"I don't know which components & augments to choose" - the tool

I'm still fairly new to Grim Dawn, and one thing kept driving me nuts: every time I swapped a single piece of gear, my resistances would fall out of line.

And since I don't know GD's (huge) item pool well, fixing one resist meant lurking the spreadsheets to hunt down the right component or augment. Worse, since they often give more than one resistance, there was usually an even better combo - one that capped my resists and fit in some extra health and damage - that I just couldn't spot fast enough by hand.

So I built a tool that can. It's called "I don't know which components and augments to choose" (IDKWC&ATC in short, so it's easier to remember).

What you do

  • Set your faction reputation, so it only suggests augments you can actually buy
  • Set which slots still have a free component / augment socket - or just import your player.gdc savefile
  • Set your current resistances and the cap + overcap you want to hit
  • Set stats you actually care about - damage types, health, OA/DA, speed, etc. - as Ignore / Nice to have / Priority
  • Force component/augment skills in the build (if you want to)

What the tool does

It fills every free slot to close your resistance gaps while maximizing the stats you picked, and hands you three builds side by side - Balanced / Offensive / Defensive - with a full effect comparison so you can see exactly what each one trades off.

What the tool doesn't do

  • It can't read your current resistances for you - you have to enter them yourself. Doing that automatically would basically mean rewriting GrimTools.
  • It doesn't have data from FoA as I don't own that DLC yet (sorry).

The tool runs in the browser. I wrote it in PHP, Claude ported it to be fully client-side in JavaScript. It's a fan-made project, and I'd genuinely love feedback - especially from people who know the game better than I do and can tell me where the suggestions are off.

Slop or not? Tell me what you think! I'll post the link in the first comment.

Interactive Zoom not working properly

Hey, when I use the Interactive Zoom tool (the movable map-box thing) it is not working properly:

  1. Sometimes the map shows in a different place than top left corner, but the controls stay as it was there.
  2. Moving around with the cursor over the map works weird, for example when I move the view left, it moves up instead. Exactly as if the map had a random rotation. I tried to upload 250KB video with an example but its stuck loading.

Ideas?

First run in session is slow

Hey, when I first launch VLC it opens terribly slow - we're talking 20-25 seconds slow. Any other VLC start in that session opens it up immediately. Have you noticed something like this and have a solution or tips where too look?

Im running v3.0.23 64bit on Win11 with reasonable specs.

Last week I was bored, so I decided to swap around the labels on my wife's spice rack.

So far, she hasn't noticed. But mark my words, her thyme is cumin.
