1st Sub Constructive Criticism

Let me start by saying, I love this company. Their SEs have been phenomenal, amazing art direction, and Kissed by the Gods is one of the most beautiful dust jackets I have ever seen (and the reason why I paid double for it on resale 😂). I feel like their books have this curated quality where they all compliment each other while being vastly different from their trad versions.

However, when I got my first sub box, I had one big thought: this looks familiar.

Let me say, I love the endpapers, sprayed edge, and board foils. And the dust jacket would have blown me away, if it was the first time I’d seen it.

But I had just gotten my Riftwar Saga set from the Broken Binding a month before and if you would’ve told me Clockwork Angel was the fourth book in Riftwar Saga I would’ve believed you. I love Jeff Brown, his artwork is iconic, but I can’t get over how similar the covers are. Even the viewer perspective that takes the eye from bottom left to top right is exactly the same. The typography is also so similar, from the style, foiling color, and position.

I loved the Riftwar set so much, the artwork is the reason I sought out that edition so hard. So it’s not that I dislike the artwork and design. I just hope moving forward, Bewitched becomes their own thing and realizes that customers may also be TBB customers and to try to diversify their art direction on the subs like we’ve seen with their SEs.

NetGalley newbie

I’ve been on NG for 2 months. Does anyone have any tips for getting approvals? My rating is 100% (3 approvals thus far). Does your bio matter a ton or are there certain times it is better to request?

Any tips would be appreciated greatly!!

Laminate Covers

I am a novice bookbinder and trying to add more soft touch laminate designs to my portfolio. Can anyone offer advice on how to work with HTV for spines and covers with laminate? I feel like my temp setting is either too low that the vinyl won’t stick or it’s too high that it distorts the soft touch laminate underneath it.

Or do people use something else all together? Thanks for any help!

Lacking deep colors

I am a novice bookbinder and I’m trying to get my printer to print deeper colors that look rich and not faded. I don’t know if it’s my settings or my material but everything seems to come out a bit dull. I match the setting to what material I’m using and set it to high but I’m mostly having issues with canvas, matte photo paper, and cardstock. I feel like it does ok when I have it set to the ProPlatinum.

I currently have the Pixma Pro 200S. Would a glossy paper work better? Or do I just need to upgrade to achieve a richer quality print?

Farseer Overstock

Does Illumicrate ever do overstock sales? I missed the Farseer preorder and am wondering if I should shop around (and subsequently overspend) on a secondhand set or wait to see if they have overstock…

Illumicrate Customer Service

Do people have any luck with Illumicrate responding to inquiries? I am not a subscriber but have sent a couple tickets in with questions as well as tried through Instagram messages and have never received a response. Just curious if this is standard or I’ve just gotten unlucky with them?

No spine covering??

Bought Bewitched Pages Kissed by the Gods and there’s no cloth spine covering on the glued edges. Checked my sub book from them and it is present covering the glue. Was mine a rogue copy or did everyone else have this issue? Concerned for the longevity of the book…

Goldsboro or TBB??

Help a girl out…

I currently have the TBB SFF sub and am thinking of switching to the Goldsboro Fellowship sub. Price is the same but Goldsboro offers less skips.

However, Goldsboro tells you the monthly selections upfront and honestly, I haven’t been wowed by the TBB SFF sub selections or artwork(however they give you 8 yearly skips).

Thoughts on Goldsboro?

Soft touch laminate

Does anyone have a reliable brand of soft touch they recommend? I feel like mine is not adhering properly.

Also, what do you use for lettering on top? I have tried permanent vinyl and heat transfer vinyl…anyone have a preference to those or something different they use?

Thank you in advance!

God Save the Alchemy

I’ve just recently finished Book 8 and seeing how close the group has rallied for one another I will be so disappointed if BB makes anyone in the Alchemy a secondary love interest. It seems so out of character for Islington or Hawkes to betray the loyalty they’ve so reverently show one another and Pierce.

If she feels the need to introduce another love interest, I hope it’s an outside character or someone yet to be met. For me, it just doesn’t align with the characters at this point to be fighting over Emma.

I also think that we’re so conditioned to have these highly dramatized stories/multiple love interests but maybe it’s just me, this series has never felt like that type of story to me. While Emma has talked about the attractiveness of Islington and Hawkes she’s never romanticized her relationship with them (at least to me). Maybe I’m just a Pierce loyalist but I hope Emma is there to help him grow and learn he is not alone. I’ll be quite upset if the narrative gets messy fighting over a girl.

Book quotes needed!!

I’m doing a rebind of the book series and putting quotes on the back, but so far I’ve only read The Deal. What are your most favorite/iconic quotes from The Mistake, The Score, The Goal, and The Legacy??

Shipping costs

Can someone who works in postal/shipping or in the UK book space explain why UK sellers, specifically Blackwell’s, can provide free shipping to the US but other stores/specialty book subs based in the UK charge crazy amounts to ship?

Is it simply a money making opportunity or am I missing something here from a distribution aspect?
