Yahweh vs Hashem
Is there a difference between the two? As far as my understanding goes, they both refer to the monotheistic God. Does one suggest a different aspect of said Being? Is it based on the sect of Judaism?
Thanks.
Didion - Slouching Towards Bethlehem
I understand that Joan Dideon has a great reputation. I also understand that the aforementioned title is supposed to be excellent. However, is this a good starting point for Didion? Is she worth it in general?
I'm only interested because of the allusive title, and hardly know anything about her or said work of nonfiction. Thoughts?
Middlemarch: let's get serious
Today I stumbled across an editorial from The Guardian saying that Middlemarch is the greatest English language novel of all time. Regardless of the claim's validity, you better bet your ass that my interest in the novel shot through the roof. But I have a few questions before I seek it out due to it's length:
How quickly does it take off? Is it a slow start or does it take off close to the beginning?
How is the rest of the novel paced?
Lastly, how bustling is Middlemarch itself? I struggle with more rural settings for novels, therefore preferring ones set in cities. If it has both aspects, please say so.
Thats it! No spoilers please! I don't care if it happens on the first page, don't tell me.

Is Kai Erikson's Wayward Puritans suitable for an intelligent person wanting to deep dive into deviance studies, or am I better off starting with Howard Becker's Outsiders? (Currently reading Stanley Cohen's Folk Devils and Moral Panics)

Is Pynchon worth going into comoletely blind?
I know hardly a spec about him, or his novels. I have heard of three of them several several times over the many years I've been alive, and never looked into them. All I know is that they are classics of pomo (maybe metafiction) and very long… Would it benefit me (should I read him) to know a little bit about the novel and/or his life? Or is going blind perfectly doable?
Also where should I start? V. is probs the best for me considering it's length and reputation.
Citrus on ika (squid) and/or tako (octopus) nigiri?
Last time I posted on here, someone suggested that I put a little fresh lemon juice on my scallop nigiri (was my first time) to enhance the flavor and do something with the texture I think. Damn, it was a really nice touch. Less daunting too.
Should I do the same thing with squid and/or octopus?
(I feel the need to try as many varieties as I can so I'm not hesitant of a 10pc chefs choice nigiri plate, nor a 10 course omakase!)
Of course I want to read *Lonesome Dove*, but it is overwhelmingly long and I have not delved into westerns. What I am wondering is, does LM have any books outside of any of his many series (with the exception of any book one) that are grossly engaging, accessible, and definitely worth reading to introduce myself to the author. To his style. To his world.
I'm thinking of of the *Thalia* trilogy, but have noticed that many times authors take a few books to truly find their own. And this trilogy is his first three books. Obviously. Thing is, I don't want his early work to deter me from *Lonesome Dove*.
Anyone have recommendations? Maybe *LD* is able to be read slowly, and in chunks? That is something I might be able to do.
I'm particularly interested in *How The Irish Became White*, but Routledge publications are pricey, and tend to be quite difficult reads.
I just don't want to waste time, money, nor brain power. It just sounds so fascinating though!!
Any insight on NI or this particular work would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
This one has never officially stayed on my TBR list, but I have great interest in it as some of the greatest minds of the 20th century are a part of this project. It just keeps coming back to mind. I find the psychedelic movement quite interesting. I am in recovery, but LSD was never really my thing. I had one trip, and it went horrible about halfway through. Still, I have interest in the topic. Thing is, I just do not want to waste my time, nor money. So…
Has anyone read this and would they recommend it? Please tell if it is a slog in the bog...
Thanks!
