Gentleman and gentleladies we did it - We got Yugo

I made a website for our plan to buy a Yugo in Serbia and drive it back to Latvia

I made this site for a project me and my friend are doing this summer.

The idea is stupid but real: we fly to Belgrade, buy a Yugo, and try to drive it about 3,100 km back to Riga, Latvia.

The site is meant to be part story, part fundraiser, part live trip hub. It includes the route, cost breakdown, donor stickers, sponsor placements, Plan B, and eventually a live GPS map during the trip.

I tried to make it transparent because the fundraising angle is obviously delicate. We’re putting our own money in too, and the donation idea is basically “put your name/logo/sticker on the car and become part of the bad decision.”

Would love feedback on the site, especially:

  • does it feel trustworthy enough?
  • is the tone clear?
  • does the donation model make sense?
  • would you follow this kind of project?

Two Latvians want to buy a Yugo in Serbia and legally drive it to Latvia. What should we know?

Hey everyone!

We are two guys from Latvia doing a slightly stupid but honest project: we want to fly to Belgrade, buy a Yugo, and drive it about 3100 km back to Riga.

The funny part is the car.
The serious part is that we want to do everything legally and not become trapped in Serbian paperwork hell.

We would really appreciate advice on:

  • where people actually look for Yugos in Serbia
  • what red flags to avoid when buying one
  • whether there are mechanics or garages near Belgrade who know Yugos and could inspect one
  • what paperwork foreigners need when buying a Serbian car
  • how export plates, temporary registration, insurance, and border crossing usually work
  • whether buying from a private seller or dealer would be smarter

We are also documenting the whole thing as a small project called Yugo To Riga, so if any Yugo owner, mechanic, garage, or local car person wants to help, we would happily mention/promote them in the project.

But mostly, we need local wisdom before we fly in and do something dumb with too much confidence.

Thanks in advance!

Planning Belgrade to Riga in an old Yugo. What should we prepare for?

Hey!

We are two guys from Latvia planning a very questionable road trip: fly to Belgrade, buy an old Yugo, and drive it back to Riga.

Rough route idea:

Belgrade → Sofia / Bucharest area → Cluj → Budapest → Kraków / Białystok → Riga

Around 3100 km, about 12 days total, one driver.

We know this is not the normal “comfortable road trip” approach. That is kind of the point. But we still want to prepare properly.

Looking for advice on:

  • how many hours per day is realistic in an old small car
  • border/country-specific things we should not forget
  • what emergency gear to bring
  • how much buffer time to leave for breakdowns
  • whether any parts of the route are especially bad for an old car
  • better route suggestions
  • things Europeans often forget on multi-country road trips

We are documenting the trip, but this post is mainly for planning advice. The goal is to make the stupid idea as safe and legal as possible.

Thanks!

Two Latvians are flying to Serbia to buy a Yugo and drive it 3100 km home. Rate our illness.

We are two guys from Latvia and we have developed a condition.

The plan:

  1. fly to Belgrade
  2. buy a Yugo
  3. drive it 3100 km back to Riga
  4. find out if the car, the paperwork, or our confidence breaks first

We don’t own the car yet. That is somehow worse. We are currently in the pre-Yugo era, looking for the right little Serbian shitbox with enough will to live.

We are documenting the whole thing as Yugo To Riga.

Any advice from shitbox owners is welcome:

  • what tools should we bring?
  • what breaks first on a Yugo?
  • what spare parts are non-negotiable?
  • how stupid is this from 1 to “call your parents”?

If mods allow it, I’ll put the project link in the comments. If not, just roast us and give mechanical advice.

Foreigner buying a Serbian car and driving it out of Serbia

Hello,

TL;DR: Two Latvian citizens want to buy a used car in Serbia and legally drive it out of Serbia to Latvia. What paperwork, plates, insurance, and legal steps are required?

We are two Latvian citizens planning to come to Belgrade and buy a used Serbian car, most likely an older Yugo/Zastava.

We want to drive the car from Serbia to Latvia, crossing several borders. We are trying to understand the legal process before we arrive.

Questions:

  1. Can foreign citizens buy a Serbian-registered car from a private seller?
  2. What documents must the seller provide?
  3. What documents must the buyer have?
  4. Can the car be driven out of Serbia immediately after purchase?
  5. Are temporary/export plates required?
  6. Where are temporary/export plates obtained?
  7. What insurance is needed to legally drive the car out of Serbia and through EU countries?
  8. Does the car need technical inspection before export?
  9. Is it better/safer to do this through a dealership or agency instead of a private seller?
  10. Are there any common legal problems foreigners should avoid?

We are not trying to avoid taxes, registration, or customs. We want to do it properly and legally.

Thank you for any advice.

Looking for local help in Belgrade to buy/export a Yugo for a Riga road trip

Hey Belgrade!

We are two guys from Latvia planning a project called Yugo To Riga.

The idea is simple and maybe not very intelligent: fly to Belgrade, buy a Yugo, and drive it all the way back to Riga.

We are looking for local help with the Belgrade side of things:

  • finding a decent Yugo
  • checking if it is actually roadworthy
  • finding a mechanic who knows these cars
  • understanding the paperwork/export process
  • avoiding obvious scams or “bro it drives, trust me” situations

If someone here knows a garage, Yugo owner, car club, mechanic, or just a guy who knows a guy, we would really appreciate it.

We are documenting the whole trip, so if a local person/business helps us, we can give credit/promotion on the car, website, and social media content.

Not trying to spam, genuinely trying to figure out how to do this properly before we arrive.

Thanks!
