Tracing your American ancestry

Have any of you tried tracing your ancestry? Getting back to 1870 (the first time enslaved people of color were included on the U.S. Census isn't too difficult. In my own family line I've been able to trace back to the early 1800, and in one case late 1700.

Once you get to the 1850 it can be tough to read though some of the wills and probates of enslavers, but if you calculate the dates, and ages of the people listed there, and on the U.S. Slave Schedules, in some cases you can figure out who is whom of the, especially if they lived till the 1870 census.

I highly recommend doing it. There were a lot of surprises in my own tree, included 1 of my ancestors fought in the Civil War, 10 in WW1, 7 in WW2, and 2 in the Korean War.

It's been an interesting journey. I'm 1.1k people in, and still going.

You can use Ancestry.com or familysearch.org, which is 100% free. Ancestry lets you create a tree, search, and add any public records. They charge for using their advance search, and the ability to add photos, and other media to your people. Anyway, not an ad for them, I've just found this journey very rewarding, and I think it's changing how I approach my relationship to this country.

I know that i have very deep roots here. I know my family made lots of sacrifices for this country, and during a time where they weren't even treated as equal.

Pro-tip:

1)Start with adding the 1870 - 1950 census first

  1. Then add the birth and death records where applicable

  2. add the marriage licenses

then go from there. It will save you a ton of backtracking and cleanup later on. Feel free to hit me up in DM if you have questions.

Silenced in BlackPeopleReddit by Mod: Conclusion

I want to share the conclusion of what happened when I shared an article on BPR's subreddit criticizing Kamala Harris's speech de-prioritizing the effort to restore the Voting Rights Act, but I want to use this opportunity to discuss how to deal with Black Liberals.

After accusing me of being a Conservative op, I guess now the accusation is I'm "trying to encourage people to abstain from voting if the only option isn't a Progressive."

Of course this is not a stance I have ever encourage.

In the Mod's opinion "this is just as bad as shilling for Republicans." As a leftist I would argue, continuing to support Democrats-backed by wealthy donors is just as bad as voting Republicans.

As an example, we all understand Elon Musk is using his wealth to buy our Democracy. What some people don't know, is during the Obama Administration, Tsla was given a 465 million dollar loan that bailed TSLA out, and the company went public shortly after, and that really started the trajectory to his obscene wealth; and yes, he continues to receive government contracts under subsequent administrations.

Government investigative source

The mod's argument that my rhetoric is problematic during the midterms (during a primary) is nonsensical. I'm suppose to compare DSA, to Liberal platforms that's just running against Trump?

I don't bother criticizing Republicans because they're a lost cause, and I don't caucus with them.

The mod concluded with I just think Biden, Harris, and Obama are bad, and honestly, yes; I do think their policies sucked. i don't think Obama should've bailed out the banks, and Biden/Harris's foreign policy sucked (to say the least). I should not have to criticize Republicans every time I have a criticism for a Democrat. There are plenty of Democrats I support, just not the NeoLiberal ones because NeoLiberal policies hurt working class people. One more example:

The national median household income flatlines during the Obama years

It's difficult to not feel like people that share that mod's perspective are part of the problem. We will never progress continuing to glaze politicians just because of their celebrity appeal. I get that Obama and his family are beautiful, charming, and very intelligent people. I also get that his policies are not in my best interest, and I need to push for more Mandani-type.

Question: During this attempt to take over the Democratic Party, should we be just as hostile towards Liberals? I don't mean personal attacks of course, I mean politically.

Zohran Mamdani, "We’re not running away from the Democratic Party. We’re going back to what the party used to be. You think about FDR and LaGuardia. You think about the New Deal. That’s what the Democratic Party once was. That’s what it could be again."

Update: Silenced in BlackPeopleReddit by Mod

Original Rant Part 1

First, I apologize in advance for my rant. I'm not about drama, or starting anything. I think this speaks to a larger issue where people's opinions should be respected, even if you disagree with it;especially if they respectfully disagreed.

A little while ago another mod shared their reasoning for shutting down the discussion (screenshot above).

This is so unbelievably disingenuous.

The article I shared comes from the publication democracydocket.com

Democracy Docket is owned by, A Democratic Party Lawyer. His law firm specifically focuses on voting rights, and election integrity.

Here is a link to his YouTube channel where he has an hour long conversation with Hilary Clinton a month ago.

The guy is basically normie Democrat, who very likely supports corporate Democrats like Hilary Clinton and Kamala Harris.

But instead of the mods just being honest that they disagree with my stance, they're tripping over themselves making up untruths above me. The guy that owns the publication literally works on voting rights for a living. Kamala Harris made a comment about VRA not being a priority right now. So, I would imagine, he would publish an article about her comments since that's his passion and field of work, and he's a lawyer for the Democratic Party.

The way the mods handled this is truly disgusting. I would never gaslight someone, just because I can't handle legit criticism about a political candidate I support.

Silenced in BlackPeopleReddit by Mod

Earlier today I posted an article where Kamala Harris suggested fighting to restore the Voting Rights Act should not be the priority right now.

Anyone familiar with that sub knows people will come for you for criticizing Kamala Harris, or Barack Obama, even when if its in good faith.

Here is the article i shared

https://www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/kamala-harris-tells-urban-league-the-voting-rights-act-wont-be-revived-any-time-soon/

Even though i offered no commentary when i first posted, and i left no comments for the first hour i was accused of being everything from a bot, to a Republican op. That’s normal stuff though.

What bothers me is the thread was shitdown and here is the mod’s reasoning (pictured above)

Since I can’t respond there I will here.

Why did i post the article?

Because Black people lost their voting rights legislation, and a person who may run for president is deprioritizing getting that legislation back.

It was also asked why is it ok to have an article claiming black voting rights aren’t a priority?

I don’t know. Why is it ok for Kamala Harris to suggest it’s not a priority? The article has quotes from her.

Then the mod says the article feels like fingering waving at the Black community for wanting more.

I don’t even understand what this means. Everyone debating me in the comments agreed with deprioritizing their voting rights. Then the mod says without Voting Rights, Jim Crow, and Balco Codes would find their way back.

This is generally my point. Kamala Harris wants to deprioritize the effort to re-establish the VRA. So, why would the mod silence that discussion?

It seems like I’m being punished for not supporting a corporate Democrat.

If blind support for Kamala Harris and/or Barack Obama is a requirement for political postings in that sub, they should just add that to the rules

Reparations

Morning fam,

I am building my family tree and was able to trace back to the early and mid 1700s which I was really surprised by. Some ancestors were enslaved people, but quite a few seem to have managed as free people, and even some obtained a little land.

My question: if we have Federal Slave Schedules, Federal Slave Owner Petitions, and Slave Emancipation Records that list the enslaver and the enslaved person where they lived, dates, and location, why has the argument for reparations been so difficult?

I’m not talking about the ignorant immediate dismissive responses from some white folk, Black people, (and I probably should include bots that will lit this post up).

Obviously the aforementioned records are not comprehensive, but it’s not nothing. What are you guys thoughts?

Family Tree

Morning folks, I’ve been debating asking this for a few days because I don’t want to invade anyone’s privacy.

I’m working on piecing together my family tree.

I’m a Propst/Ramseur/Wilfong descendant. Yes, I’m aware that’s not saying much. These families have been in Catawba since its founding in 1842.

I’ve traced my linage back to the mid 1800s on my own, but there are some holes I’m trying to fill. If you’re possible kin, and don’t mind helping me out a bit please DM me.

I know there’s a genealogy section at the local library that’s pretty extensive, but I’m in Virginia at the moment.

Anyway, thanks in advance, and wishing you folks a great day.

Platitude Pete

I’m always amazed at his ability to use a lot of words to basically say nothing.

Also, him speaking positively about this SCOTUS ruling provide cover and legitimacy for a corrupt, and partisan court that just stripped Black people’s voting rights away two months ago.

This is why some leftists despise corporate Democrats.

I argue that most Democrats in federal office provide cover and continue to prop up White Supremacy, and a vote for them isn’t a harm reduction vote, it just delays the inevitable.

This screenshot comes directly from his official YT channel.

Nebraska’s Independent Congressional Candidate on His Viral Campaign Video

This is the kind of candidate that would be willing to bend on my politics as a leftist to support. Very far from perfect, but can be moved on some sticky issues.
