Finally Finished building my MR-1 - First Part

Coaster - mostly from the Langmuir tutorial.

Got 95% through my machine build and stalled a bit as I got busy with work, finally got back to it and cut my first part today.

Constructive feedback welcome - I messed up the chamfers slightly (rough edges) and had to pause a few times to make adjustments. Not perfect - but thrilled to actually make a part. Been wanting a machine for a decade or two to make parts for my various projects.

Them Duke boys are at it again

Fenrir is obsessed with jumping to the planter this week. He has not yet succeeded. He can easily climb into the planter but that's insufficiently dramatic.

Arboreal tegu TOT

I told him he's not Arboreal but he is insistent. This is his first TOT.

This adorable little monster just gave me a black eye - Shame him

He's not even sorry!

We had a great morning of taming/handling and he is getting much more comfortable with us. His basking spot is elevated and I was sitting next to him...

He gave me the cutest look ever, then walked over and put a paw on my nose. Thought we were having a moment but apparently eyelashes and crickets look pretty similar... He leaped up and grabed my eyelid before I could react. He thrashed it for a good ten seconds before giving up and looking moderately annoyed he couldn't get it loose.

Really 1000% my fault- got complacent especially as my previous tegu Loki was so tame. That said Fenrir could at least look a little sorry, or at least less proud of himself. Glad this happened while he was too tiny to do much damage - but my eyelid is rapidly bruising/swelling so this is going to be fun to explain.

Edit: I may have lucked out, bruising looks better, eye is less swollen. May not have a full black eye after all.

Found among some Macrolepiota [Upstate, Ny]

I have a large patch of parasols in my yard, growing out of some old grass clippings. This was growing among them - at a glance thought it was another parasol but stem is plain, annulus looks different, etc...

Apologies lost track of the base.

Would someone mind IDing? Location is upstate Ny

Thank you in advance

I wanted to introduce my new puppy Fenrir

He just arrived this week from rose city reptiles, and we absolutely adore him already. We converted half our bedroom into a greenhouse with a multi level layout to get him extra space/exercise/ enrichment. Also has a banana tree and a pindo palm (pindo fruit is a big component of natural diet and are hard to source in our area).

[Edit] The black planter at the back is his digging/burrowing area. Using peat moss, play sand, and topsoil. There is a second deeper planter covered in the corner - planter is to open it up once gets bigger, and once my back recovers from filling the first planter.

Was so proud of the enclosure so of course he started trying to escape within 30 minutes of getting home.

Blurry lizard post

He seems to like the box he was shipped in. Think it may have some substrate from original enclosure- leaving it in cage as it seems to be a comfort item.

He loves this water dish even if its a bit big for him

Another view of the enclosure

First picture of him

Basking area may be slightly overkill right now

Huge thanks to /u/fallowdeer for advice on the greenhouse setup

Starter Camera/Lens recommendations for insect macro photography

Would anyone be willing to make recommendations on a starter camera / lens for insect macro photography?Roughly a $500 - $600 budget. Largely looking to take still photos, mostly outside. I love photographing insects for inaturalist and the like but I'm using a camera phone currently which is far from ideal even if the autofocus wasn't actively malicious.

I'm getting stuck between looking at lenses, and extension tubes and figuring out how best to distribute budget. I'm embarrassed to say I don't know quite what I need and what gets me the best quality for my budget. I assume flash/diffuser are also highly recommended here - would be interested in suggestions there as well (not included in that budget).

Thanks in advance for the advice... i was into macro photography when I was younger but that was pre-digital photography and I've forgotten nearly everything. Normally I try to research rather than ask but I'm having a terrible time narrowing it down or finding similar recommendation threads.

Mayfly molting in a spiderweb

I hadn't seen this happen before, though with the number of molting mayflies it may be more common than I thought.

Assembling my Langmuir MR-1 - Is this pitting on the linear rail a cause for concern?

This is my first machine so I don't have a great sense for how big of a deal this is. I noticed a small pit on the linear rail during assembly. Would you consider this to be cosmetic or is it likely to cause issues (for work, or machine longevity)?

Thanks in advance for the help!

MR-1 Concrete/epoxy pour

Didn't come out perfect but I'm pretty happy (at least assuming all is positioned right and final assembly doesn't lead to heartbreak). Used sumi black eyecandy pigment instead of the stock gray.

There was a little separation between cement and front of tray - thought I thoroughly filled it during the seal coat layer, but apparently not enough as I had a bad time with bubbles in that one spot.

Also a little worried about coolant pooling under the rails as epoxy didn't flow under the way I expected. Still excited to have the major patience requiring steps done with finally!

Coincidentally my mechanic let me know yesterday a repair on my truck might need a machined part - no idea if I'll be done in time to make that myself - but that officially qualifies buying a garage cnc as a practical decision and I will take no notes to the contrary.

Getting ready to pour concrete for the Langmuir mr-1 - any last minute advice?

Tried to do my research up front but I'll admit I'm nervous about the next step. First CNC machine, been wanting to get into it for decades.

Based on other threads I added silicone around all the bolts in the tray. Printed a TPU plug for the old drain holes because tape seemed a bit... too janky. Saw a bunch of complaints on the drain but think that was in the original version, the upgraded drains look sufficient.

Using quickcrete 1101. Debating adding sugar for a bit of extra working time. Ignore my wall - we're halfway through the electrical upgrade for the shop.

One side is to the wall, but there is room to get behind the machine (as long as I don't gain any weight).

Anything else I missed, or tips you wish you had? About to do my final positioning checks, pouring concrete tuesday. Thanks in advance!

[TOMT][BOOK][1990s or earlier] Kids book with a thermos full of magnets

I'm remembering some book I liked as a kid - sadly can remember almost nothing about it. A boy is exploring somewhere, maybe a barn. He finds a thermos full of magnets. He tells his grandfather who is disgusted because he heard 'maggots' instead of 'magnets'.

The book was illustrated and definitely geared towards kids.

Anyone have any idea what my brain is in about here? Thanks in advance.
