Can summer tires be efficient by winter weather?

Good afternoon now I know that Winter is still a few months away but I wanted to ask this question early. So my dad 2025 BMW IX Xdrive50 came with those 22 inch wheels on summer tires. Now can summer tires be efficient by winter weather? In the upstate of South Carolina where we live we do get some winter weather here some times. Like last winter in January they was one weekend that we did get an ice storm then we did get a snow storm the weekend after. And it does get cold here but it doesn’t get into the single digits like it is in the northern states. But it does get below freezing here some times especially in January. Now if it’s snowing or icing outside we just don’t drive. But will those summer tires be ok when it gets cold or should we get winter tires for it? Because my dad hopes that we don’t have too because tires can be expensive especially for ones that are for 22 inch wheels.

Alternative Warranty (yes or no)

Looking at buying a used BMW IX and the dealership recommended a Triton extended warranty which costs 1/2 of a BMW Platinum. I’m very inclined to say no Any experience dealing either a warranty claim with this policy?

**UPDATE** 2027 BMW iX3 1,000 KM Challenge

Phewww are we glad that’s over… would not recommend!

The iX3 and X7 were flawless - managed 10.8 KWH / 100 KM avg for the trip and 1,011 total KM on the single charge which should be a new record for the vehicle (I didn’t check).

Rolled into the charging station with 2% charge and 16 KM showing left DTE. Swung back around for some more mileage just to make sure we beat the guys in Germany.

Looking forward to a normal drive home. 😄

Thoughts on where I can sell floor mats

My lease was up on my 2024ix and been trying to sell the all weather floor mats I bought but having no luck. I’ve tried Nextdoor and FB marketplace. Any other places I should be trying?

First long distance trip

I got my 2024 IX last week and I'm doing my first long distance trip tomorrow. Its 370 miles, so I am now trying to figure out where I can recharge during this route. I have not bought any DC adapters, so I will need a charging station that works natively with BMW.

What is the easiest way to do this? I tried using the myBMW app, but it finds charging stations that require adapters. Also, in my research, it says the IX natively supports CCS1, so I just need to find stations that have CCs1 charging? I am on google maps trying to find a way to have it flag charging stations, but it doesn't seem to have that support.

What's the most efficient way to plan this trip, set a 1/2 point to a charging station along the way.
Thx

First BMW, first EV

2024 iX 50. 17k miles, DAPP, Sport, and Premium packages. CPO. Met the previous owner as he was a sales guy at the dealership.

Came from a lifted Wrangler Unlimited, so the upgrade in tech and ride quality is absolutely insane. Driving is a joy.

LVL 2 charger gets installation finished today.

Also, don’t know if you BMW peeps name your vehicles but this is Hades. Seemed like the car and color he would drive.

Glass grille

I love 99% of things about this car. It is my happy place.

But two months ago, I had to spend $1800 to replace my front camera, and this weekend had the glass grille smashed by highway debris. Quote is $4k.

Tempted to turn it in for a car that doesn’t require me to replace the front every quarter. Am I crazy?

Lease end is coming up. What next ?

My lease is up in 2.5 months. I am starting my journey to research my next lease. What do you all recommend? I have enjoyed the iX immensely although never quite warmed up to the looks. Ideally would love to get the iX5 but don’t think they will be available in the US anytime soon. Other options are R1, R2, iX3, Gravity. But none of these feel super compelling. I have 2 kids so need decent legroom in the rear.

Starting our own 1,000 KM challenge in the 2027 iX3 tonight (Canada)

We know they did this in Germany already, but wanted to take a stab at it as just a couple of normal dudes. Starting in Niagara Falls, Canada and attempting to make it to Quebec City (940KM) on one 100% charge. If (huge if) we make it there, we will continue on and try to hit 1,000 KM.

Depending on how this goes, we might do it again in the iX xDrive60 and the iX5 when it comes.

Will be on YouTube eventually - good luck to us!

NC Lease Transfer - 2024 BMW iX M60 - $930/mo effective - 1,000+ miles/month - 20 payments left

**2024 BMW iX M60 — $930/mo effective — 1,000+ miles/month — 20 payments left**

I am purchasing 13,700 additional lease miles from BMW Financial before transfer. That puts you at just over 1,000 miles a month for the rest of the term, not the 366 the contract shows today.

**The numbers**

- MSRP $119,145. Storm Bay Metallic, 610 hp, 0-60 in 3.2s

- Payment $1,304.85/mo plus your state tax

- $7,500 cash incentive from me at signing

- Effective cost to you: $930/mo

- 20 payments left, matures 5/17/2028

- $0 down

- Odometer 26,564

- Transfer costs you $100 credit app + $400 transfer fee, paid to BMW Financial

**Miles**

- Contract today: 7,315 miles left, which is 366/mo

- I am buying 13,700 more before transfer, at my cost

- You get 21,015 miles, just over 1,000/mo

- Anything past that is $0.30/mi

**Warranty**

- Battery: 8yr/100,000-mile high-voltage warranty, covers the full term with room to spare

- Bumper-to-bumper: 4yr/50,000 mi, in service 06/28/2024, runs to 06/28/2028. That is six weeks past maturity, and at normal mileage you finish around 47,000 of the 50,000. The factory warranty covers your entire term.

- BMW Ultimate Care, $0 scheduled maintenance through 06/28/2027

- 4yr unlimited-mileage roadside assistance

**Condition, straight**

Like new inside and out. Four brand-new tires just fitted at my cost, the OE Yokohama ADVAN Sport V107E Star BMW spec, not budget rubber, so it matches what BMW requires at turn-in. Full tread, invoice available. No open recalls, no open campaigns, clean CarFax, one owner. Happy to send photos of anything you want to see, or do a FaceTime walkaround.

**Why this is a good deal**

Skip the $8-12k drive-off and the wait. The hard depreciation is already paid. A $119k car at $930/mo, nothing down, on new tires, with over 1,000 miles a month and the factory warranty covering your entire term.

Transfer runs through BMW Financial. Standard credit app, they approve you. Serious inquiries only. DM me here.

BMW iX3 50 xDrive: Update after the first few weeks + an 830 km road trip

Follow-up to my first-impressions thread. here. Got the first few weeks behind me now and just completed a longer road trip of 830 km. A few observations:

Charging: The car’s charging performance is usually higher than what the charger itself can deliver. I had zero connection issues at the stations, even though I deliberately mixed providers. It’s every bit as hassle-free as Tesla Supercharging.

Chassis: Excellent, typical BMW.

Noise: Wind noise is barely noticeable, even at high Autobahn speeds.

Assisted driving: Very relaxed on the Autobahn – though my wife isn’t a huge fan when I take my hands off the wheel. :)

Consumption: 20.2 kWh/100 km on the Autobahn – actually a touch less than my Tesla Model Y.

Voice control: Also clearly better. “Find the nearest charging stations with at least 300 kW along the current route” gave me a correct result within a few seconds.

Overall, still very happy with it.

Advise on parking the ix in a short garage.

Hi guys I've had a test drive and put a reservation down on a 2022 ix. I absolutely love it but it will be far and away the most I've ever spent on a car and a possible target for theft / vandalism in our neighborhood.

I've never parked any of our previous cars in our garage but ideally I'd like to park the ix in it. Width isn't a problem but the garage is "only" 5.1m in usable length. The specification state that the ix is 4.95m long, so I'd only have 15cm to play with, or 7cm front and rear.

The model I'm getting doesn't have the 360 camera but does the reverse cam actually show the rear bumper (or whatever protrudes the most) so I can creep back a centimetre at a time?

I'm planning on fixing something like foam on the rear wall or any other suggestions anyone has.

I plan to give it a bash (literally!!) for a week before I get the home charger fitted, hopefully in the garage.

Do you think this is doable and practical day to day.

Thanks for reading.

Am I missing anything?

Hi all,
I’m in the market for a car and have narrowed my choice to the BMW iX. Looking to spend ~50k out the door which narrows my choices to 2023 and 2024 models.

I was able to test drive a couple of 2024’s today (one actually with air suspension and one without), and I’m leaning towards the one with air suspension.

Here’s where I am looking for opinions/thoughts!

The car I am looking at is:

2024 BMW iX
63k miles, so no CPO. No accidents, clean carfax
Premium package
DAPP
Air suspension
$42k

The BMW dealership is also offering an additional 5 year, unlimited mile, bumper to bumper warranty (I asked, includes suspension and battery) for an additional ~7k.

Total OTD price is around $49.5k.

My only holdup is the high mileage on the car, but I figure it’s not as big of a deal with the additional 5 year warranty. I know it’s also rare to find air suspension option in a 2024 iX.

Is there anything I am missing? Is this a reasonable deal? There are lower mileage 2024 models but no air suspension, or 2023 models with air suspension for around $45k but the warranties on these would expire in the next 1-2 years anyways.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Just bought a 2024 M60 as my first EV - any advice?

I have been riding e-bikes and e-scooters for years and I decided to take the plunge and add an electric car to my transportation choices. I was originally looking for the xDrive50 with both air suspension and Driving Assistant Pro but was impossible to find one with both. Actually glad I went with this trim because though I didn’t think I would notice any difference the B&W audio is amazing. This is my first EV. Besides getting the Tesla adapters, is there anything else I should get? Besides efficiency mode, any other advice to maximize range? What have you guys been getting in terms of range? I drive 15-20 miles a day and plan to use Level 1 charging to keep the charge level topped off at 80% and use Supercharger for the occasional long trip. Has anyone noticed if supercharging has degraded their batteries? I still have a year left of factory and another year for CPO. What do people think of buying the Platinum VSC through BMW and for those that have, how much have you gotten it for? Feel free to share anything else you think might be important for an electric car newbie.

Used IX50 Canada

My wife’s Tucson PHEV lease is coming to an end, so I’m looking at what’s next. New EV leases seem incredibly expensive now, including the new iX3, so I’m considering buying used instead.

The iX xDrive50 has caught my eye. I’m seeing 2023 models around $55k CAD, despite being $100k+ new. The depreciation seems almost too good to be true from a used buyer’s perspective.

For anyone who owns or has bought a used iX, are there any major downsides I should consider? My thinking is that most of the big depreciation has already happened, and if I keep it for another 4 years it should still have some reasonable residual value. There also seem to be extended warranty options available.
Anything I’m overlooking?

Any advice for first time EV owner?

I was super excited to pick up my first EV this week! Got a 2024 Alpine White iX, fully loaded, 29K miles, still CPO for 2 more years.

I work from home and my driving is minimal, so I'll mostly be charging at home. I have a Tesla Wall Connector and just ordered the Lectron Adapter. The one regular exception is a ~330-mile drive back home, so I'll need to plan a fast-charging stop for that.

My plan so far: keep it between 20–80% daily, charge to 100% overnight before long trips.

For the current iX owners here — what do you wish you'd known when you first got yours? And with all the features, it's a lot to take in at once — anything that stands out as a "learn this early" must-know?

Appreciate any tips from the group. Thanks!

At home charging with Tesla Charger runining charger?

I have 2 Tesla chargers, and I have been using one with an adapter on my BMW and also with my Tesla just fine. Last week, the charge on my BMW dropped to 8amps max. I took the adapter off and tried it with my Tesla 3-4 times, and I got an overheating error every time, with a max charge of 8 kW. So I assumed the charger was bad.

I switched the adapter to my other Tesla charger and now I am only getting a max charge of 16a opposed to 32 on my BMW. Is it possible the BMW is ruining my Tesla chargers? Has anyone had this issue before?

More iX questions from someone shopping...

  • Are 21" wheels/tires going to be noticeably better-riding and/or less damage-prone than the 22"? Generally I like the look of the 22" designs better. Other pros/cons? Guessing 21s will be cheaper to replace tires.

  • I know the built-in nav map can display on the driver display. Can Android Auto map display on driver display?

  • What type of info displays on the HUD (if optioned)?

  • Pre-conditioning the cabin - I understand this can be scheduled for say 445pm every work day. What happens if I run late at work that day, will it turn off automatically after XX minutes, or would I need to remember to do it manually?
