What made you decide to actually buy a property abroad?

So, for context, I recently got my Japanese PR which made me eligible for super cheap (sub 1%) home loans and I am tempted to buy a house, my EMI will be cheaper than the rent which I pay currently. But at the same time, I'm always under split mind that what if I decide to go back to India, then this will be a hassle to manage or to sell (properties here don't appreciate much in value).

So, turning to the community for if you want to share your experiences. At what stage of life (or at what moment) did you decide to sign that sale deed?

Blinky lights look so beautiful... But has a very low wife approval factor, lol

I wish I could move my bed next to it.

Any community / hobby group in Tokyo?

I'm looking for any community / hobby group here in Tokyo, I've tried meetups and all, but I am really longing to be able to converse in Hindi with people. If there is any, please share.

After so much anxiety. I am finally a Permanent Resident

Hey fellow NRIs,

I have achieved a small milestone which I've been aiming for since a really long time, specially with all the changes with respect to PR rules happening (not just Japan, but in many countries, I got to know from the news). Took me years of waiting and hoping nothing goes wrong with my application and finally it is here... Now I am free to do whatever I want in this country and it is not related to my Job and employer anymore...

Today when it arrived, I realized, I had nobody along my side to share it with 🥀... And so, I am sharing this with the r/nri community.

Next stop. Naturalization....

Faking an IIS welcome page to entrypoint of my homelab domain, just for fun...

My homelab servers hosts many sites and apps but all of them route through 1 subdomain, that particular subdomain has the A record for the IP address of my homelab and others are just CNAME pointers to that subdomain... Internally then traefik would reverse proxy based on the request for each site and all.

For quite a few years, I just showed a static "OK" text on that page to quickly check uptime and all. I was bored and had some free time and Claude limits, so spun up a fake AF welcome page for IIS to show on the entrypoint page.

I have baked it into a ready to use docker container, for anyone wanting to use this - https://github.com/aayusharyan/fake-iis - (A star would be appreciated)

If you have any other thing that you use as welcome page to your public facing site, pleaase share, I would also see.

All of this at no additional cost. My only regret is not having this upgrade done earlier. I waster almost 3 years with slow internet... Now I can download my Linux ISOs more quickly.

BTW, what do you folks do with extra bandwidth?

Hey all,

I am in a split here.. Obviously not asking the internet for what to do as situations vary from person to person. But just generally sharing things and checking perspectives...

Backstory, I, 28M, moved to Japan in 2022 with the hopes of getting Naturalized and living here... But then about 2 years ago, I met a college friend living in India and we immediately connected. That kind of connection I never expreienced in my whole life... The plan was she would come to Japan after some time... But with change of events, that is no longer possible.

Now, I am in a split. Should I go back or should I stay here... We tried LDR but it's not that helpful... Staying here would definitely help towards the long term plan, you know, buy a house. build assets, FIRE... But with a place like Japan were we don't really have many Indians around. It feels empty, specially now.

All of this, plus the new change of requirements for Naturalization (5y -> 10y residency)... The job uncertainity in India... (Here at least the Social security is good). Then the state of affairs, like weather, politics, daily life struggles back home.

I am at a junction of life where whatever I choose, I will be loosing something meaningful. (:
