Reworking the fog of war in Wars of Empire

I recently revisited the fog of war in Wars of Empire to improve map readability and early-game exploration.

The older version felt more restrictive and visually cramped, while the updated version gives a cleaner reveal around the player and makes the surrounding terrain easier to read without removing the sense of uncertainty.

The goal was to keep exploration meaningful while making the world feel more readable and less boxed in.

Sharing a before and after comparison here.

I wanted the marketplace in my RTS to feel like an actual market, not just another building

I’ve been working on the marketplace for Wars of Empire.

Instead of treating it as a single isolated building, I wanted it to feel like a small trading district that grows around a central structure, with stalls, awnings, goods, barrels, and different merchants filling the surrounding space.

The goal is to make important economic buildings visually communicate what they actually do, even when you’re looking at the city from a distance.

This is the current version.

Does this read clearly as a marketplace at RTS scale, or does the surrounding detail feel too busy?

Wars of Empire is currently in development and available to wishlist on Steam!

Same building, different civilizations. How do these mills read?

I’ve been working on civilization-specific versions of the same economic buildings for Wars of Empire.

These are the current mill variations. The goal is to keep the building instantly recognizable as a mill, while still giving each civilization its own architectural identity and silhouette.

I’m trying to find the right balance between:

  • consistent gameplay readability
  • distinct civilization style
  • enough variation without making them feel like completely different building types

Would love to hear which ones feel the strongest, and whether any of them still look too similar to each other.
