Adv class recommendations?

Just getting into riding adv. I have zero experience off road on 2 wheels, but 20+ years worth of quads, sxs's and offroad trucks.

I want to shorten the learning curve on a big bike by taking an adv class this fall or next spring. Im in tri cities, but willing to travel 5 or 6 hours to attend a multi day class, maybe even a single day.

Anyone have any recommendations as to where to go? On a ktm 1090r, but also considering buying a cheaper dirt bike to learn on. End goal is to confidently ride gravel forest service roads, and 2 track jeep trails. Not interested in anything hard-core or single track at this time.

Unstable bars while approaching stop.

Hi all,

Ive seemed to either developed a bad habit, or installed some equipment incorrectly, or bought some tires that are a touch squirrely, but I cant narrow it down.

Ktm 1090r adventure. Just installed new springs in the forks and shock to match my weight, dialed thr stock suspension in as good as can be without revalving, wnd replaced some bald street tires with some tusk 2 tracks.

Since ive done this work, when slowing down to come to a stop, ive developed a bit of a wobble. On or off the brakes, from 15mph down to about 5 mph. Its not much, but does veer the bike around slightly.

Ive tried being extremely loose on the controls, and tried fighting through it (made it worse holding tight).

It isnt a huge deal, and im guessing its more of a aggressive knobby tire on the street thing, but wanted to make sure it wasnt something I overlooked.

Can fork alignment cause it? I followed procedure, but these are the first forks ive worked on. Is it something im unconsciously doing by chance? Would a stiffer steering dampner help at the low speed, or will it exaggerate it?

Adventure 1090r heat mitigation?

I recently purchased a 2018 1090r. I love the bike, but the heat is killing me!

Overall it isnt that bad, but my right leg is absolutley burning up anywhere im not doing 50mph+

How big of a difference would gutting the at make at reducing heat here? Would I need to tune if I gut the cat? Its got a wings slip on already.

How about if I gut the cat and add a rottweiler intake, into needing to tune territory then?

Anything else to do that would help with the heat? Probably wont be as bad with tech 7's on, but im still waiting on them to make more of my size (16)

Thanks!

Hole in ktm rim seal, help?!

Seems I got to aggressive with the spoons, made a little hole in my rim seal.

Can this be patched somehow? I want to ride tomorrow and theres no powersports shops open near me, and I doubt they would have a new seal on hand even if they were.

Bicycle patch kit maybe?

My first successful tire change!

Got my first adv bike a few weeks ago, and am just starting the process of making it mine.

Had some shot older tires on it, so I got s set of tusk 2 tracks. Ive been dreading the install based on reviews. Had a free bit of time this evening to start tearing stuff apart, and figured id just give it a try, and if it was to much of a pain id take the wheels and tires into the local shop. To be separated from my money.

About 30 min later, I was setting the bead. Wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Had a generic tire bead setter from Amazon that worked ok, and used a big clamp to hold the tire down a bit. Wouldn't want to spoon theee on or off by hand on the trail, but im confident I could with the right spoons.

Fork rebuild and re spring starts In the morning, then rear tire and rear spring. Cant wait to get back to riding it instead of looking at it!

Old soul moto, a decent choice for us bigger folks.

Getting into motorcycling as of recently, and was underwhelmed with the choices in motorcycle protective gear for larger folks.

Couldn't find much for real reviews about old soul moto out of Canada.

I took a bit of a leap of faith on one of their armored shirts, and am super happy with what I got.

I am 6'4, 385# and wear a 4xlt in typical t shirt or hoodie. Using their sizing chart I went with a 7x, and it fits absolutely fantastic. Its comfortable, doesnt look like crazy riding gear, and customer service was absolutley fantastic. I made a mistake that would have cost me extra $ in shipping, they went above and beyond fixing the problem for me (that I caused, 1000%).

At first this purchase was a "better get something until my weight loss puts me into something more mainstream", now im not so sure if that was the correct thought process. Im happy with it, and will buy again as my weight and size continues to fall.

Headlight switch repair?

My 1090r uses a combination switch from a 890 due to the cruise control. The low beam has quit working on the bike, high beams work fine.

The low beam doesnt seem to have a detent, or any unique feel when you turn the headlights on, but it does on the high beam. Im wondering if the combo switch has an issue at the low beam spot.

Does that sound right? I dont have a frame of reference to how the switch should feel, as i just bought the bike. If thats not right, is it a common enough issue to have repairs talked about, or do I just replace the assembly?

Thanks!

Local independent motorcycle mechanic?

Looking to get a shock spring swapped out on a shock for my ktm. Will have shock in hand with spring, basically just need someone with a good motorcycle spring compressor.

Haven't talked to the usual shops, but most of the time they hit ya with 1 hour minimum labor charge, and it won't take 5 min.

Willing to pay for someone to swap it for me, but who?

Any independent guys around that would do 5 min of work for 50ish bucks?

My "new" motocamp tent

Been rocking a mountainsmith mountain shelter lt for a few years backpacking. Decided I wanted a floor of some sort for warm weather trips with bugs.

Girlfriend got me this for Christmas last year, finally have had a chance to take it out and set it up (back injury and new child kept me busy).

Im pretty impressed for a cheap tent. Its no durston, but for us mortals its got quite good build quality.

Never even considered motocamping when I got this, but with a recent addition of a ktm adventure in my life, its gonna pull double duty.

Anyone else running a trekking pole tent from a bike? Alot of my motocamping will include hiking, so im not upset needing to have a pair of poles with me.

Help with missing clutch parts, 2018 1090r

Just purchased a 2018 1090r, absolutley in love with it. It will only start on neutral, so I grabbed some contact cleaner thinking maybe the clutch switch was gunked up. It seemed fine, but the little rod that pushes against the switch is missing.

Is there a way to purchase just the rod?

Ive found a switch from rockymountainatv that I was about to pull the trigger on, but dont know if it comes with that rod.

Also found a website, cmsnl parts, that has a switch with the rod included for 45$, im more of a buy once, cry once, kinda guy and would rather have oem equipment if possible.

So, anyone know of a source for the rod, or if they come with the switch? Can I cut down a bamboo skewer for now while I wait on shipping to make it work correctly?

Thanks!

Whats it like living with tech 7's as your only boot?

Looking to get some tech 7's for adv riding, as well as a pair of touring boots for crusing around town. I cannot find touring boots in my size easily (16 us)

How would tech 7 enduros treat me as my only boot? Riding around town, light touring and adv riding. Are they atrocious if I need to run some errands, or miserable wearing for a 200 mile road ride day? Unorthodox maybe, but I dont want to overlook something and be miserable in em. Was considering just using my lowa tibets for local day to day stuff

First ktm. 2018 1090r adventure!

Got my first ktm today, an 18 1090r adventure!

Couldn't be happier, has a couple different seats, some soft panniers, wings exhuast and some other odds and ends. 10k miles on it.

Plan on getting new tires asap for it, but haven't decided what yet. New springs will be ordered tomorrow for it, (340# rider weight). Otherwise ill leave it as is for the rest of the year, may dump some rottweiler stuff into it come winter time.

Its super clean, cant wait to get riding, just wanted to share!

Adventure bikes, 1090r vs 1190, suspension enhancment..

Looking to get into a adventure touring bike in the next couple months. Really digging the 1090r, but keep finding 1190r's for similiar money.

I know the factory suspension is better on a 1090, and its a bit simpler on the electronics. Seems like the weight savings is mostly negated after installing a center stand on the 1090.

Im a large guy, either bike will need suspension work. If I picked up a 1190 instead of a 1090, is the suspension not able to be re worked to the same level as the 1090? Does the electronic suspension make it harder? I figure ill need springs minimum, but will probably have some valving work done as well.

Seems like if a nice 1190 popped up, the end bike would be so similiar to the 1090 end they would almost be indistinguishable?

Does the heavier flywheel make that big of a difference in traceable power on the 1090?

Use will be 45-120 miles of pavement, then gravel forest service roads and 2 track jeep trails. No single track, everywhere i would be going would be doable in a stock 4x4 truck.

Size 16 boot manufacturers?

Hi all,

Fixing to take a msf course next month, with goals to pick up an adv bike to tool around the pacific northwest shortly after.

Trying to buy gear now, and hitting a bit of a road block when it comes to boots.

I wear a size 16 (52 euro), and there just doesnt seem to be much out there. Im going to pick up some tech 7's for the offroad stuff, but wouldnt mind something different for quick jaunts around town to go along with them.

My search hasn't turned up anything outside of tech 3's and 7's!

Any other Bigfoots out there that can recommend me something different?
