Need advice: what to wear for first ever conference with 15 min presentation? Environmental modeling in Ireland

Hi guys! I come from an extremely informal country. I will be presenting my research for the first time in Ireland. I do tend to have a more fun sense of style but since it’s my first time, I’m not sure if I will be taken seriously wearing that kind of stuff. What is generally worn by women to these events? How modest or ‘fancy’ do I need to be (please be specific because in my country wearing nice jeans is fancy LOL). Can I wear a dress or sleeveless? Is it beneficial to wear something memorable? Additionally, there is some kind of conference dinner and awards event, which I’m not sure if I’m expected to attend, and if so, if I’m expected to dress nicely.

I can share some photos of what I could wear if necessary. Thanks!

[IIL] podcasts about life in interesting/unique places like “Extremities”, WEWIL?

Open to documentaries as well! But preference towards podcasts. I just want to learn about life in places super different from where I am. Extremities hasn’t released anything since 2020, but they did series about St. Helena, Svalbard, and more. TIA!

Soil and water sciences B.sc. + Enviromatics (field that uses data science to solve environmental and agricultural problems) research M.sc. what are my skills?

Hi all! I am nearing the end of my masters degree and I’m starting to think about the next stage. My issue is that I’m not an agronomist, I’m not an environmental or water engineer, I’m not a data scientist… just a bit of all three. What can I go for and how can I market myself?

Here is my background:

B.sc.ag in soil and water sciences. Internship at an agtech company. Student job at a water, sewage, and drainage engineering firm.

Currently, research masters in enviromatics. I use python and took some courses that used matlab but I would also say that I’m mostly vibe coding. My research includes using a specific mix transformer for a computer vision task that has to do with automatically assessing post-earthquake damage. That’s where the data science and environmental science meet. However, I feel that I mostly know how to use this one specific model. I don’t have general data science knowledge outside of my research, but I feel confident in my ability to learn all of it and apply it.

I’ve taken courses in modeling, numeric methods, digital twins, complex systems, and machine learning (no grade). My natural sciences background is mostly from my bachelors, but includes fluid mechanics through porous media, plant physiology, geology, etc.

My dream was to work in agtech or envirotech but it’s a small field. I don’t know what job titles to search for, what I’m qualified for. I don’t know where to start.

I’m not in the US but hold US citizenship. I can work remote but it’s not ideal for me. I’m located in Israel.

Where do I begin? What paths could I consider?

TIA!

Fellow Israelis: how do you feel about the situation here? Have you considered immigrations? Why/why not?

Hi guys, American-Israeli here who made Aliya 11 years ago. Did the army and miluim. Love this country and its people. I did a half a year study abroad in the Netherlands which convinced me that my place is in Israel.

But lately, I’m scared. This government is pushing us towards theocracy. Every time I think they can’t do worse and they do. My friends and family have spent more time in miluim than civilian life and sacrificed too much. Dealing with post trauma too. I could handle all that more or less if this government weren’t actively encouraging draft-dodging.

I’m scared of democracy eroding, women’s and LGBTQ rights as well, greater rabbinate control, political defunding of cultural and academic institutions, a growing haredi minority that doesn’t work or serve, violence in the West Bank, so much more. I feel these issues are existential.

And yet I don’t see myself anywhere else. As a former diaspora Jew, I know how bad it is out there as well.

How are you guys handling it? What are your thoughts about your futures?

Any recommendations on what I can do to fight for our democracy?

TIA

▲ 13 r/rosalia

I need to know if other people felt this way. The sound was just ATROCIOUS. The base was so loud I felt like I was under attack. And since I had seen Rosalia at the Amsterdam Ziggo Dome, I had something to compare it to. Amsterdam was perfect. I’m so glad Berlin wasn’t the only show because I would have been so disappointed. I can’t say it ruined the show for me because it’s Rosalia but WOW it seriously brought it down. And also, there was a light that shone directly into the eyes of the audience where I was sitting in the middle. It was blinding and we couldn’t see things properly sometimes because of it.

Did anyone else have this experience?

Hi! I am a tourist visiting Germany with my boyfriend for the first time for the Berlin Rosalia concert on 1.5. We will be visiting a friend in Göttingen and then traveling from there to Berlin on Labor Day in order to make the concert. We have an AirBnB in Mitte. It seems like we can leave Göttingen by train by around 15 in order to reach Berlin by 18, so we have some time to get ready before the concert at 20:30 at the Uber Arena. However, I have been told that Labor Day is a day for protests and parties which can cause transport difficulties. Is there anything I should know? How can I find out about this and plan around it? I'm worried about missing the concert but I also only have this one day with my friend in Göttingen so I don't want to leave too early.

I would appreciate some advice. Thanks!!
