Season 1 is the reason why Season 2 and 3 are so good.

Just wanted to leave this here. I think sometimes we forget - when we rate Season 1 the lowest - that it had the more thankless task of having to create and introduce everything. The world, the characters etc.

In hindsight some episodes might feel less exciting but I think almost all of them contributed to making ATLA feel as alive as it does. The more episodic nature of Season 1 suited this goal very well. We can't have too much epic stuff going on here yet, because we need to ease into the story and the characters. If you do that too early, the payoff doesnt feel as good. (see most other TV shows that rush into spectacle almost instantly).

Season 2 can be as good as it is, because Season 1 is the way it is. Because it can now use those characters and this world that Season 1 built and start telling a tighter story with it. Season 2 is kind of the payoff for Season 1s work. And I think thats why it works so exceptionally well.

I wouldnt change much about Season 1, except maybe swap two or three episodes out for something more meaningful, but apart from that, I think as a pilot season, its really really good.

It walked, so the other 2 seasons could run.

AITAH for not wanting to cancel a summer trip because a close friend cant make it due to health reasons?

Okay some establishing facts. This is about me and my two friends, A and B. Both my best friends. A lives in Germany like I do, B lives in the UK. We lived there together for a while.

Since I have been back in Germany I chose a more artistic livestyle, which affords me more time for art, but less money since I don't work as many hours. And the hours I do work are all over the place, because its in service. However its worth it, because I struggle making friends and I have some lovely colleagues my age and finally feel like I am somewhat arriving. I still dont have any close friends despite A and B though.

Now, since its so hard to get all of us to each others birthday parties and I knew B was sad, that I couldnt come to the UK for financial reasons, I came up with an alternative some months ago. B is very integrated into my german family, she especially loves my dad and has expressed that shed love to see them this year. So I suggested, why not do a little celebration at my parents and since my dad owns way too many tents...a little summer camping trip by a lake.

To be honest, I had been wishing to have close enough friends to invite to something like this for a while and after some scheduling and planning, I managed to get the time off, my dad booked a camping place and I was really excited. And I could tell he was happy I asked him along, we live on different ends of the country and dont get so much time together.

Now B has developed a health issue with her foot which is very scary for her and as long as its undiagnosed, she cant fly because she wont be able to get insurance. I understand it really sucks...and I was sad that I might not get to see her. Now A approached me and said she was feeling guilty about doing the trip without B (which I get) and asked if maybe we couldnt do something else, fly to London maybe. But my financial situation hasnt changed. I can manage really well but thats because I am mindful about my money. And tbh Id feel awful towards my dad. Plus, I do wanna see him.

B then also texted me, saying we needed to talk about the trip, saying that she felt left out for something that is out of her control. She said it was meant to celebate our birthdays together and that she would like to talk about what to do if she cant come.

I replied that I didnt really want to cancel on my dad and that maybe Ill go with just him. Because A had already hinted towards maybe making plans with each of us individually but not coming along to the trip because she felt guilty. I think B is mad at me now...but I am also sad, I was really looking forward to finally have a friend along. Something about this makes me feel lonely, but then again, maybe I am the asshole here, I dont know.

Just say what you like and want

Guys...of you are wondering right now...should I text this, or that...just do it. You might get an answer. No answer is also an answer.

A lot of people here are incredibly quick to say "leave it be, this person isnt interested" and I wonder about all the Magic 8 balls left in world that give all of them such superior knowledge about people they dont know.

If you date someone, even a little bit, you know them better than most people on reddit. If theres something on your mind, just talk to them. Just say what you would like. Say "Id like to see you again" even if they havent initiated for a few days.

Stop playing all these games. At the point where an unanswered text bothers you so much you go on reddit to ask for advice, playing it cool and pretending you arent as "needy" as you are...thats also playing games. At this point you tell the other person youd like to see them again, if they would also like that.

And if they dont answer that, then you have your answer. Before, youre just guessing. Sure, dont send them a text every week if they answer none of them, but one or two short follow ups after a good date...I dont think thats pathetic at all. Its just communicating what you feel and what you would like. If a person doesnt respond well to that, its not a match. And thats okay.

Coming of age feel books but for your 30s

I feel like the title says it all, but Id particularily love it if the books had a focus on finding joy and lightness, if they exude that teenage summer feeling. A lot of books about peoples 30s tend to be melancholic and heavier, Id like something thats almost rebellious in that its choosing to focus on optimism, while not ignoring that heavy shit does happen and that life isnt always easy.

Bonus points for narratives that are about the joy of new beginnings. Any genre goes!

Potentially unpopular opinion about Rory "cheating" with Dean

I think its quite telling how much fault people put on Rory in the whole "cheating on Lindsay" - situation.

But I dont think she has much fault at all. Dean basically lied to her, he made her think the relationship was over, agreed on both sides, him and Lindsay. He made it sound like it was just a matter of putting a signature on divorce papers and that him and Lindsay were aligned in this.

And Rory was a teenage girl with crazy feelings, circumstances that unsettled her and little life experience. Imagine yourself in her shoes with the kind of brain she had as a teenager. I can find little fault with her. Even her saying he was "her dean", I can easily say it as something she would say out of shock.

I agree with Lorelais telling off but in my opinion, its really Dean who is at fault here, he knowingly mislead her and lied to her. Id say Rorys responsibility in this is like 20 percent and I find it so telling (in terms of peoples views on women) how much fault people find with her and how much they judge her for this mistake.

I think wed do good to remember Deans behavior here and also...how dumb we all were at Rorys age
