Phono preamp separates

Hello,

My current setup:

TT: ATLP120X (currently using internal phono) & VM95E stylus.

Amp: TANGENT AMPSTER II

Speaker: PSB ALPHA 3

I am interested in getting a external phono amp. I read that a tube phono amp can add extra warmth to the audio. But i am not quite sure what it exactly means tho, i kinda wanna try it anyway lol.

Also what would be the general advantage of getting a external phono over using the internal one? I know that like the music feels much cleaner but other than that anymore advantages?

Thanks for the help!

Discussion about Sources: Vinyl Records vs CD vs Digital FLAC files

Hello,

This might be a interesting topic and one that i can't really find a straightforward answer to.

I was looking at videos of Audiophile showcase at expo shows etc. and saw majority of them use a Turntable (usually extremely high-end) as their source when demonstrating the stereo system.

I was wondering would it not be better to use Hi-RES FLAC files (24bit/192Khz) for demonstration as they technically can show more details in the audio?

The second question would be which one overall is better in a home budget setup. Now i do personally own a CD player and a Decent Turntable (ATLP120x). CD playing is straightforward, pop it in and they sound clean, good and overall great -but can be a slightly louder sometimes.

As for records, i have had mixed results. Some of the older records(used 1970's- 80s) sound good or even great. I need to clean them but it is alright. However with new records I have had some hit & misses. Like Pink Floyd's The Wall 2016 Remaster actually sounds great even close to CD quality clean (apart from the crackle) however lets say a new vinyl record from a band Like Maneskin, the sound quality was atrocious like it sounded very low quality somehow. I cleaned it with a spray and microfibre cloth on top of carbon fiber brush. It wasn't that it was sounding strange just very bad audio wise.

I am thinking of sticking to CD for new artist/recordings and Vinyl record for older music recorded on tapes.

Digital FLAC files, i have a offline library of about 100ish albums was wondering a easy way to play them on my stereo setup.

Currently I use my DAP (Fiio JM21) and connect it via 3.5mm to RCA and use line out mode to my amp (Tangent Ampster ii). I was wondering if there is any way to have a dedicated device which can store on board files and play it back. Should i just get another cheap DAP like Hiby R1 to use as another dedicated source?

Thanks for taking time to read and respond to my essay : D.

Budget Hi-FI setup

My humble listening space also my room . Quite cosy feeling actually.

I have made the stereo equilateral triangle, had the speaker toed in but felt that was too aggressive so left them firing in straight line. I feel the sound stage is much better like this than the toe in.

The height difference between the two speaker in picture appears a bit more but in reality when measured by tape it is just 1.4 inches. It is fine i ran out of books.

Speaker: PSB alpha 3

Amplifier:Tangent BT Ampster ii

CD Player: Tangent player iii (Gapless : D)

Turntable: ATLP120X

Stack question: Amp and CD player

So i have the amplifier which is Ampster ii. It is mostly made out of metal from what i can tell.

However my cd player is Tangent iii and is mostly plastic.

So these two are one generation different ( the remote don't work for eachother lol)

I read that you put the amplifier on top but i don't feel confident putting it on my CD player.(Weight :1.6kg according to website)

The amp doesn't get much hot. The vents are on the side.(Weight 2.20kg)

How should i stack them so they don't get damaged i suppose.

New speakers: PSB Alpha 3 (replaced my edifer 1700bt)

I was quite unstaisfied with how my R1700bt sounded like they were alright but i could feel like they sounded artificial.

So i sold them (for a loss sadly which i did expect but better to cut my losses early) .

Researched for a while and found the PSB alpha 3 and demo'd them at my local hi-fi shop.

First impression were thet sounded so clean, the bass felt controlled.

They sound very detailed compared to my old speakers.

So far done setting up just cleaning up the place and will sit down listen to some tunes.

Amplifier: Tangent Ampster ii.

How Much of an Upgrade? Current: R1700bt. Planned: Tangent BT Ampster ii or iii with Polk Audio XT15 / similar price range

Hello,

I have the option to trade my current Edifier R1700BT and get new speaker + Amp. at my local hi-fi shop.

My heart is set on the Tangent Ampster ii or iii. (depending on availability here, I prefer iii but is hard to find in stock lately)

https://www.tangent-audio.com/tangent-ampster-bt-ii.html

https://www.tangent-audio.com/tangent-ampster-bt-iii-hdmi-tanampbtiii.html

The reason is I already own the Tangent CD iii player. So i want to make a cute stack with those amp and cd player lol. Also I like the small footprint as this would take less space on my desk.

The speakers, I am looking at Polk Audio XT15(Freq response: 48Hz—40kHz). or something in similar budget around (€150 -200€)

My current sources: the above CD player and ATLP120X.

I feel the R1700BT are filling my room good so i am not necessarily looking for something louder just bit more refined in the mids and a bit of lows.( Freq response:60Hz-20kHz) I have also improved its bass response by putting Isolation foams and moving them away from walls etc. The soundstage and instrument separation is alright and even good in more acoustic tracks like Wish you were here or other similar songs. However when i was listening to Ok Computer(CD) last night I just felt a bit too much muddiness in the mids in some songs.

I was wondering if this will be a decent upgrade.

I do have space constraints and don't need anything louder/bigger really. Can't put a sub as neigbours may complain in a apartment.

Returned the ATLP 60x and got the 120X

Initially bought the ATLP60x spent a week and half with it felt unsatisfied. So asked here what I should get if i return that TT. 120X and 3Xbt were my options, however the store didn't had those in stock so got the 120x. It is a heavy boy carrying it was a bit of a hassle but got home fine.

Setup was easy over all tonearm balancing was slightly tricky but done alright.

I am still getting used to full manual table. I did like the automatic features on the other table. But it is alright.

Now i feel happy and satisfied. I did spend a bit too much for my liking but this is a table I think should last me atleast 5 -10 years as i don't need a better table for my use need as a secondary source.

Quick question, how do i turn the light off without taking it out? Also do you guys know a way to stop auto lift the arm when the record is finished playing?,

AT LP60X return and upgrade to potentially AT LP3XBT or AT LP120X

Hello,

A couple of weeks ago i got the AT LP60X and I have been enjoying the experience of listening to records more than i thought I would. However from further research I found that this TT is not very upgrade friendly with only like two different cartridge upgrade option. and can't change much of the pressure settings for cartridge. I feel like I want to get a better Turntable now and not worry later about upgrading to something more expensive while having this one around.

I bought the TT from HMV in Dublin, so I am not sure if they do take returns of open package but I am going to ask soon anyway. If someone has some info about HMV either in Dublin or UK please let me know.

Now for my upgrade i was leaning more towards AT LP3XBT cause it is automatic, i actually like pressing the start button and then moving to my Listening position and a few seconds later the music starts. The tone arm pressure can be adjustable and anti-skate can be adjusted too. I also researched that you have much more upgrade paths.

For the ATLP120x this just looks so proper with all the upgrade potential and the S shaped tonearm. But it is not automatic and also a chunky boy. from what i saw it feels also a bit taller. So i am a bit confused cause this one just looks idk cooler but may not be for me.

My current setup however is a bottleneck with Edifier R1700bt speakers which I will be upgrading in September for my birthday, I am eyeing an integrated amp with Wharfedale Diamond bookshelf speakers so the turntable will sort of be good for the future speaker update too.

Kindly let me know which one will be a better upgrade route.

Potential upgrade path from R1700bt

Hi ,

I have been using the R1700bt for almost 3 months and in that time i feel like i have learnt somewhat about like how sound work and shi.

I went from not liking these speakers to actually liking them by changing the speakers positions to create wider sound stage to even create the phantom speaker phenomenon which is soo cool, using isolation feet for better bass response and using some sound treatment in my room.

However now I can feel some of the limitations, like i was listening yesterday to Moody blues in Search of the lost chords which has a lot of like orchestra parts. The speaker struggled with the instrument separation, like it feels fine when i am listening to a bit more simpler laid out song or even some simple acoustic rock however something more complex i think it struggles with. I hope you all understand what i mean kinda hard to out in words as i am not familiar with Correct terminology. Also no sub out on my model so dtruggled with low frequency bass.

However i have no problems with the loudness of these speakers i suppose like they fill my room more than fine and i don't turn them over like 50-60% sound. So i want like bookshelf speakers with like better details rather than loudness i suppose.

Budget including a integrated amp €500.

So i was looking around and saw some stuff please see below and kindly let me know if those speaker are good for what i am looking for.

Integrated Amp:

Tangent BT Ampster iii - https://www.hifihut.ie/products/tangent-ampster-bt-iii-bluetooth-stereo-amplifier?_pos=3&_psq=Bt+a&_ss=e&_v=1.0

I feel this amp is perfect for me it is 2.1 channel. Has a built-in phono, a good quality DAC CS4344. Loads of input which is important to me , i already have the CD iii player from them so i can make a stack lol.

Also i don't understand how the Ohms in speaker work. But from what google says this Amp should work with all the speakers in my list.

Speakers:

  1. Klipsch R-40M

  2. Q acoustic 3020C or 3010C

3.Wharfedale Diamond 12.1i

4.Mission LX-2 MKII

  1. Polk XT 25

Please feel free to recommend any other ones that you guys think i should see.

Making my TT dust cover darker

Hi,

I am thinking of painting my dust cover on my TT black cause it is sort of placed in front of my tv and there is reflection that bothers me.

Would painting it with idk some black paint from art shop work or something else?

Updated setup

A few days ago i posted my setup and was asking if a speaker update would be helpful and most people said fixing room acoustic related issues will be helpful.

Guess what they were right.

First thing i did was add sound isolation feet to my speakers and this made the bass response tighter and it does not feel boomy at all.( Not visible in the pic but they are rubber 50mm i think thats what it said on the box)

Second was spacing the speakers out which as you can see above i have done but now they are not on the same height which is a bit annoying but the sound coming from two different angles to my left and right feel so good. Need to find something to permanently raise the height but books will do for now. I have also toed them to form a equilateral triangle. Also i don't really use the radiator even in the winter so it shouldn't be a problem.(Electric bill go boom)

I am thinking of ordering some acoustic foams for the right speaker wall on the side and behind. Should help to reduce the boxy effect.

Any other tips glad to hear.
