anyone successfully use IBKR to trade CAN$ to USD$?

A relative lives in the US but has a Canadian bank account. They want to transfer CAN$ to IBKR, and trade the CAN$ to US$. This is to avoid the 2% markup fee that Canadian banks charge for any Canada-to-US transfer.

The problem is that this requires a wire from the Canadian bank to the Canadian brank of IBKR. But the Canadian banks won't let you do a wire between Canadian banks unless you are present. My relative doesn't want to travel up to Canada just for this reason alone.

Has anyone done this before and have a better process to follow? Note both of us have contacted IBKR and their support has been no help.

Providence healthcare is horribly expensive

Every time I go to Providence I forget how badly they overcharge. Even a short discussion gets billed like some complex/long encounter. Then when you ask for the records explaining why it was coded that way, they route you between billing, the clinic, and records vendors while the bill is still due.

This is my 3rd time going through the wringer with them.

Don't they have any shame? It's sick.

Providence always "upbills"?

Someone in our family saw a cardiologist. First time. Did ECG, and then the doctor spoke with them for 10 mins saying it wasn't an issue. Bill came back as "high complexity" and was exceptionally high. Discussing with providence and they were refusing to change it.

Any advice?

(note - it probably should say "often" instead of "always")

For anyone reading this, providence bots or someone else has decided to downvote all my responses in the thread. In short, we are following up with providence to get the documentation on what was done.

looking at ways to cool my attic

I have a walk-in attic with a HVAC. Noticed it was +40F hotter than the rest of the house (and outside). It has some insultation, but not a lot.

I read about reflective foil install, and also reflective paint that you can use to help reduce the heat of attics during the summer (also retain heat during the winter).

Does anyone have experience with this and if it's a good (or bad) idea?

best way to wire CAD > CAD funds to US?

Canadian citizen, but resident in the US. I have a RBC Canadian bank account, and US bank account. Also have a IBKR US account.

If I wire RBC CAD > US it will do the conversion CAD>USD with a 2% spread, which is atrociously high. I'd like to send RBC CAD > US (as CAD) as a wire transfer. But RBC won't let you do this through their app.

Is there any way to do this without having to travel to the RBC bank and physically do a wire transfer of CAD > CAD to the US?

On a different note, why is is it nearly impossible to get ahold of your bank directly? It will take 2+ weeks to schedule an appointment with them.

samsung 57" energy savings / brightness is terrible

I've had some brightness issues with my monitor for some time. I couldn't adjust "brightness" on my monitor so instead I used my Nvidia app for doing this. It was semi-effective, and tbh not the best. The monitor always seemed too bright. I finally learned that the Samsung monitor had "energy saving brightness" enabled. When I turned it off my monitor immediately dropped to a lower brightness setting, which is far better on my eyes.

I have no idea what energy saving brightness is doing but it's NOT saving any energy afaik. I could put my kill-a-watt on this, but I highly suspect it was maxing out the brightness. Or at least making it far brighter than it needed to be in a dark room!!

options to transfer CAD $ from a bank in Canada to the US?

We are trying to avoid the 2% spread that occurs when you transfer money from a bank in Canada to a bank in the US. Have found a private bank that will receive CAD directly in the US, but RBC doesn't allow wire transfers to the US from CAD > CAD.

I understand we could use wise (?) or other transfer services that drop the cost to <0.8% but still pretty high vs. just a direct transfer.

Has anyone encountered this and have a better solution?
