Adventure bike for extreme purposes

Hi folks,

I’d like to build an adventure bike for travelling around Europe alone in extreme conditions (TET, enduro trails, highways, etc.) Due to my limited budget, I can’t afford a Yamaha Ténéré 700.

There are two bikes that came to my mind: the Honda XRV750 Africa Twin and the Honda XR650R. I know these bikes are designed for totally different purposes.

Which one would you choose for this kind of use?

In the case of the XR650R, I would definitely replace the fuel tank with a bigger one, and of course I’d add a rally tower to the bike. For slightly more extreme riding, I think the XR might be a better choice considering its lower weight.

On the other hand, the XRV750 would probably be a better choice for longer trips, especially for highway riding.

Is there anyone here who uses an XR or an XRV for the same purpose?

More specifically, I’d like to travel from Hungary to Norway, Scotland, etc.

Thank you in advance for your ideas.

Only 110 miles in and the Kove is impressive

Used to work for a euro dealer, have owned 10+ different bikes from every genre. Labored over this decision because CHINA.

Now I want the 800 and their MX offerings too.

New bike adventures

Spent the past weekend exploring SW Indiana. Covered bridges, gravel, dirt, mud, water crossings. Kept up with the big bikes (Desert X and R1250GSA) just fine.

"little" upgrade

What a great buy the Rhinowalks! Not even 200 euros and quite impressed by the quality of those panniers.

I can really feel the difference between before setup and this one 😅 that's a big deal!

Those little adventures does count :)

For me, sometimes, is adventure itself to get out of apartment and just go. Most of the time i don’t have any goal, so i don’t go anywhere. Which is not best for mental health.

In this case I set goal a fastfood cake. No reason. Just had enaugh of everything.

Best cooling solution for a long motorcycle trip?

Me and some friends are looking to embark on a world tour with motorcycles. I am planning to buy the transalp 750. We are looking for a smart cooling solution to keep some cold beverages and food cold during the trip, and I´m not sure what the best solution might be. Stumbled across this top box solution that looks pretty neat: Top box cooler however I am having trouble finding a way to get it shipped to europe. I found it directly on taobao (chinese site), but they don´t offer shipping to europe. I am also considering just buying a huge thermos food jar and just filling it with ice packs, maybe that will last a couple of days with a good quality thermos, hopefully a lot longer than a normal cooling bag. Any thoughts or tips?

Part Number? 2021 Africa Twin DCT

I lost a bolt out of my top case rack and was wondering if anyone knew the part number or how I could get a new one. The bolt came out of the circled mounting point. Thanks.

Last ride today for this set of tires !

Rode 380 miles today in Colorado out of Littleton. I started by going up deer creek canyon down into foxton and buffalo creek. Then thru deckers to woodland park and up towards cripple creek thru victor. Then down phantom canyon to canyon city where I fueled up and got lunch . Then thru Florence to bishops castle then to west cliff and down thru Cotopaxi . Followed the Arkansas River to royal gorge then into guffy, to get back into woodland park . Back to deckers from there and headed east past rampart range road into sadalia and home to Littleton. I left at 10am and was back at 6:25. The temperature ranged from a high of 80 in canyon city , to a low at rampart range road of 50 . I got rained on multiple times but not that hard . I only almost got pulled over twice 😐. Here’s a couple pics

My First Off-Road Ride

Today I was honestly at the point of giving up. I crashed or dropped the bike around six times during the ride, and by the end of the day my hands were so exhausted I could barely grip anything anymore. Most of the crashes happened near Reward Mine on steep uphill sections filled with loose rocks and boulders. Picking the bike back up became incredibly difficult, so I eventually called for a tow truck, but every company I contacted told me they don’t deal with motorcycles. At that point I seriously thought I was done and almost gave up completely.

Then, almost like a miracle, another rider happened to pass by and stopped to help me. Not just once, but twice. He made it look so easy, but to me it honestly felt like a lifesaver moment. Without him, I probably would’ve still been stuck out there.

Later I stopped by a repair shop and found out my tire pressure was at 45 PSI. The mechanic said that was way too high for off-road riding and probably the reason I had almost no grip. They lowered it to around 25–30 PSI, and after that the bike felt dramatically more stable and controllable off-road.

Today also made me realize I packed way too much stuff for this trip. The extra weight made the bike much harder to handle. Next time I’m definitely packing much lighter.

Who likes bridges?

Great couple of days buzzing around Quebec. Didn’t find out until my ride home there was a big Adv Bike event in La Pêche. I was riding please close to there. I would have joined in had I known. Next year!

Trying out new TET routes, man I love this thing!

Such an awesome bike, did 297km yesterday, of which 70% was mud (yeah not my greatest idea, riding offroad after 3 days of rain xD) took me 6hours, but could easily go for 300km's more, never had a bike that was so easy to ride which gave so much fun!

Dunlop Trailmax Raid awesome 50/50 tire, even with all the mud it did great :)

Am I doing this right?

Went camping this weekend off the back of my scrambler 400. I needed to bring more than would fit in my backpack… so I strapped my second backpack to the pillion seat. Good idea I thought, but it had me seated so far forward that it was uncomfortable. I’m gonna invest in a cargo tray for the rear before I do this again.
