Monday Mentions

Hello and welcome back to another question post!

What book on Loreum are you reading and why did you choose it?

My current read is Ever After High: Another Tale

By BluejaySkie

The reason I chose it is because it looks like the author draws their own art for their story and I think it's really cute!

Choose your character

Okay, so, this is kinda just a mini ramble 😂😂😂

But I recently started a "choose your own path" fantasy-thriller.

It's about Greek demigods who have been imprisoned by the Aztecs, and who must fight in the arena to keep the sun from dying.

The reader will have 6 characters to choose from eventually...

And I NEED to show you their pictures 😭😭😭

Seriously, they're a vibe.

Let me know which one you like most!

Who is your favourite character and what makes them special to you?

What character in your own Loreum book/ a book that you read on Loreum stuck with you and why?

I've currently started writing a story where I have more than one main character... And I already have a favourite 😂😂

Writer's burnout

I think it's something all of us feel occasionally. I'd like to share a couple tips I gained from experience, as someone who's been writing for a long time. Maybe some of you can find it useful? Feel free to add your ideas and experiences to this post.

1) Identify the source. It's not the same to feel burnout due to the writing process itself than from lack of motivation or external factors. Identifying the cause helps you finding a relief or solution.

1.1) External factors: a bad comment, lack of feedback, lack of support, physical discomfort, personal distress, constant distractions, life's shit happening... And many others. If you wonder why you are feeling that tired and demotivated when you sit down to write, or your body plainly refuses to do so... Do some thinking and check what's going on with your life, how it's making you feel right now. Can you accept it? Can you change it? Can you avoid it? Or just wait until it's over...?

1.2) Internal factors: writing for very long periods of time, getting stuck at a specific part because we're unsure if that's how we want it to go, perfectionism, too high expectations, social media related stress, self-induced pressure regarding deadlines or posting regularly... All related to how your own writing makes you feel. When you're dealing with these, I can assure you some self-love and acknowledgement help a lot. Writing can be as tough a job as any, but since we do it with passion and many feelings involved, we forget it can take its toll on us too.

2) Cut down Social Media. Whatever the cause, shutting down all social media for 24 hours or more always helps. We aren't always aware of how much energy and time it consumes, and when that energy is returned to us, inspiration often comes along after a proper rest.

3) Do some other type of creative activity. Instead of pushing yourself to write more, try something else you enjoy doing. Cooking pastries, drawing, gardening, playing an instrument, building a cat house made of toilet paper... Whatever suits you. Your brain will be reminded that creativity is fun and a way of resting too, and that helps with burnout and with writer's block.

4) Rest. Active resting or passive resting, it's up to you and your needs. But if you're feeling burned out... 99% of the times, you do need some rest. And possibly a small adjustment to your routine, so you can prevent (sometimes) future cases.

That's all I can think for now. I hope you find it helpful. Let's give each other some support ❤️

~Hugs~

I'm an author who wants to write a Dark Fantasy novel based on Egyptian Mythology. How can I do it in a respectful way?

Hi all, if this post doesn't fit the community then I'll happily take it down...

I just have a few questions and thought you guys would have the best insight on this...

I'm currently researching and planning a mythological fantasy novel based on Egyptian gods.

(loosely inspired by the Percy Jackson series)

In my book Egyptian Demigods exist (kids of gods x humans) and they have to balance their complicated souls with Ma'at (cosmic Truth and Order).

I know Egyptian mythology is very different from the myths about the greek gods and their affairs with humans, so I've been thinking about how I could create Egyptian Demigods in a respectful way that doesn't undermine the rich history and mythology of Egypt?

Any tips/advice or am I overthinking?

TLDR: just geeking out about my character.

Ammon El Masri is a secondary character in my Dark Fantasy story, The Weeping Jackal.

But he totally leaves an impression with his silver-white eyes and shy personality.

He was once an average Egyptian demigod... until his psychic powers of suggestion manifested at 14 and caused him to lose his life at 15.

Now, he's stuck in limbo with other demigods who, like him, had the potential to 'kill gods' if they'd lived longer in the mortal realm.

Due to his soft-spoken nature, Ammon has gained a reputation as 'the silent prince' whom inherited Ra's darkest powers. (I.e. The power to command others against their will).

I'm currently writing the chapter where Ammon gets properly introduced to the main story and ngl, I'm pretty hyped.

Here's 3 fun facts about him.

  1. He likes to wear leather jewelry. (He has a charmed anklet with faience beads which subdues his morally questionable powers... Yes, it was his idea.)

  2. He might look like he's 16 because he's stuck in the afterlife, but he was 15 when the Cairo Fire (Black Saturday) happened in 1952. (My boi is old 😆)

  3. He's actually blind and that's why he has pale eyes. (What happened is that when Ammon entered limbo, his father granted him 'sight' during the daylight hours. (Because Ra is the sun god). The catch though, is that the moment the sun sets, Ammon becomes blind again.)

Anyway, thanks for reading. Here's a cookie 🍪.
