Rangsk solves "Rain", one of our Palindrome puzzles

Rangsk has posted a solve of "Rain", one of our Palindrome puzzles - a medium board with fourteen palindrome lines running through it.

https://youtu.be/wpHa1E-3MEU

Fourteen lines sounds decorative until you remember that cells equidistant from a line's centre hold the same digit, so each one quietly copies information across the grid.

The link to play it yourself is in the video description, so you can watch the solve or jump straight into the puzzle.

Full disclosure: Rangsk records these in partnership with us.

⏰ Time Expressions - weekly challenge, Easy to Master

Welcome to this week's Time Expressions challenge. Five variant sudokus, one for each way we talk about time, with the expression built into the shape of the grid.

Choose your level

On desktop these open straight in your browser, nothing to install. On a phone they open in the Logic Wiz app.

One thing sudoku teaches you: you can beat the puzzle, but you can never beat the clock. Take your time anyway. Happy solving!

The clue that is not there: how negative constraints work in variant sudoku

Most variant rules add something to the grid - a cage, a thermometer, a line. Negative constraints do the opposite. They turn the absence of a marker into information, and they are why some variant puzzles solve from far fewer given digits than looks possible.

Kropki is the clearest case. A white dot between two cells means the digits are consecutive; a black dot means one is double the other. Under the negative constraint, every dot that could be drawn is drawn - so an empty gap between two cells is itself a statement: these two are not consecutive, and neither is double the other. On a 9x9 there are 144 orthogonally adjacent pairs (72 horizontal, 72 vertical), so a Kropki grid with a handful of dots is still handing you 130-odd facts. Beginners routinely ignore every one of them.

XV works the same way. V means a pair sums to 5, X means it sums to 10, and with the negative constraint in force, no marker means the pair does neither.

Some variants are pure negative constraint. Non-consecutive has no markers at all: no two orthogonally adjacent cells may contain consecutive digits, anywhere, ever. The whole ruleset is a statement about what you will not find.

And sometimes a constraint quietly deletes a digit outright. On a German Whispers line, adjacent digits must differ by at least 5. In a standard 1-9 grid that means 5 can never appear anywhere on the line - it would need a neighbour of 0 or less, or 10 or more. You can strike it out before making a single deduction.

What is your favourite negative-constraint moment: the deduction where the empty space did all the work?

Next Variants: 🔷 Vertex, Nabner, Dutch Flatmates or Chinese Whispers

Help shape the future of Logic Wiz!
Vote for the next Sudoku variant we should add:

🔺 Vertex
🔹 Nabner Lines
🇳🇱 Dutch Flatmates
🟢 Chinese Whispers

Vote in our poll on Reddit, or send us a support email from the app and mention your favorite variant.

🔺 Vertex (V-Sum)

Vertex uses a V-shaped marker connecting three cells. The middle cell (vertex) depends on the two end cells. These markers are scattered across the grid.

Rule:

The center cell (vertex) must equal either:

  • The sum of the two end digits, or
  • The difference between the two end digits

🔹 Nabner Lines

Digits on a Nabner Line:

  • Cannot repeat
  • Cannot contain consecutive digits

✅ Allowed:

  • 1, 3, 5, 7, 9
  • 2, 4, 6, 8
  • 1, 4, 7, 9

❌ Not allowed:

  • 3 and 4 (consecutive)
  • 6 and 7 (consecutive)
  • 5 and 5 (repeat)

Long Nabner Lines are especially powerful: a 5-cell Nabner Line must contain exactly: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9

🇳🇱 Dutch Flatmates

A simple rule with surprising depth!

Rule:

Every 5 in the grid must have:

  • A 1 directly above it, or
  • A 9 directly below it,
  • or both.

Interesting deductions:

  • A 5 in the top row must have a 9 below it.
  • A 5 in the bottom row must have a 1 above it.

🟢 Chinese Whispers

A powerful line constraint inspired by German Whispers.

Rule:

Neighboring pairs of digits on the line differ by at most 2.

  • If allowed by the puzzle rules, adjacent digits on the line may be identical.

⭐ Which variant should we add next?
