Should I cut at 1, 2, or 3? Don’t care about the stem length so much, but would love to maximize number of blooms. Thanks! 🫶🫶

For anyone deciding between the two: my experience with Yakima Jaylow vs Thule Hull-a-Port XTR

I purchased one pair of the Yakima Jaylows from REI because of the cost, $249 compared to the Thules at $279.

Two weeks later I found a steal of a deal on barely used Thule Hull-a-Port XTR.

Having used both, I would say it’s worth it to spend an extra $30 for the thules.

The whistling sound of the jaylow is much more pronounced, whereas the hull-a-port is like a soft tea kettle. Tangibly, the folding/locking lever of the thules feels sturdier.*

*when reading reviews online, I did notice a couple people comment that the locking mechanism on the yakimas failed. Of course that may be user error, but it did make me nervous.

The way each clamps onto my crossbars is different, but both felt solid. The yakimas have side by side clamps and the thules have a rubber-coated metal band.

That’s all. Hope this helps someone in the decision making process if you were wavering like me.

First time dahlia-ing update! (Zone 6a)

I planted six tubers in a 3x5 raised bed. Started them indoors first. I didn’t do a great job with fertilizing and watering, but they are finally on the way! I didn’t label what went where, but I thinkkkk this is the fire pot dahlia. 🌸🌸🌸

Are these keeled treehopper nymphs? What to do about them?

Yakima Jaylow vs Thule Hull-a-Port Pro XTR?

Thanks for answering my questions yall! I bought the Yakima jaylows and want to buy another pair, but I am flirting with the idea of spending $30 more for the Thule fold down version instead. The jaylows def whistle when folded down, and I read a couple reviews on REI where the locking mechanism failed and the upper bars collapsed. Scary.

So, any experiences / advice / input welcome!

Ideas for kayak carriers that can stay on?

It took me a while to install these j racks, and I can’t imagine doing so every time we want to take the kayaks out. What is everyone else doing?

Is there something else you leave on permanently? If so, what is the impact on mpg?

On the car: Thule hull-a-port (bought used on fb market), attached to the swing out crossbars

Thanks! :)

Dahlia chronicles: update from Maine zone 6a 🌸🌸

I started these guys indoors and planted them outside beginning of June. I only just now fertilized them, whoops. First time growing dahlias and I’m winging it a bit.

I pinched the new growth above the third or fourth set of leaves. There was also some accidental pinching when the wind swept them off my deck during the hardening off phase. They’ve taken a bit of a beating but seem to be faring well.

It’s a 3x5’ bed with three Caitlin’s Joy, one terracotta, one firepot, and one mystery. More crowded than the internet recommends, but hey.

Curious, how much scratching is acceptable/safe when shopping for a used kayak?

I’m shipping for a used ~10 ft kayak to use in lakes, ponds, and some close to shore tidal river trips. This is a photo of one I found on fb marketplace (old town otter), and the scratches made me wonder how much is generally considered acceptable.

I have the hardest time identifying creeping bellflower vs aster vs snakeroot. Any tips for ID before they flower? (Maine, US)

Here’s a bunch of growth around my house and notes of what Google lens perceives them to be.

Plz help me save this if possible!

Broke the entire top off when transplanting into garden bed. Can I propagate the broken off stem in water?
