First Watchdives WD007

Just received it yesterday and am impressed. Got it with the titanium bracelet and it’s very nice. Adjusting size was relatively easy compared to other bracelets I’ve done.

Comfortable, looks great, runs great (so far). As I said in another post, I scratched a $7k itch with a $200 watch. I know it’s been said before but I’m really impressed with the value here. You get a lot for your money. Also came with a navy rubber strap which I’ll try at some point but really enjoying the bracelet for now.

Also a fan of the simple logo without a lot of busy lettering on the dial.

Also had good experience with CS as we had a short exchange via email. Shipping was relatively quick too.

Overall a good experience and beautiful watch.

Gold AV86 1954 Amalfi

Just put on the gold bracelet that came with my AV 86 Amalfi for the first time… I know it’s a bit much, but I love it.

How do you justify/manage a large(er) collection?

I’ve only got a few watches. I feel like I get the opportunity to wear them all frequently enough. I’m thinking about getting another watch or two but I find myself hesitant because I really LIKE my watches and enjoy wearing them…and worry I will have decision paralysis if I have like 5 or 6 watches to choose from. Or that I will have a “favorite” and shun the others. I don’t really want to collect for the sake of collecting, I like to wear my watches.

So those with bigger collections. How to do you manage them? Do you rotate etc?

My simple nascent collection

After wearing an Apple Watch for a decade, I recently started getting an itch for a “dumb” analog watch. I haven’t worn them since cell phones became ubiquitous around the turn of the century.

I have a simple 2 watch collection that I’m pretty content with for now. I feel like this covers all bases and will let me feel out this new hobby. I’m planning to stop here for a while to make sure the interest sticks and I don’t phase out and go back to my Apple Watch before putting more money into it. The one other watch I may pick up is a solar g shock type watch as my doomsday SHTF watch. I also still use my AW for workouts and such.

Vaer DS2 quartz diver as my daily and AV86 1954 Amalfi mechanical as my dressier option. Not shown but I also have a black rubber strap for the diver and a gold bracelet for the Amalfi so can switch up the looks. I love the green silicone currently on it, feel like it dresses it down so I can wear it more casually too. The watches aren’t crazy high end but I really love them both.

I wear a gold ring and chain so am into gold accents for the watches.

[New Watch] AV86 1954 Amalfi

Got a new watch a couple days ago. AV86 1954 Amalfi in gold/cream. Really like it so far. 36mm so not too dainty for a dress watch. It came on a brown alligator leather band which is nice, but I love it on this green silicone I added to my purchase. Also got the gold bracelet but I’m gonna save that for when I really dress up or special occasions. I feel the green silicone dresses it down a bit so I can wear it more casually.

I was debating between this and a Hamilton Boulton but felt this was the better value and also more unique.

Overall very pleased with first impressions!

[Vaer DS2] First New Watch in 30 years

I picked up my first new watch (that wasn’t an Apple Watch) in probably 30 years a few days ago.

I was born in the 80s and was into watches as a kid and wore them up through high school. Once cell phones became ubiquitous and I got my first Nokia I basically stopped wearing watches until my first Apple Watch. I’ve now been wearing the AW daily for the past decade, and have finally started to come back round full circle to traditional watches. I’ve been thinking of getting one for months and finally got one.

I was considering getting something higher tier like Omega but figured I’d better start small just in case it’s a phase and I wind up going back to my AW. Right now the plan is to basically just use the AW to track my workouts.

Anyway - I love my new watch. It’s a Vaer 39mm quartz diver. I love that it’s a micro brand and local to me (SoCal). Idk why but it appeals to me more than other big companies in the same price bracket (like Seiko, Casio etc). Feels a little unique and less commonplace.

Vaer says they used Omega and Rolex military divers as inspiration and I see it. Rolex in the dial and Omega in the case. While still having its own flair. This is probably why I love Vaer’s aesthetic so much more than other dive watches I was looking at.

*Bracelet is 3rd party not from Vaer. I wanted a two tone to go better with my gold necklace and wedding ring. It’s cheap but does the trick. I’m sure Vaer’s official ss bracelet is much nicer.

Vaer - New Watch

Visited their showroom a couple days ago and picked up this DS2 Diver Gilt 39mm quartz.
Very impressed so far, great heft and feel, beautiful, well priced.

I picked up a 3rd party two tone to complement the gilt and match my gold wedding ring.

New watch! DS2 Gilt 39mm

Finally had an opportunity to stop into the store in Venice Beach. Didn’t have a lot of time because I had to go pick up my kid at preschool, but the sales person was super kind and helpful. Was originally planning to pick up a navy or black diver, but after I saw this in the store, I had to get it. Was listed as out of stock online, so I jumped on it.

Only been a minute, but first impressions are very good, beautiful watch.

NGD - Martin 000cjre Streetmaster

Made a post recently about exchanging a recently purchased GS Mini for a Martin 000jr. Well I did it earlier today and am very content.

I do a lot of finger style playing and after comparing them in the store, and playing more at home, the wider nut and slightly longer neck of the Martin is really better suited for it. My notes ring out loud and clear. The all wood body, electronics, all upgrades. It cost a bit more but def feels like it was worth it.

The GS Mini is a great guitar, but for my personal tastes and playing, this is the couch guitar for me.

Also went out of my way to grab a Streetmaster finish. I already have a dreadnought spruce top so wanted something a little different. Love it.

Last note: while I wound up preferring the 000jr over the GS Mini, the included gig bag from Taylor was much nicer than the Martin.

Martin 000cjre - Streetmaster or not?

I’m planning on exchanging my recently purchased Taylor GS Mini for a Martin 000c jr e. I like the mini but after playing a bit decided I’d prefer the wider nut, all wood build, and cutaway of the 000cjre.

Only thing I’m torn on is whether to get the standard spruce finish or the streetmaster. I have a full size spruce dreadnought Martin so like the idea of getting something a little different for my small guitar.

Just not sure if the finish is nice in person and how the sound varies, if at all? The closest guitar center that had the streetmaster in stock is like 2 hours away, hence this post. Thanks!

Repair?

Check out pics of my 17 year old Martin D16RGT. Binding is loose, neck slightly detaching from body.

Anyone have a ballpark estimate what a neck reset and binding repair will run me? Trying to decide whether to repair or sell cheap and get a new guitar. It was a gift from an ex girlfriend who I’m no longer in touch with so don’t think I can use the warranty.

Also - how do you think this model compares with current alternatives like the D16 or “Special 16” available at Guitar Center? I know they don’t make the D16RGT anymore so may be worth to repair and keep just because it’s no longer in production.

It’s a beautiful guitar, all wood, made in USA. Just don’t know at what price it stops making sense to repair.

Thanks!

Is repair worth it? Martin D16RGT

I have a Martin D16RGT that’s about 17 years old. It’s a beautiful guitar that has seen better days. The binding has come undone around the body and the neck has partially separated from the body. Between neck reset, binding repair, and a setup I’m looking at close to $1k.

Martin doesn’t make this model anymore but I’ve seen it being resold for $1300-$2200. It’s all wood, made in USA.

Torn whether to repair vs sell for cheap and get a new one. Closest modern equivalent seems to be a D16 which are around $2k.

It was a (very nice) gift from an ex girlfriend who I am not in touch with anymore so unsure if I could use a warranty.

Taylor 112ce vs Martin 000c jr e

I made a post yesterday asking about price:quality and got some great responses. After a bunch of research, I’m between these two guitars. I have only played the Martin but can’t find the Taylor to test out. Can be ordered online though.

Opinions on these 2? I know the Martin is all wood which is considered superior, but honestly I’m not sure if I want it or not as it’s richer but higher maintenance to keep healthy.

I play a combination of strumming, fingerpicking etc and mostly do blues/rock/folk type stuff. I have owned a Martin before but never a Taylor.

Thoughts??

Guitar price:quality?

I am a longtime player (35 years) who never really got into the technical/gear side and just enjoys playing. I’ve gone through a bunch of guitars over the years, but none have been “high end.” My “nicest” guitars have been a low level Martin (like $800 in 2009) and a low level Gibson (around $900 in 2010). All my other guitars have been “cheapies” like Ibanez, Epiphone etc.

Anywho - I am looking to pick up a new acoustic, mainly just to play with my kids and have around the house. When I was younger, I actually worked part time as a guitarist/composer and made money from it. Now, it is purely a hobby, but I still play every day. Before kids I would record and jam with friends, and hopefully when they’re a little older I’ll have some of my time back to record more.

Anywho (again) - I am torn on what to pick up. My Martin has come undone where the neck connects to the body, and my other current cheapie, a Washburn, is damaged in 2 different places…this new guitar would essentially be my only “good” guitar and hence would get played a lot.

I’m leaning toward a Taylor GS mini as I’ve never had a Taylor and I like the 3/4 size for toting around to the park, beach, road trips etc. But I’m also eyeing some other options, like the Taylor 214ce, or another Martin…

The thing is my budget is pretty open. I have the dough to spend $2-3k on a higher end guitar, I’m just not sure I need or want one…and I could use the money for other things (like my kids haha).

I went into Guitar Center earlier today and played like 10 guitars ranging from $500 to $3500 and honestly? Couldn’t hear or feel that big of a difference to justify the premium.

So bottom line question: for a casual player who is serious about playing but does it as a hobby, and has young kids lol, is there any benefit to getting a higher end instrument? My gut says no but I also probably won’t buy another guitar for awhile (my last purchase was 7 years ago) and I’d like to get a good quality instrument I will enjoy playing for years.

Super long train of thought post, sorry and thanks!

Serengeti at TJ Maxx

I’ve been on the hunt for a new premium pair of sunglasses after I recently lost my Moscot Lemtoshes. I loved the Lemtosh but had them for 6 years and want to try something different.

I narrowed it down to a few options, one of which I spotted at TJ Maxx for a steep discount. The Danby in Honey with gradient lenses are listed on sale for $228 on Serengeti’s site but $130 on TJ Maxx. As far as I can tell it seems to be the same model.

I took a chance and ordered them. Anyone have experience with this model or buying premium from discount stores like TJ Maxx?
