Flying from LONDON HEATHROW to JFK NY in September - Taxes, fees and charges?

Hi all!

I am visiting NY from the UK in September, and have booked to fly with BA after having a good experience with them visiting the US a couple of years ago. The "total" on my receipt comes to £737.00, "(incl. taxes, fees and charges)". Slightly lower down on the receipt is a section called "Taxes, fees and charges" which comes to £492.99.

Possibly very stupid question - does that mean the actual flights only came to £244.01, and all of these taxes etc. are paid? Or are these costs extra, and taken at a later date? I understand the "total" on the receipt says "incl. taxes, fees and charges" but I find it hard to believe that the cost of the flights would be so low, and the taxes/fees/charges such a huge portion of the total cost.

But then, I am not a hugely experienced traveller, and am a bit of an idiot.

Thanks!

Peter Hook & The Light US Tour - Meet-up/Social Thread

With Hooky's US tour coming up shortly, I thought I'd make a thread here (and over in r/neworder also) to help people organise meet-ups/socials around the shows, should they want to. I'll be attending the Brooklyn NY gig - travelling over from the UK to see Hooky with a US crowd, which will be great fun. Who else is going to the tour?

31 [M4A] Visiting #NYC from England in September and looking for a buddy!

Hi all,

British guy visiting NYC for the first time in September and looking for buddies! Travelling solo and always love meeting locals or fellow travellers when I visit somewhere new. I’ll be staying in Hell’s Kitchen and am really excited to finally experience the city properly after wanting to visit for years.

I’ll definitely be doing plenty of the usual touristy stuff; exploring different neighbourhoods, seeing the sights, and hopefully catching some live music and gigs while I’m there. But honestly, the thing I enjoy most about travelling is meeting interesting people and making genuine connections along the way.

I’m someone who loves hearing about people’s passions and interests. Whatever you're into, I’ll probably want to hear all about it. I’m naturally curious and love good conversation while discovering hidden gems locals actually recommend.

A little about me: I’m really passionate about films and music, love reading and travelling, and I love tattoos. Most of my tattoos are inspired by films, TV and bands/artists I love. Here in England, I currently live in Bristol but originally come from Shropshire, which is one of the places said to have inspired the Shire in Lord of the Rings.

If you’d like to chat and see if we vibe, send me a DM and tell me something fun or unusual about yourself! I’ll be in NYC for about a week in early September and would genuinely love to meet some cool people while I’m there.

Putting NSFW because you never know what could happen, but this isn't a requirement!

UK solo male traveller to NY, September 2026

I'm planning a trip to NY from England this September for a variety of reasons - to visit a friend, for some research on a writing project, and also as good old-fashioned tourism (seeing all the usual sights, particularly film/TV history).

My questions are basically:

  1. Is now a "safe" time to visit?

  2. Where should I look at staying in NYC in terms of affordability and being well connected? I'll want to do all the highlights of NYC. My friend lives further out in NY state so that would be a separate question, staying somewhere local to them for a couple days.

  3. Any places or things I should avoid?

  4. Any other random advice?

Sorry this is vague, but if I get even one small piece of valuable advice or insight from this post then it was worth it!

Thank you.
