City Guide: Aquarium de la Porte Dorée, Paris

Whilst the Aquarium de Paris is the best known in the city, as it is one of the oldest in the world, I find that it has its shortcomings. The admission price is very off-putting (€20 for 3 to 12-year-olds and €28 for those aged 13 and over).

I really like it, and I’ll write another post about this aquarium because I think that if you can afford it and you love jellyfish, the jellyfish area is incredible.

But the Aquarium Tropical de la Porte Dorée in the 12th arrondissement is a very good alternative, at a full price of 12e.

The building itself is incredibly interesting from a historical perspective – it was built for the 1931 World’s Fair – and you can combine your visit with the Museum of Immigration, which I think is brilliant.

Even though the aquarium isn’t huge, there are quite a few lovely species to admire, and it’s a really cool place to visit with children.

Eiffel Tower Tips - Sunset!

Hi Guys!
Little post to share my experience as a parisian about visiting the eiffel tower.

All pics are mine, (Canon 5d Mark III + 50mm lens), and taken a while back, during the Olympics.
The Eiffel Tower is obviously an amazing an iconing monument to visit at any time, but in my personnal experience these are the points where you'll get the most of it:

  • Go for the sunset! You do the ascension before golden hour, then you can see the golden hour from above and get superb pics of the city. I looooove the shadow of the tower on the invalides, it's so cool. Then, when you get down, you'll get to see the illuminations and you can go back to the metro to see the tower lit from afar.
  • For the price (36,70€ adult rate, 18,40€ 12-24yo), I don't think the last floor is worth it, but that's personnal preference.
  • Don't rush! Take the time to see the surroundings, obviously the trocadero is superb but the invalides, musée rodin, bir hakeim bridge, are amazing.
  • Most people rush the eiffel tower so don't be scared from the crowd, most people move really fast so if you're willing to spend some time there you can almost always get beautiful pics with less crowd. Like in museums, you have to let groups pass.

I'm eager to hear your opinions, enjoy your visit!

Auxerre Cathedral, France

This amazing cathedral is found in Auxerre, Burgundy, France. It was constructed between the 13th and 16th centuries, on the site of a romanesque cathedral from the 11th century, whose crypt is found underneath the cathedral. I highly recommend the visit, Auxerre is a cute little cities with a lot of beautiful churches, to visit for a day if you're in the areas.

Subreddit to post Museum recaps and pics

Hi!

I was wondering if there was subreddits to post about museums and exhibitions, making recaps and posting photos, other than r/travel or local subreddits. r/travel seems great but posts about specific museums might be to niche for such a large sub.

German stoneware jug, ‘Bartmann’ style, XVI century [3169x4388]

I don't have the reference for this one specificaly, but it seems like it's a Bartmannskrug, a type of brown-glazed earthenware jug featuring, on its neck, a bearded men. They were produced in large numbers from the 16th to the 18th century and are usually made of Rhenish stoneware. Production began around 1520/30 in Cologne.

And I find them really funny. The guy seems friendly, in some way.

You can see this one in the "Musée des Beaux Arts" in Lille, France.
