Does finance pre-approval actually improve your position on an iX?

A broker told me to get finance pre-approval before I start looking at a used iX, saying sellers take the offer more seriously and there’s less room for them to move the numbers around. I assumed being a cash buyer would give me the stronger position, but maybe that’s not how dealer finance works anymore. Has pre-approval genuinely helped anyone negotiate, or is it mainly useful for setting a budget?

What actually gets a 997 seller to move on price?

I’m looking at an early 997 Carrera with around 140,000 km, full-looking history but a few tired tyres, stone chips and no recent clutch work mentioned. The seller has already said the price is firm, which usually means there’s at least some room somewhere. For anyone who’s bought one recently, what actually moved the number for you, or is it mostly a case of waiting for the right car? അമ I overthinking the negotiation?

Would you buy a JK without running your own PPSR?

I’m looking at a 2014 Wrangler JK Unlimited in NSW with around 140,000 km, and the seller says it’s currently registered so there’s no need for a PPSR. They’ve sent through a screenshot showing it’s clear, but I’m wondering whether I’m being overly cautious wanting to run one myself before paying anything. Is that just normal buying practice, or would you walk away if the seller pushed back?

Are parts for a grey-import 4G63 actually hard to find here?

I’ve had a Japanese-market 4G63 Galant for a few months and the motor itself hasn’t worried me, but I’m starting to wonder about the less common bits as it gets older. A parts bloke reckons seals and service items are easy, but trim, sensors and model-specific suspension could be a different story. What have owners in Australia actually struggled to source?

What’s the cheapest hybrid you’d trust for daily driving?

I keep seeing early Prius Cs and Japanese Aqua imports come up around the low teens, and the prices are all over the place for cars that look similar on paper. I’m after something for a 70 km daily commute in western Sydney, probably around 120,000 to 160,000 km, and don’t want to spend more than about $15k. Which cheap hybrid has actually been reliable for you, and which ones would you avoid?

What do you actually test on a 20-minute used car drive?

On Tuesday I drove a 2015 Mazda 3 with about 130,000 km and realised I mostly just listened for strange noises and checked that it stopped straight. The seller had already warmed it up, so I’m wondering how much you can really pick up in a short drive around suburban streets. What’s the one test or symptom that has actually saved you from buying a bad car?

Is a timing chain really a safer bet than a belt?

A seller told me the 2014 SUV I’m looking at is better than the similar belt-driven one because the timing chain never needs replacing. Both are around 150,000 km and priced about the same, but that sounded a bit too simple to me. Is a chain actually a big advantage for a used-car buyer, or does the service history matter more?
