Feeling seen
Just found this sub (Peri & ADHD in particular) and man, it’s hitting home.
I have questioned whether I have ADHD since middle school. I’ve just never sought out a diagnosis. The last year or so, I’ve been not only noticing peri symptoms, but an increase in ADHD things. My brain often feels like mush. Last weekend was something else though.
My husband was gone in the morning when he came home around lunchtime, I was curled up on the couch in pajamas looking stressed out. He asked what was wrong. Out came a nearly incoherent ramble.
“This morning I woke up early and decided I really wanted to do a project. Something to update or brighten something, or just change something, but I don’t want to spend a lot of money. I thought maybe I’d paint our bathroom. But if I’m going to paint, I should take down the towels bars I hate. I’ll need to fill and the holes and patch the walls before I paint. If I’m going to change those things, I should do the light fixture too. That’s going to need patching. If I change the color of the light fixture, the sink faucet won’t match anymore. The faucet style I prefer won’t fit this sink, but I can’t find a new sink that will fit the current countertop. I could just buy a whole new vanity, but I don’t want to spend that much, and the current one is much better quality. So I’d probably have to get a new counter top and sink. That means a new backsplash too. If I replace all the other hardware the shower/tub hardware won’t match either. Now that project feels way too big I don’t want to do it anymore. Then I thought maybe I could finally pick some curtains for our bedroom windows (they have blinds, but I want curtains over them). But I don’t know what length to get. I still don’t know if I want to put a bench or a makeup space under the dormer window. I need to pick that before I know what curtains to get. I really do want the bathroom painted though. Maybe I should just do that and not do all the side quests. But if I don’t do all the extra things, I’m just leaving more work for myself for another day. Let’s be realistic though, if I don’t do all of it now, I probably won’t ever do the rest of it. It’ll just be another unfinished project, so maybe I shouldn’t start the project at all. That was literally my whole morning. Just thinking about projects, pricing things out, talking myself out of ideas, and now I’m sitting here all sad because I wasted the whole morning, never started a project, but also didn’t do anything I should have, so I’ve accomplished nothing.”
And then I started crying. I’m grateful to know I’m not alone.
