Xfinity Mobile Scam?
My parents recently switched their cell service to Xfinity Mobile, but the whole process has felt extremely odd and I’m trying to figure out if this could be a scam.
They were working with a guy who said his name was “Michael,” claimed to be from Xfinity/Comcast, and sounded like he was using some kind of voice changer or prerecorded voice system. He was offering massive discounts, free/discounted Apple Watches and iPads, etc.
Some red flags:
- He was calling my parents directly for days instead of them calling Xfinity. He would call them when he said he would.
- One call lasted several hours early on
- He was calling at weird hours (like 4 AM his local time according to him). ((This could just be his shift, he said he’s in Egypt))
- He asked for PIN numbers, IMEI numbers, account details, transfer info, etc.
- The whole thing felt very informal and gave off heavy social engineering vibes.
Yesterday I was about to transfer my own line over too, but I got uncomfortable and asked him if I could just call Comcast/Xfinity Mobile directly instead. He really didn’t want me to do that.
Even stranger: when he supposedly “disconnected” from the merged call, I could still hear my parents talking in the background.
I then spoke to an AT&T rep who immediately said the situation sounded suspicious, so we stopped everything there.
The number he was calling from was 888-266-2278, though I know numbers can be spoofed.
My main question is:
Could this still be a scam even if my parents’ lines actually were transferred over successfully? My instinct is to call Xfinity Mobile directly myself tomorrow and verify/reset everything through official channels.
Would appreciate any thoughts or advice from people familiar with Xfinity Mobile scams or port-out fraud.
