Teach to read resources

My daughter is 4 yo and will need to do monthly infusions at the hospital (about 4 hours). Among other activities, I was thinking we can work on reading. We read a lot and she’s expressed interest and knows the sounds of the letter.

Does any one know of starting to read resources or activity books? We’ve tried sounding out words in books every once and awhile, but tbh English doesn’t always make sense haha.

Help - Bday party at a park

I’m about to send out the invitations for my daughter‘s fourth birthday. Since I started the planning late, we chose to have it at a local park with a spray park.

Now I need to actually plan the party. This will be the first kids birthday I’ve ever planned so I’m not sure what I’m missing. I didn’t plan to bring any toys or activities and figured the kids could just run around. Is that completely unreasonable?

Is there anything else I’m missing from the below?
- cooler for drinks
- pizza for lunch plus snacks
- cake
- decorations (minimal)
- small party favour

I also welcome any tips!!

Where TF is my energy??

I’m nearly 37 years with two kids, 2 and 4. I work nearly full time in a semi-new position that is entirely out of my comfort zone. It’s in consulting but I’ve been in consulting for awhile.

I’m exhausted! I’m suppose to be out of the “trenches” but I never really recovered since I went back to work and my kids started (mostly) sleeping through the night. I have zero energy, I’m moody, no motivation at home or at work, constantly feeling anxious, can’t relax, trouble sleeping. (Yes, I realize this sounds like depression but it feels different). Beyond chasing young kids, I don’t exercise as I struggle to find the time.

I’ve always had periods being in a funk throughout my life but I can’t seem to get out of this one. I know therapy is great but tbh, I hate talk therapy (I don’t have issues talking about my problems). I started taking magnesium (no change) and now moved onto iron. Trying to work up the energy to go to the doctor and get bloodwork next and discuss other route causes (stress).

Has anyone gone through this and come out the other side? What helped? More time to yourself? Is it literally just therapy and medication?

(I feel like this is more of a vent but I like to see others experiences to help me figure out what questions I need to ask myself/medical professionals)

Added compost to soil - mixtake?

I’m in the PNW. I know the sentiment for native plants is compost is not needed and native plants are resilient. But I have fairly poor soil and was given a bag of free compost from my City (all yard waste compost). I’m not able to let leaves sit on the garden bed and build the organic content of the soil naturally due to where the garden is.

Anyways I was planning on mixing a bit of compost with the native soil while I was transplanting some potted plants. But wasn’t thinking and mixed it with a new bag of potting soil (let’s say 50/50 potting soil to compost) So basically I over dug the area and then backfilled it with the compost/potting soil mixture. It only occurred to me this morning that I didn’t follow my original plan.

Am I about to fry my newly transplanted plants? Or will it likely depend on the type of plant? I think the plants that got the most of it were coastal strawberry, trailing blackberry, and a columbine.

CMPI to VEO IBD

Anyone’s baby end up getting a diagnosis of IBD in the end?

Daughter had suspected CMPI to dairy, soy, egg but we always would randomly get blood sometimes so I assumed I messed up or there was another food. Anyways daughter is now 4 and just received a diagnosis of VEO IBD, well after we “grew out it”. Doubt it’s common to go this route, just seeing if anyone else had this happen.

VEO IBD - what to expect?

We’re on the road to a diagnosis of VEO IBD following my 4 year old’s colonoscopy. So we’re being looked after medically and symptoms are generally mild (loose stools with blood). And we’ll be giving her sulfasalazine.

I know Crohn’s is different for everyone but I will have a follow up appointment soon and looking to wrap my head around what this diagnosis will mean in the short-term and long-term. For example, should I expect to be trying different medications? I know there will be lots of tests in the future but it’s hard for me understand the types of ups and downs I might encounter with my daughter.

I’m hoping to also put together a list of questions for the doctor since I tend to be a slow processor and just nod along. So this type of information helps me figure it all out until we get more direction.

5 yo needs to fast - tips?

My 5 year old has a colonoscopy in a couple weeks. Any tips for the actual prep/fasting day (24+ hours) and day of the procedure. I’m not looking for medical advice, just how to make the day less awful. Sounds like the prep starts early in the day so not sure how much we can be out and about.

So far we haven’t really explained anything to him, just that we’ll be having a doctor’s appointment soon.

I have a 2 and 4 year old and work in environmental consulting, both as a technical person and middle manager. Both areas of my life (work and family) are at a time that they’re very demanding and I’m struggling to keep up. Basically my mental/physical health and personal relationships (husband, friends) are the area I have no gas left for.

I’m at one of those consulting firms that demand continuous growth and given the job market are more likely to get rid of low performers rather than give some grace. I’m doing well at my job (recent promotion to manager), but I’d like to stagnant for a bit to help distribute my finite energy better in my life.

Is anyone finding good ways to save their energy for home life with a demanding job?

I’m feeling pretty unambitious these days (years) but fully understand the importance of continuing to evolve/growth in my career in the long term. I just want to find ways to slow down a bit.

Just coming here to commiserate and vent. I am in a townhouse and have landscapers outside of my control. I started a native plant garden near a public facing street, so I accept all the risk that comes with that. The bed is very clearly defined though.

Last year the landscapers cut back the majority of my planted natives saying they were weeds. I spoke with them, put out signs, etc. This year most of the plants that were weed whacked came back and the garden was finally starting to look nice and full. And I added in some newly purchased plants last weekend.

Well yesterday while I was at work, landscapers did it again. Yes, it’s my fault for not being proactive and putting in new signs earlier in the spring. But boy, am I demoralized. Everything is just cut down to dirt. Time to rebuild 💸💸💸
