Ridgeway Model 9877 (4/99) – Inherited clock, middle weight overwound, time train stuck, winder frozen
Hey everyone, I recently inherited this Ridgeway grandfather clock (Model 9877, Movement CDII/J7, set up in 4/99) from my mom.
The clock is sitting perfectly level, and the chime trains are running and sounding completely fine when you advance the the time. However, the time refuses to advance when the pendulum swings, and eventually stops.
I noticed middle winder arbor is completely frozen up - someone wound it up all the way up. To the top - farther up than the chime weights.
I climbed up and removed the left side cover (if standing facing the clock) I can see that the middle brass cable has overlapped on the middle drum and seems to be wedged tightly against the framework or adjacent parts. Which I guess why it’s not keeping time.
I’m pretty handy with non clock things, but I’m also being careful is this clock means a lot to me.
Has anyone dealt with a jammed, overlapping cable like this on a Kieninger-style movement (I think that’s what this is from research). What is the safest way to un-wedge and realign the cable when it's locked up this tight?
Any advice would be hugely appreciated
Tom
