Hello everyone, I have had some recent success with 3d printing and using a command line interface to set up my printer, find files, slice them , and print. All without sight! 3D Printing and Braille Tactile Maps: A Guide for Screen Reader Users
A guide for working alongside an AI coding assistant, such as Claude Code, to print in 3D and create tactile maps without needing sight to operate the software involved. See "Setting Up a Command-Line Assistant" at the end of this document if you don't already have one set up.
What This Guide Covers This guide explains how to get a 3D printer working completely through typed commands, so you never have to touch the printer's own touchscreen or a hard-to-navigate visual program for everyday printing. It also explains how to turn a flat map file into a physical, touchable 3D print with raised streets, raised buildings, and real Braille labels for street names.
None of this requires you to know how to code. Your role is to describe what you want and make a few decisions along the way. An AI coding assistant, sometimes called a command-line assistant or a coding service, does the technical work for you.
What You Will Need • A 3D printer that can connect to your home Wi-Fi, or one you can otherwise connect to your computer. • Your printer's official software installed on your computer, sometimes called a "slicer," and signed in if it uses an account. • Access to an AI coding assistant that can run commands for you, such as Claude Code. See "Setting Up a Command-Line Assistant" at the end of this document for help getting one running. • A sighted helper for one short, one-time task at the printer's own screen, if your printer has a built-in touchscreen. Those screens typically don't work with a screen reader, but this is only needed once. Part 1: One-Time Setup This part connects your computer to the printer so you can print by typing a command instead of using the touchscreen or a visual program. You will only need to do this once.
Step 1: Turn on your printer's direct-connection option Many 3D printers have a network or Wi-Fi setting that allows a direct connection from a computer, separate from any app or cloud account. The exact name and location of this setting varies by printer brand and model, so look for wording like "network," "LAN," or "direct connect" in the printer's settings, or check the printer's manual. Ask your sighted helper to find this option and turn it on. Turning it on often makes the printer show a short code made of a few letters and numbers. Have your helper read that code out to you, and write it down or save it as a voice memo.
Your helper can usually also find the printer's current network address on the same screen, often under an "i" for information icon. Save that too.
Step 2: Tell your assistant the details Give your AI assistant the short code and the network address from Step 1. Also tell it which filament colors you currently have loaded in the printer, and in which slots if your printer has more than one. Your assistant will use this to confirm it can talk to the printer directly, without needing the touchscreen or a visual program again.
Step 3: Ask for a simple print command Ask your assistant to set up a simple, easy-to-remember command for printing. Once this is done, printing anything in the future is as easy as saying something like: "Print this file in black."
Step 4: Do a small test print Before printing anything important, ask your assistant to send a small, throwaway test shape to the printer, without starting the actual print. This confirms everything is connected properly before you commit any filament or time to a real project.
Part 2: Everyday Printing Once the one-time setup is done, printing day-to-day is simple. Give your assistant the file you want printed and tell it which color to use. It will prepare the file and send it to the printer for you. Always ask your assistant to tell you what it's about to do and to wait for your go-ahead before it actually starts printing, since prints use real time and material.
Where to Find Files to Print You don't have to design your own models to 3D print. Plenty of websites host free, ready-to-print files that other people have made and shared. Ask your assistant to search one of these for you, describe what it finds, and download whichever file you choose.

A search engine that searches across Thingiverse, Printables, Cults3D, MyMiniFactory, and more all at once, so you can look in one place instead of checking several separate sites. A good one to start with for this reason alone.
A note on all five sites above: none of them were built specifically with screen readers in mind, and how easy each one is to navigate can vary. Don't hesitate to ask your assistant to help you search, read out descriptions, or work around an awkward part of a page.

NASA's own free library of 3D models from its missions, including hundreds of ready-to-print files of spacecraft, rockets, and other space hardware. Since it's published by NASA itself, the models are accurate and well documented.
APH Tactile Graphic Image Library (TGIL) https://www.aph.org/tgil/
A free library from the American Printing House for the Blind, built specifically for tactile use. It includes both flat tactile graphics and STL files ready for 3D printing. A free account is required to download.
BTactile https://btactile.com/
A search tool covering thousands of tactile graphics gathered from sources around the world, created for touch readers. Most of what it indexes is meant for flat tactile printing rather than 3D printing, but it's a useful place to check alongside the sites above.
Part 3: Making a Tactile Map with Braille If you have a map file you'd like turned into a touchable, raised 3D map with Braille street names, here is what to expect.
Step 1: Share the file and your address Give your assistant the map file and your full home address. The address lets your assistant look up the real street names and match them to the correct streets in the file.
Step 2: Ask for a check of the raised features Ask your assistant to check the file for you before printing. In particular, ask whether streets and buildings are raised enough to feel clearly, and whether the file already includes any Braille. Your assistant can measure this directly from the file and explain what it finds in plain terms.
Step 3: Decide how street names should be added Real street names often don't fit neatly next to busy, crowded streets on a small printed map. If your assistant runs into this, it should explain the trade-off and ask you to choose, for example between: making the Braille slightly smaller than the standard size so it fits, trimming a small amount off nearby buildings to make room for full-size, standard Braille, or placing the label a little further from the street in the nearest open space instead. There is no wrong answer here, it's a personal preference, so don't hesitate to ask questions if you're unsure.
Step 4: Review before printing Ask your assistant to describe the finished design to you and to hold off on starting the actual print until you say so. This gives you a chance to change anything, such as the color or the placement of a label, before any filament is used.
What to Do If a Print Goes Wrong Every 3D printer occasionally produces a failed or messy print. This is a normal part of the process, not a sign you've done something wrong, and most problems are easy to fix once you know what happened.
Ask Your Assistant to Check What Happened If a print seems to have stalled, stopped early, or come out wrong, start by asking your assistant to check the printer's current status. Many printers report a specific error, such as a temperature problem or filament running out, and your assistant can look this up for you and explain it in plain language.
Checking a Print by Touch Touch is often the most direct way to figure out what went wrong with a print. Once the printer has stopped moving and any hot parts have had time to cool, you can feel over the finished portion of a print for clues: a spot where it stopped building any higher than the rest, a rough or tangled patch where the material didn't lay down cleanly, or a piece that's come loose from the base plate. Always let a print finish, pause, or fully cool before reaching in, and follow your specific printer's own safety guidance about which parts can get hot. The first resource listed at the end of this section goes into this in much more detail and is worth reading before your first print, not just after something goes wrong.
Common Causes Most print problems trace back to just a few causes: the first layer not sticking to the plate, the printer's temperature settings being slightly off, or the print running out of filament partway through. Describe what you're noticing to your assistant, and it can help narrow down which of these is likely and adjust the settings before you try again.
When in Doubt, Ask and Try Again It's always fine to ask your assistant to explain what likely went wrong in simple terms, and then simply try the print again. Most fixes are small setting adjustments your assistant can make on your behalf, and a second attempt often succeeds without any further changes at all.

Helpful Tips • Keep your sighted helper's contact info handy. Touchscreen-only tasks are rare and mostly happen just once. • If the printer ever seems to disappear from the network, it may have been given a new address. Ask your helper to check the same information screen again, and pass the new address to your assistant. • Ask your assistant to remember your printer's details for next time, so you don't have to repeat this setup in future conversations. • It's always fine to ask your assistant to explain something again in simpler terms, or to describe a file or design out loud before deciding what to do next. Quick Phrases You Can Use Here are some simple things you can say to your assistant at each stage:
• "Here's the code from my printer's screen, can you set it up so I can print without using the touchscreen?" • "Here's my STL file, please slice it and print it in black." • "Please check this map for Braille and for how raised the features are before printing." • "Let me know what you find, and don't start the print until I say go."
That's the whole process. The technical work, such as connecting to the printer, slicing files, and building Braille, is handled by your assistant. Your part is simply to describe what you want and make the calls that are personal preference, like color and label placement.

Setting Up a Command-Line Assistant This section explains how to get an AI coding assistant, the service referred to throughout this document, up and running on your computer. It uses Claude Code as the example, since that's the one this guide is written around, but the same general idea applies to other similar command-line assistants.
What Is a Terminal? A terminal, also called a command line, is a plain text window on your computer where you type instructions instead of clicking buttons or finding things on a screen. On a Mac, this app is called Terminal. On Windows, it's called PowerShell or Command Prompt. Because everything in a terminal is text, it tends to work very well with a screen reader, often better than visual programs do.
Opening a Terminal On a Mac, press Command and Space together to open Spotlight, type "Terminal," and press Enter.
On Windows, open the Start menu, type "PowerShell," and press Enter.
Installing Claude Code Claude Code is a command-line assistant made by Anthropic. Using it requires a paid Claude account, such as Pro or Max; a free account alone won't work. If you don't already have one, you'll be prompted to set that up during sign in.
On a Mac or Linux computer, open a terminal and type the following, then press Enter:

On Windows, open PowerShell and type the following, then press Enter:
irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex
Once that finishes, type claude and press Enter to start it for the first time. It will open a browser window asking you to log in with your Claude account. After logging in, return to the terminal, and you're ready to go.
To double check it installed correctly at any point, type claude --version and press Enter. It should report back a version number.
Using a Different Command-Line Assistant Other similar AI assistants that run in a terminal exist as well, and they generally follow the same pattern: open a terminal, type one short command to install it, sign in, and then describe what you want in plain English. The exact install command will differ from the one above, so check that tool's own instructions for the precise command to type, but the overall process is the same regardless of which one you choose.
Getting Comfortable You don't need to memorize any commands to use this service. Once it's running, you simply describe what you want in plain English, the same way this whole guide describes. If anything is unclear, it's always fine to ask the assistant to explain it again in simpler terms.

I have been using Claude code to install and setting up games with the features i want. As i write this Claude Code costs $20 per. Month, and for me it is well worth it!
