Adding Footwell and Underbody Lighting to ND

I wanted a challenging (for me at least) project for my '23 RF GT and inspired by a post on Miata.net, I added: 1) footwell (driver's and passenger's side) lighting that follow the behavior of the DOOR setting of the dome/map light, and 2) underbody lighting that could either also follow the DOOR setting behavior or be manually turned on and dimmed to your desired level with a remote. Here are the results and me talking through at a pretty high level (i.e. not very detailed) what I did:

Underbody and Footwell Lighting on ND Miata

The footwell lighting was somewhat practical and somewhat aesthetic, and I guess the same is true of the underbody, though the original thought was increased visibility of my small car in the evening when driving among the giants.

I purposely used a warmer color temperature (3000K) IP67 (waterproof) LED strips, though you can buy pretty much any color temperature you want.

If there's interest, I can post more details on materials used and how I connected everything together.

While this is probably pretty transferable to other generations and even other cars, I can only really answer specifics (wire routing, tapping into dome light wires, etc) based on the ND.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

Has anyone tapped the dome light wires (12v power and switched ground) at the A-pillar?

I’m planning on adding DIY footwell lights and underbody lights and need to tap into the dome light controls (12v power and BCM switched ground) and the A-pillar seems the best location to tap into them.

Has anyone done this? If so, if you can please share:
a) the year and trim level of your car and what color these wires were for you
b) how many wires were there to choose from?
c) how easy or hard they were to access (were they all taped up, in a loom, etc)

I know the wires colors may not stay consistent, so part b) above is to determine just how many wires I might have to sample to find the right ones.

I know I can find the colors by accessing the back of the dome light fixture itself, but it’s not trivial to get there and I hate to disassemble or remove more trim than necessary. I did remove the dome light color towels to see if I might get a peek at the wires colors from inside the fixture, but no joy there.

RF Drain Cleaning

Tried a trombone cleaner and got it in about 12” and it wouldn’t go farther. Opened up the panel behind the seat and removed the black oval cover and found the pipe leading out. There’s a ribbed “flexible” black hose that mates with this, but I’d ideally like to detach this plastic piece from the metal wall and clean out whatever’s there and run the trombone cleaner downstream of this.

You can see there’s some leakage around this connection, so guessing there’s at least a partial blockage downstream from here.

My question: does this just pry off, or is there some correct detachment action to get it off?

70’s Diapolon

More figures that remain from my 70’s collection

The smaller figures came as a set of 4 and the bigger guy came with the blue guy and the weapons, if I recall correctly.

Just sharing pics of the few remaining pieces I have left.

70’s Alien Icarus (Hawaiian)

I got this guy back in the 70’s in Hawaii. I think he’s Alien Icarus. You may know better than me.

I sold a fair amount of what I had left several years ago, but this guy is still with me.

Gaudy colors! 😆

Shark Fin Delete

For those that did the delete, did you patch and paint, cover it with a badge, or something else?

I’m thinking a 58mm revlimiter badge, but don’t know how critical it is to patch the hole or whether the badge coverage is enough to prevent any water incursion.

So Mysterious!

How mysterious. . .I’m almost tempted, but most likely it’s not going to be something a middle aged dude is going to find interesting.

Has anyone installed a Dongar power adapter cable to their Homelink mirror?

I have a '23 RF GT and Dongar's fitment recommender told me to buy a DCA-10E cable, which I did.

I pulled the power cable out of the back of the mirror, expecting that the Dongar would plug into it and the power cable I pulled out would plug into the harness, but the Homelink mirror needs a Type A connector. So the adapter won't fit.

Has anyone done this install? The one thing I can think of is there's a Type E port under the plastic shroud that's attached to the windshield to the right of the mirror - there's reference to that being the case on the CX-5, but I've seen no verification that there's also one on a ND2 GT.

Hoping to get confirmation before I start prying covers off shrouds, as I'm not mechanically gifted and have been known to break things unintentionally.

In the pic below, the Dongar harness is on the left, the ND2 power cable on the right.

Do You Have a Custom License Plate on Your Miata?

Miata owners are pretty passionate about their cars. Wondering how many of us have custom plates.

If comfortable, feel free to share details or explanation if it’s not obvious what it means. People may of course be concerned with privacy issues, so this is only if you’d like to.

The Used to But No Longer mostly is for people who’ve had multiple Miatas and may have had one on a previous Miata, but chose not to on their current one.

PPF Standards (ND2)

I’ve never PPF’d a car before, so unsure what the standard is for imperfections.

Two examples (both on front bumper area):

- 1st pic: film is lifted and doesn’t adhere on curved surface

- 2nd pic: the area inside the blue area is lacking film - if you look closely, you should be able to see it.

I’m going in for my 3 week fix-it visit (correct any remaining install issues). Are these issues too picky and fall within the “expect reasonable imperfections in more hidden areas”, or are these below standard for a 5-star rated shop?

Our front door is fiberglass with textured wood grain finish that’s been gel stained (Old Masters) and clear coated with Modern Masters MasterClear Supreme. Unsure how many coats were applied initially.

The painter said to ping him every year to apply a fresh coat. It’s been 18 months or so, so thinking about applying a new coat proactively - no signs of dulling on door now.

Door faces East, 2ft overhang, so not a lot of protection.

The original painter is MIA, hasn’t answered my texts, so I was thinking of doing this myself.

Questions:

- is this just a matter of cleaning the door, very light scuffing with fine sandpaper, and then brush applying the clear coat?

- how many coats would you apply? 2-3 and then not worry about it for a couple/few years, or just 1 and do it every year?

Thanks. This is new to me. Don’t want to leave obvious brushstrokes or ruin the wood grain effect, so hoping to avoid pitfalls by asking the group here.

If it matters, the door brand is Mastergrain out of Canada. Their wood grain effect is quite good and more realistic than the ones we saw from Therma Tru and other local option.
