Couples in Game Changers by Rachel Ried had the same foundation (in a bad way) ?
OK first, no hate to the series. I genuinely enjoyed reading the books. They were fun reads with great romance.
But as I continued through the series, I started to realise they were all just same idea in different fonts? And the only couple that slightly went off script was Troy and Harris. And of course sequels like "The Long Game" don't count because the couple is already established.
So basically the whole foundation of the romance is:
Hockey player meets normal dude (or another hockey player) . Hockey player can't come out cause the League is homophobic. They have sex with no strings attached. They keep having sex but eventually start liking each other. And they go back and forth with the sex before confessing to each other.
And like I said, Troy and Harris are a bit different 'cause there is a mutual emotional attraction between them before they go to town.
And I know I sound like a backward, conventional whatever whatever it is. But I wish more of them had romance and emotion or atleast something other than sexual attraction before the smut. I know the main point of sex is physical attraction. But in Game Changers, it all starts as a strictly sexual encounter.
I'll break it down what happened in each book, that I've read, before the guys start to boing boing
Game Changer : They just find each other hot
Heated Rivalry : They find each other hot and want to hookup without the risk of being outed
Tough Guy : There is SOME emotion involved cus they had crushes on each other in high school. But Fabian is helping Ryan to explore gay sex. No strings attached.
Common Goal : Kyle is helping Eric to explore gay sex. No strings attached.
Role Model : Mutual emotional attraction before smut begins
Do yall see a pattern? Or am I trippin'? 'Cause I feel like the book was too eager to do the deed. I know it's a trope or whatever but does every book has to be like that? (Except Role Model ofc) I would love to read more mlm books from Rachel Ried, with different dynamics. She's genuinely good at writing romance.
I guess I just don't find the uncertain period of "just sex" appealing... Maybe it's a culture thing? (I'm Asian)
Also, pls don't hate me for this but, I feel like the books are trying to highlight smut because people like to read smut. Idk how to explain it. Like they know people would buy it if there was smut involved so they take every possible opportunity to include a smut scene? Or am I the problem? But not in a way that ruins the story tho (thank god)
Again, no hate because I loved the books. (Can't wait for Unrivaled to come outtttt.)
