Biome Idea: Rocky Coastline

Living in the PNW, I've had a chance to explore local ecology in our vivid coastlines which feature hoards of driftwood, tide pool critters, and unique rock formations. I think it would be fun to bring some of those to a new Minecraft biome. Further description is in Slide 3.

*Other things I did not mention:

  • Driftwood would not yield a full wood set, in keeping with its real-world dryness and fragility, but it can be used as fuel in furnaces.
  • Wet sand of all variants and wet driftwood can be dried in furnaces, just like wet sponges.
  • Potential new mobs could include: starfish, orca whales, and crabs.
  • As an homage to 'The Goonies' (which was set in Astoria, Oregon), intact shipwrecks can sometimes generate within aquifer-caves in this biome, entered via coves.

What college major is best for working in props/sets/costumes?

I’m currently studying Industrial Design, but might not be able to pull through due to a math-related disability. What about a Design BFA? Or do I need to get some specialized degree from some big name recognizable California art school? Or what about Interdisciplinary Studies? Trying to decide a Plan B.

I’ve heard that portfolios and skills are more important than degrees, is this true from a hiring standpoint? Could I break into the industry with an Associates’ Degree?

Where to buy balsa/basswood for crafts?

Recently traveled to Hobby Lobby, which was to my knowledge the only place that sold balsa wood and basswood (I think the brand is Midwest Products), only to find the cabinet empty-- listed for sale at $50 and the balsa itself was set in clearance seemingly never to return. (This was a few weeks ago, they're probably empty now.)

Joann's was my other stop. RIP.

Michael's doesn't sell any,

and contrary to the name HobbyTown only sells kits and not materials for scratch-built.

Is this another situation where I have to regretfully use Amazon? (I realize the irony since balsa wood literally comes from the Amazonian rainforests in Ecuador, unless maybe the craft variety is farmed, I'm unsure.)

How do I edit faces?? There's no way to click on anything here just grab object, move, rotate. There's not creative options

No way to extrude?

I know this isn't Blender, but for the love of herobrine why is the only way to shape an object or manipulate *parts* of an object/block/item be to:

  1. add cube

  2. move cube

  3. change cube shape

  4. add cube

  5. move cube

  6. change cube shape

*rinse/repeat*

It has to be the slowest possible method of doing anything. Good lord. Help me out if there's a better way to do this.

Dappled Forest grass color should be mixed-hue

Bad editing skills, I know. But I feel like the big ambient issue with the dappled/poplar forest biome so far isn't necessarily a lack of mobs, particle effects, or plants, but the monotonous and overwhelming red-orange color. It's just too similar to any of the leaf colors and lacks natural contrast that is found in real forests during autumn.

IIL alt rock such as Ween, Beck, Blind Melon, Jane's Addiction, Soundgarden..

Been shifting away from indie folk lately into stuff with more energy and loudness, unconventional riffs that are brown or even sour; actually the browner and the more sour/bitter/astringent the better. Stuff with a "born to die, world is a fuck" attitude, but competently put together.

Cushions in stairs make for nice road stripes

A very time consuming process and eventually lag-inducing if done at a large scale (such as for an entire city,) but lots of options for making gradual turns, curves in roadways, as well as markings like zebra crossings/crosswalks, speed bumps, do-not-cross, et cetera. Would like to see what others make with these techniques.
