Help with my feminist capstone project: Find community, do good and get awesome (free) nails in the process!
Hello!
I am currently working on my capstone project at the University of Washington and would love some feedback and involvement from you lovely folks! Here is a little about my project. If you have the time and are interested in contributing, please engage with this post and/or fill out the google form at the end!
The TLDR is that my project is organizing meetings where people get together to do our nails as a form of care/bonding + organizing to provide this form of care to communities who need it.
What inspired Project Polish for the People?
I was deeply inspired by the collective action of the r/RedditLaquersitas and Indie Polish during the height of the ICE protests; I loved seeing people use their nails as a canvas for expression of their emotions and opinions, and how the community came together to comfort each other during difficult times. That subreddit has been a wonderful space of creativity, compassion, and joy, and I had the desire to translate this into real-life spaces…and so my project was born!
What is Project Polish?
A nail collective inspired by feminist care ethics. The objective of the collective is to use the power of nail care to create a space for community members to engage, express themselves, receive and give care and compassion, and work together towards making small and large-scale changes in our communities.
How does Project Polish Work?
Project Polish aims to facilitate inclusive gatherings where everyone is welcome to come together in a space to engage in conversation and creativity as they do their nails (or each other's).
In addition to general meetings, focused meetings will also take place in order to give care to communities where a little care goes a long way. Current plans focus on hosting gatherings that offer manicures and access to nail polish to support individuals in domestic violence shelters, transitional housing, senior centers, and LGBTQIA+ organizations.
Polish will be provided for free, through de-stashed/donated polish and my personal collection to start. A goal is to provide a “polish pantry” for community use, but I am still brainstorming on how to make this feasible and accessible.
How can you participate?
As of right now, I’m attempting to physically organize in the greater Seattle area, but I am happy to help create and coordinate efforts in other cities and possibly online communities!
Donations of destashed polish and nail supplies are deeply appreciated!
Anyone who might be willing to volunteer their website/server and/or art skills for posters and organizational content would be super appreciated! Social media on the way :)
My hope is that everyone can be nourished through nails and lacquered with love! Below is the discord server (under construction) and google form for feedback, or sign up if you’re interested in participating! Thanks, everyone, have a wonderful day.
BTW: The discord is also a space for members just to come in and hang out, share manicures and bond as well!

Feeling guilty for being a terrible pet parent girl dinner
Canned southwest corn, mayo, parm, chili + hot cheetos + Svenhard pastry (not pictured)
I have 2 cats and dog, and I've been feeling extremely guilty about my ability to care for them lately and it's eating me up.
When I first got my babies, I was busting my ass working 2.5 jobs, one of which was an upscale pet product company with an amazing discount. I was able to spoil them with endless treats, high quality food and anything else they could ever want. I could afford vet care. Best of all, I was able to bring my dog (Grover) to work with me so I'd take him to the dog park everyday afterwards. Life was good.
Moved a state away and started working at a vet clinic that paid very well and also offered wonderful discounts on pet care. Things were good, then one day I suffered a work injury that changed the trajectory of my life. Dislocated my shoulder, herniated a disc and lost the ability to walk for a while, underlying chronic illnesses began to worsen and I lost the ability to earn any income outside of my fixed workers comp. That was nearly 8 years ago and that fixed income has remained essentially the same at about $2000 a month. When I first moved here, my rent was $1250. It's now roughly $1900. Grover's food was around $15 per bag of topper, now $38. The dry mix used to be $45, now $70.
Grover is 13.5 years old now. He's a big goof ball and I love him so so much but I have this crushing guilt that I'm not caring for him the way I should be. His mobility is declining and he can't do the stairs anymore. He needs a little boost to get up sometimes. He barks for me to comfort him when he cant see me. He has ocassional issues with incontinence. He's incredibly clingy. I look into his eyes and still see that happy puppy I love, and I know he still enjoys life because he is still obsessed with his food and treats and plays with me in his old man way.I sleep on the floor beside him/in his bed with him because it's the only way he'll settle down. If I'm lucky I get to crawl back into my bed with my partner, but even then sometimes he'll wake up and softly bark for me to take him out at 3am or tuck him back in. I am almost late to class/am late to class on mornings he takes a while on his morning walk. Sometimes I get frustrated because he'll bark for me to sit with him or is unsettled when I need to study (I'm graduating University this quarter). I've been receiving financial aid so that little boost has me doing okay, but no amount of budgeting will cover the pace my expenses have outpaced my income.
I feel awful that as I'm writing this, he's partially out of food and so are my cats and I have no idea how I'm going to afford it before next pay day. I feel awful knowing I cant afford vet care and my babies all need dental work, and Grover could probably have a better quality of life if I could afford regular arthritis shots and pain medication. But I can't, and I feel like I'm failing them. Grover is getting to the end of his life and I'm literally crying as I write this thinking that if it happened tomorrow, I wouldnt even have the money for euthanasia or cremation. Won't qualify for care credit or scratch pay or other financing options either because technically I have no income (workers comp isn't taxed or considered income).
I'm exhausted. I spend so much time and effort caring for Grover that I've neglected myself. I haven't been able to visit family a state away or travel in years because I can't find a petsitter who can handle his needs, especially now that it seems like I'm the only one who can comfort him. Im graduating next month and would really like to take spend some time outdoors and camp but feel like I cant.
If you read this far, thank you sm. I just needed to get things off my chest 😭
Spent like ~25mins looking at socks today and was surprised that I couldnt find a single pair of 100% (or even >80%) cotton socks. So many of them were more than 50% cheap fibers and ridiculously priced at that! And more than half the inventory of socks and underwear were in locked boxes...what has happened?!
Edit: Forgot to add the cotton after the percentages 🤦♀️
Second edit: Second edit to specify that this was in a brick and mortar store and that I understand that some elastic is needed sometimes so really I mean ~90ish% cotton.
