A Friendly Reminder About Cultural Diversity in Sri Lanka

https://preview.redd.it/x6s4a2p86lhh1.png?width=2592&format=png&auto=webp&s=7e576ed7ca34275bad6ca473ac239e64398e4d55

As more Chinese people come to Sri Lanka for work, business, or tourism, our country is becoming more diverse. Personally, I don't have a problem with that. I think it's a good opportunity for us to experience a new culture and learn from each other.

At the same time, I also understand that every community can have both positive and negative experiences. We've seen in many countries that when a few individuals do something wrong, people sometimes unfairly judge an entire group. That's something we should avoid.

Recently, I've noticed more posts and comments on Facebook and some IG that seem to target Chinese people in general. I even came across a group that promotes anti Chinese views. Whether the information shared is true or not, it's important not to believe everything we see on social media without checking the facts.

As Sri Lanka becomes more diverse, there may be challenges, but there are also opportunities to learn about different cultures, foods, traditions, and ideas. We can welcome that while still protecting and valuing our own cultures and religions, whether they are Buddhist, Hindu, Islam, Christianity, or any other.

Let's respect our own culture, respect other people's cultures, and judge individuals by their actions rather than making assumptions about an entire community. A little understanding and critical thinking can go a long way.

That's all I wanted to say. Dhank u

Is Sri Lanka Falling Behind in UX/Product Design? Why Are There No Design Focused Degrees Bach or Mast?

https://preview.redd.it/qilq76llajgh1.png?width=1306&format=png&auto=webp&s=d780dc4a9cc9903fa10d268b298986d732a0c9f0

I’ve seen design-related programs at AMDT and AOD, but I’m yet to find a something from a larger university, especially at the master’s level for design. I was considering SE during COVID, but I switched to product design because I genuinely enjoy what I do.

The problem is that Sri Lanka seems to have very limited or none options for design education. There are many designers here, but there isn’t even a single masters program focused on areas like HCI, interaction design, or UX. At the same time, the pay for UX/product designers is still quite low, so many of us have to take small freelance projects to earn extra income.

I also feel that if I stay here for another 3 - 4 years, I might fall behind compared to designers in Western countries, China, or even India, where the UX/product design industry is growing much faster.

For UX designers and product designers, do you think we are falling behind in this field? Or is the industry still developing, with opportunities to grow?

My eyes have been blessed! What a movie! 🤯🤯

My 1st ever IMAX experience! It was supposed to be Interstellar, but I didn't get the ticket, and and waited for a long time. So, I’m can start my IMAX with Nolan’s The Odyssey instead. And The whole black sand scene, my god 🤯🤯🤯

Should I complain to Arpico about an employee posting about Black July?

I came across an X/Twitter account u/billybullball that claims to be a "Manager at Arpico Hyde Park". The bio says the same, and there are posts inviting people to meet at the branch to fight.

In the replies, this account seems to engage with a post about Black July (the 1983 riots for new peeps who doesn't know) with something like "maybe just one more time" which feels very inappropriate and provocative given how sensitive this topic is for Sri Lankans.

I've attached screenshots to check, or reach any arpico employee if you see this!

I'm thinking of sending a polite complaint email to Arpico asking them to verify if this is a real employee and to address it if so. As a customer, I don't want a major Sri Lankan company associated with this kind of content.

What do you think? Is it worth complaining, or am I overreacting? Has anyone else seen this account?

Is Janhvi Kapoor part of Dhruv Vikram's upcoming 4th film?

Saw an X post; it's not a sports drama. An action thriller? Is that true?

Got yelled at for defending a guy who was falsely accused on a bus. 😭

So hear me out 😭

I was on a bus otw to the dentist. I was sitting next to a guy who was just minding his own business. He had a huge travel bag and looked like he was heading to Pettah.

The bag was pretty heavy, so he had it resting on his lap while keeping both his hands on the grab handle in front of him.

The problem was that every time the bus moved, the bag kept bumping into the woman standing on his left.

She immediately assumed he was intentionally touching her. But the whole time, I could clearly see that both of his hands were on the handle nowhere near her.

She started accusing him, so I stepped in and said, "It wasn't him. It was just the bag. I saw where his hands were." Even she can see cuz she was standing

Instead of listening, her friend turned on me and started shouting, "People like you are why women aren't safe! You're supporting men for this kind of behavior! You'll end up in the news soon."

At that point I got frustrated and said, "Don't behave like a stupid aunty!"

Yeah... that only made things worse. 😂 All her other friends(4) joined in and started yelling at me too.

I was pissed, so I said, "Ehnm, let's go to the police. I'll even file a case against you and your friends for falsely accusing someone and causing a scene for people who are just trying to get to work. I'm a lawyer (I'm not) if you try to put a case on him, I'll defend him for free."

The funniest part? I completely forgot half my Sinhala cuz I'm Tamil, so I ended up speaking in full on Singlish. 🤣🤣 No cussing though. 🙏🏽

Eventually, they all got off the bus. They all made intense eye contact with me while leaving like that before you make out 😂 with someone. Right before he got off, he looked at me and gave me the biggest smile. didn't say a word

Ngl, that smile made the whole argument worth it. The whole bus crowd was looking me, I did not gve a fck.

Just to be clear: Women absolutely should speak up if they genuinely feel unsafe. But falsely accusing someone without checking what actually happened isn't okay either. In this case, I literally watched the whole thing happen, and it was the bag, not the guy.

I used ChatGPT cuz my storytelling skills are 0.
