

2k1 fails 38% of students
Assumptions: normal, if skewed, distribution, Equal weighting between exams (with final counting as 2 midterms), 90% attendance & homework score, no extra credit (though that is just a 1% bump)
To pass the class you need a 61 for C-.
Homework & attendance is 30%, so 0.3(90) + 0.7x = 61, so x = 48.57, which is the mean exam score needed to pass.
Standard deviations across all exams were 20 (well, 40 for the final, but that’s just 2 midterms), so sigma = sqrt (2400/16) = 12.25
Calculating z score: (48.57 (minimum weighted exam score to pass) - 52.25 (students’ mean weighted exam score)) / 12.25 (sigma) = -0.3
A z score of -0.3 is like 38%, so 38% of the class failed.
This is crazy. Why does Purdue do this shit to us
