Player Usage & Impact Assessment: PBKS

Based on MVP stats published after each game in www.espncricinfo.com

Total Impact Points for a player in a match is a numerical value which is the sum of his Batting and Bowling Impacts. These Impacts are calculated based on the context of a batting/bowlingperformance. Context is based on an intelligent algorithm that quantifies the pressure on the batter/bowler at every ball of an innings. The Impact is thus a factor not only of the runs scored/wickets taken/economy rate, but also of the pressure under which these performances happened.

Some observations:

  • 6 players played all games and 9 players played 10+ and overall used only 19 players.
  • PBKS spent 81% of their auction purse on players who played 10+ games which is the highest in the league.
  • PBKS relied mostly on their big name purchases overall. The highest ROI is Shedge who is #18 in the league in terms of ROI.
  • Arshdeep had a taper down towards the end of the season. On average, he along with Jansen, had higher impact per game than Chahal/Shreyas Iyer.
  • Unfortunately, Omarzai who had the best average impact, was only brought in late into the playing XI
  • Nehal Wadhera was the biggest disappointment of the season having played half the games and contributing close to nothing.

Player Usage & Impact Assessment: KKR

Based on MVP stats published after each game in www.espncricinfo.com

Total Impact Points for a player in a match is a numerical value which is the sum of his Batting and Bowling Impacts. These Impacts are calculated based on the context of a batting/bowlingperformance. Context is based on an intelligent algorithm that quantifies the pressure on the batter/bowler at every ball of an innings. The Impact is thus a factor not only of the runs scored/wickets taken/economy rate, but also of the pressure under which these performances happened.

Some observations:

  • KKR had one of the more stable squads in the league - 10 players played 10+ games with 5 playing all of them, but they spent only 59% of the auction purse on these players. Remaining 41% went to players who played less/DNP.
  • KKR spent 25% of auction purse on players who played 4 games or less. Metric heavily skewed by Pathirana's bid.
  • 3 uncapped players turned out to be great return on investments with Tyagi leading the pack by a mile. He fetched 1422 points/crore compared to 0 for Pathirana, 9 for Ramandeep, 17 for Cam Green and 21 for Rinku
  • Dubey was unfortunately a late find - he has the 3rd best avg impact per game after Narine and Finn Allen, but played only 4 games
  • Contrary to what one might think, Vaibhav on average has contributed more compared to Rinku, Rovman and is just below Raghuvanshi. He has bowled in some of the tougher portions of the game which had high pressure. Also he might be a case of recency bias as his contributions came in the beginning of the tournament when KKR was not doing well, but Raghuvanshi's contributions came later when KKR were winning.

Player Usage & Impact Assessment: DC

Based on MVP stats published after each game in www.espncricinfo.com

Total Impact Points for a player in a match is a numerical value which is the sum of his Batting and Bowling Impacts. These Impacts are calculated based on the context of a batting/bowlingperformance. Context is based on an intelligent algorithm that quantifies the pressure on the batter/bowler at every ball of an innings. The Impact is thus a factor not only of the runs scored/wickets taken/economy rate, but also of the pressure under which these performances happened.

Some observations:

  • Spent ~67% of purse money on players who played 10+ games which is overall good utilization. (PBKS - 80%, RCB - 74%, GT -72% )
  • Unfortunately, Madhav Tiwari got a chance pretty late and played only 3 games and has the higher avg impact per game amongst the entire team
  • Starc has the next best average impact per game, but played less than half the season.
  • In the trade of Ferreira-Rana, Ferreira (253) has scored more impact points than Nitish Rana (160). Trade was a net negative for DC
  • Stubbs and Nattu were the big money disappointments for the season, giving poor ROI for the money spent

Player Usage & Impact Assessment: LSG

Based on MVP stats published after each game in www.espncricinfo.com

Total Impact Points for a player in a match is a numerical value which is the sum of his Batting and Bowling Impacts. These Impacts are calculated based on the context of a batting/bowlingperformance. Context is based on an intelligent algorithm that quantifies the pressure on the batter/bowler at every ball of an innings. The Impact is thus a factor not only of the runs scored/wickets taken/economy rate, but also of the pressure under which these performances happened.

Some observations:

  • Along with MI, LSG used the most players - 23.
  • Mohsin had the best avg impact per game. Unfortunately, he played only half the season for LSG due to injuries
  • Mohsin and Inglis are in the top 5 for total impact, even though they played half season or less.
  • Manimaran had the 3rd best impact after Mohsin and Inglis, but played only 4 games
  • Mukul fetched 84 impact points in 1 game, but his 9 other games yielded only 77 points
  • 3 players yielded less than 10 impact points per crore spent - Pant, Mayank, Pooran and Avesh was a close 13. On the other hand, Prince Yadav yielded 1661 points/crore.
  • LSG spent 69 crores (~57% of their auction purse on the above 4 players)
  • Arshin had the most negative impact across the entire league at -32 points from 2 games.

Player Usage & Impact Assessment: MI

Based on MVP stats published after each game in www.espncricinfo.com

Total Impact Points for a player in a match is a numerical value which is the sum of his Batting and Bowling Impacts. These Impacts are calculated based on the context of a batting/bowlingperformance. Context is based on an intelligent algorithm that quantifies the pressure on the batter/bowler at every ball of an innings. The Impact is thus a factor not only of the runs scored/wickets taken/economy rate, but also of the pressure under which these performances happened.

Some observations:

  • MI used the joint most (LSG) number of players - 23. Only 2 players played all games and just 7 played 10 games or more.
  • MI spent ~48% of their auction purse money on players who played less than 10 games (compared to PBKS-80%, RCB - 74% and GT - 72%)
  • MI has 3 players in the top 10 for lowest overall impact - Markande, Krish Bhagat and Malewar.
  • Shardul Thakur, followed by Chahar and Ashwani had a higher avg impact per game than some big names in the squad
  • 2 South Africans lead the pack for best ROI. In fact, all foreigner players did reasonably well for MI. Its the Indian contingent which did not live up to expectations.

Some interesting observations

  • Mukesh had a slightly better average impact than Akeal and overall more impact than Dube and Kartik Sharma in the context of the game.
  • Overton has the best average impact per game, even higher than Samson. His loss was huge blow for CSK.
  • Akeal had a higher average impact than Noor.Sarfaraz and Urvil had higher average impact than Kartik.
  • CSK used 21 different players - (only less than MI who used 23 players) of which only 7 played 10 or more games, indicating absence of settled squad. Table topper RCB used only 16 players of which 11 played 10+ games.
  • Gurjapneet had higher average impact than Brevis.
