And now I would like to advocate for "epenethesis" and "sync'pe"

My question basically is how do you choose between the two word orders? Are there cases where only one word order is correct? Because before I was under the impression that it was only in (past participle + hebben/zijn) where the green word order was possible so:

"Hij weet dat ik piano gespeeld heb" or "...heb gespeeld"

But not

"Hij weet dat ik piano spelen kan"

But the more I read about this the more it seems like it might maybe be more complicated. Is this a matter of dialect variation? Or formality? Should I stick to red word order to be safe or would that sound unnatural? Do the two even have a significant difference?
