GWR RoadsterSport Race Muffler Vs. MBRP 2.5" Race Muffler

Parked next to a fellow driver at an autocross event this weekend, and we ended up doing a spontaneous sound comparison between our axle-back mufflers.

The car on the left is equipped with the Goodwin Racing muffler, while the car on the right has the MBRP muffler.

The video clip doesn't really do either car justice, but I do think the MBRP is a couple decibels louder and produces a deeper, richer, and more dynamic exhaust note. Everyone who listened in person agreed that the MBRP sounded the best.

Personally, I'd still choose the GWR muffler for the weight savings since I have an RF. It weighs only 12 pounds compared to the MBRP's 20 pounds. If shedding weight isn't a major concern, I highly recommend the MBRP for its excellent sound and lower price point.

ND rust proofing

I got some 3M cavity wax that I’m going to use on my new Miata. Any suggestions on particularly troublesome areas I should focus on?

Bittersweet Delivery

Just took delivery of my brand-new RF with sport package, and the first drive was a bit bittersweet.

Leaving the dealership, the steering, shifter, lightweight, and overall sense of connection were everything I'd hoped for. So imagine my surprise when I got it out on the highway and the car started pogoing over a section of rhythmic cracks in the asphalt. I was basically flashing the car ahead of me because the headlights were bouncing up and down so much. I could see myself getting a little nauseous on longer road trips from all the pogoing if I'm on a highway with seams like that one I was on.

I'd genuinely never experienced anything like it. Even my old '74 Triumph TR6 felt more compliant on the same stretch of road. My wife, on the other hand, found the whole thing hysterical and started comparing it to the much more stable ’16 Mini JCW she drives.

Looks like I'll be ordering Tecna coilovers sooner than planned!

Living in Alberta, we mostly have long straight highways. We don't exactly have many tight, twisty canyon roads where the Miata's stock setup probably makes a lot more sense.

Don't get me wrong! I'm still very happy with my choice to get this car. It's just a little bittersweet that my first drive home was spent discovering how much the stock suspension likes to pogo.

Car is off to a body shop to get full PPF wrap. Hopefully I’ll get it back in time for an autocross event on the 25^(th) so I can send it!

**UPDATE** There’s a good chance the shipping blocks are still in the suspension. I did notice during my drive last night that I felt the car was more flat than I was expecting. I was expecting way more body roll from what I read but was pleasantly surprised. Turns out it may have been the shipping blocks lol. Car is at a shop getting PPF installed, I’ll call them in the morning to see if they can check for me. Anything else that’s supposed to happen with dealer prep other than tire pressure and shipping blocks?

**UPDATE #2** Confirmed that there are no shipping blocks and air pressure is good. I think its just the perfect spacing at the perfect speed that makes the car do what it did. Once I get the car back I'll see if I can get a video of that section of highway just for anyone wanting to see what its like. Hopefully the dampers just need a bit of breaking-in. Thanks for all the suggestions

Street/Track Wheel and Tire Combo

I just bought a 2026 ND RF and I’m trying to decide between two tire and wheel combos:

17x8 Apex SM-8RS + 10mm spacer (Brembo brake clearance) with 215/45r17 RE71RZ tires

Or

17x9 Apex SM-8RS with 235/40r17 Vitour Tempesta P1 X-01R (or P-01R, depends on if I end up doing more track than autox)

Context:

- I decided on the ND Miata to specifically develop my skills using autocross events but also to transition into track. I got into autocross last year using a lightly modded TR6 and sold it for something more capable.

- I do plan on modding the car with Tecna Sport coilovers, offset knuckle bushings, and aero.

- I live in Canada and plan to store the car during winter.

- I will use the car around town, and some canyon runs when the weather is nice

- Long road trips I’ll probably put the stock 205/45’s back on but I’ll mostly be leaving the Apex wheels on around town or during local canyon runs.

- In the next 2-3 years I plan to get my dream car which is a Cayman gts or even a gt4. I almost pulled the trigger on a 981 Cayman S but decided that the Miata nd was a better platform to develop skills before getting a car like that for track so I don’t develop bad habits.

I’m leaning towards the 215’s on 8’s so I can keep some of the nimble characteristics and playfulness of the Miata but I am concerned I will be leaving a lot of time on the table and will end up getting another set of wheels in the future.

I’m hoping someone who run’s 235/40’s on 17x9’s can provide some insight on what’s it like to drive on the street compared to 17x8’s.

2014 Touareg TDI Oil cap smoke

Low oil light came on. No leaks. Engine has about 150k km. Seems like I'm burning a bit of oil since my last oil change 8 months ago. Does this seem like an excessive amount of smoke? Possible PCV failure or blowby?
