Mail Essentials vs. Family Plan

If you had 3 users and were to choose between the Mail Essentials plan vs. the Family Plan, which would you choose? This is for personal use, not business use. Also, let's ignore for the moment the fact that you can have up to 6 on family... that can be a separate consideration.

What I see are the benefits of family over mail essentials (again, ignoring the up to 6 user feature)

  • 3 TB of shared storage vs 45 GB of individual storage (15GB each)
  • Higher VPN tier (10 simultaneous connections per user, all of the high speed servers)

Benefits of mail essentials:

  • Marginally lower price for 3 users - but that goes when amortized over more users.
  • Better user management features? Probably very useful for an organization, but maybe not so vital for personal use? Anything I would be missing out on here do you think?
  • (This one is specific to me): I am already on Mal Essentials and switching my users is a royal pain.

Are there any other benefits of Mail Essentials over the Family Plan that I am missing? Just trying to make the final decision before taking the somewhat complicated step of switching.

Thanks!

Trying to calculate the "opportunity cost" of buying a vehicle - did I get the formula right?

I am looking for confirmation that my use of the FV function is correct in my spreadsheet.

I want to calculate (roughly) how much money buying a vehicle will cost me over the course of set number of years. I want this number to include any money that I lose by not otherwise investing this money in some sort of an investment account. I think this is called the "opportunity cost" but I am not 100% sure.

Assuming it is, as I figure it this cost should be:

  • Purchase price OR downpayment price minus any government rebates
  • Sales tax paid on this purchase price or downpayment
  • Monthly financing payments (if any)
  • Annual operating costs (registration, insurance, annual taxes, repairs, fuel). I would split these into 12 equal payments to simplify the calculations.
  • Any interest I forgo by not investing this money over that same set of time.
  • Minus the resale after the set number of years

I am using the FV function to do the calculation, splitting it into mutlitpe steps (one during the duration of the car loan, and one after the car loan has been paid off).

  1. I calculate the total cost DURING the car loan using this formula:
    1. FV(Investment_Rate_%/12, Loan_Duration_In_Months, -1*Monthly_Cost_Including_Loan_Paytments, -1*Initial_Cost)
  2. I then calculate the total cost AFTER the car load using this formula:
    1. FV(Investment_Rate_%/12, Life_Of_Car_In_Months-Loan_Duration_In_Months, -1*Monthly_Cost_Without_Loan_Paytments, -1*Value_Of_Above_FV_Calculation)
  3. (I don't add these numbers together because I think the second calculation is already taking into account the money in the first calculation)

The thing is, the final values I am getting seem big. But maybe that is just the magic of compound interest. In any event, if anyone has a moment to read through this and confirm the correctness or incorrectness of my work (or look at the link below) I would surely appreciate it.

How feasible is it to have unique cryptographic signatures on every phone to avoid AI fakes?

I hope this is an allowed post. If not, moderators please remove it. I have next to no knowledge of cryptography and its abilities and limitations.

I keep seeing questions on whether a photo or video is AI or not.

I am pretty sure it is possible to "sign" each image a camera takes with a private key such that if even a single pixel changes, the signature would no longer be valid. Then the public key could be embedded in the metadata of the image so that its veracity could be established.

The first question is whether the phone manufacturers could embed a unique private and public key in the hardware of each phone in such a way that they can be used by their official apps, but not leaked by them (the private key that is). I say official apps because I assume you don't want just any app to be able to sign an image. If you allowed that then someone could create a fake image and simply sign it.

The second question is whether Apple or other manufacturers would need to have a record of these private keys for any reason. If they did, and they were hacked, would that immediately render every image signed by their devices unverifiable?

The final question is does a scheme like this even make any sense? If not, or if there are better ways to somehow verify the provenance of a digital photo, would that also include some sort of a cryptographic signature?

Need a new front tire for my Bullitt.

I generally never think about the tires on my bikes. I just hop on and ride and whatever tire is on there... well it is what is on there. Well... I woke up to a flat on the front of my Bullitt this morning and now I AM thinking about tires I can tell you. I guess this is how we learn. So now I am looking for a new tire.

My biggest consideration (other than the fact that it is a first generation Bullitt, so there is less tire clearance) is that the bike is acoustic. So every joule of energy that the tires use up is one joule extra I need to pump out with my stupid noodle legs. So I am very interested in a lower rolling resistance tire. Schwalbe Motion Pick-ups are cargo specific tires, but are there others I should consider (any manufacturer)? Especially since I am focused on lowering rolling resistance?

My riding details: I will occasionally carry loads up to 150 - 180 pounds on top of my 220 pound weight, so that is pretty heavy, but not at the limit for the bike. I only ride city streets. We do get rain in the winter, but never snow or ice. Currently I tend to ride with the tires inflated to their full 65psi. I am located in the U.S. (Oakland, California area).

Thanks - from a newly interested tire enthusiast :)

Thoughts on Peaksta slim carry 2? Anything similar but smaller?

I'm looking for a very slim cross body sling bag for travel. Ideally it would just barely fit my iPhone 11 (which has a very slim case on it), some cash, credit cards, and a passport. I don't have a need to carry anything else in it (no earbuds/cases, tablets, ebooks, keys, glasses, etc.)

I'd like to wear it up high, over my t-shirt, but under another shirt. Almost like a holster under my shirt. I tend to wear short sleeved shirts (over a t-shirt) that are buttoned up only about 2/3 of the way, so I could still easily access this bag in this configuration.

If such a bag doesn't really exist, I would also consider one that is the same configuration, but could carry just my passport, credit cards, and some cash (no phone) - if that is an easier size to find.

So far I haven't found anything of that size. So... if neither of those are options, then my next option feels like some akin to the Peaksta slim carry 2 (or 3). In that case I would carry it like a standard cross body bag. Any thoughts on this bag for travel (or its quality)?

I am a 6' 3" male in case that affects things.

Thanks.

(2013 - Original Body Style in the U.S.) Driver's side window sometimes fails to work

I have been having this issue for a little while where every so often the driver's side window refuses to open or close. There is no sound like it is struggling. Just nothing happens when I hit the switch.

I posted about this before and people suggested that it might be the switch that is failing. But it was hard to verify because it always starts working again by the time I get back to it with any tools to start diagnosing.

Lately it is happening a lot more but I can generally get it to work again. Messing with the switch (repeatedly moving it up and down, or hitting it with some object) does nothing. But if I open the door and slam it, the window always starts working again. So I am thinking that it is probably not the switch (though I don't know much about cars so I am totally open to the possibility that it still is).

If it isn't the switch, any thoughts on what might be causing it? Should I just replace the window regulator? Or would it likely be something else?

Thanks. I am not a car person, but I am pretty handy generally so I feel confident I can fix it if pointed in the right direction.

Anyone tried Hoka hiking boots?

I have started wearing Hoka Clifton 10's and they are magic. I have been dealing with PF for about 8 months and all of the stretches and exercises have helped but not stopped the pain. But just a few weeks with my Hoka's and I am in much much less pain.

I just got back from a weekend where we did about 8 miles of hiking for two days (16 miles total). I am still pretty much pain free. So that is great.

What is not great is that my ankles needed more support when on uneven terrain and I could have used more tread when walking on steep, loose gravel.

So I was wondering whether anyone has tried the Hoka hiking boots (any of them). Are they as good for PF as their shoes? Or is it just a normal hiking boot that doesn't have any benefits (vis-a-vis PF) over other hiking boots?

having issues with my voicemail - says it is not "set up" sometimes

My mother is on my plan and her voicemail is getting frustrating.

First the custom message that was recorded by my late father years ago when we first signed up only gets used occasionally. Only about one in ten times leaving her a message do I get to hear his greeting. The rest of the time all we get is a generic greeting.

Now it has gotten worse. If my mother is on another call, all I get is a message saying that I can't leave a voicemail because the user hasn't set up their voice mailbox yet. But if I call and she isn't on the other line (but doesn't answer) I get to leave a voicemail (but usually just with the generic greeting though).

Anyone else having this issue?

Apple TV 4K. Buy now or wait?

I hope this isn't violating the sub's rules. I am not asking when it is coming out, but rather what I might be missing if I don't wait.

I currently have a chromestick from about a thousand years ago and it is:

  1. finally getting pretty laggy
  2. keeps dropping off the wireless network in mid-show
  3. is forcing me to use their stupid AI search engine

So maybe time to upgrade?

I don't game, and I don't give a shit about AI (or, rather, I do. I hate it. I just want basic search and the ability to watch my shows and that is all. I don't need apple AI or whatever they are calling it).

Given all of that, does it make sense to buy now? Or should I stick with my stupid chromestick for a little longer and wait for the updated Apple device whenever that may be released?

Yours truly,
Old man yelling at clouds.

Edit: Wow. So many replies. Can't say thanks to everyone (other than give you all an up-vote each), but I can thank you here. The general consensus is that I shouldn't wait, and I am inclined to take that advice. Thanks! I will look to see what is out there used/refurbished first to see what I can get. But it is time to dump the chromestick (and I am de-googling my life as it is, so this will fit right in). Thanks again!

Since upgrading, screentime is showing websites being active while I am asleep

https://preview.redd.it/2hrfq7bk6a7h1.png?width=828&format=png&auto=webp&s=086b7579503cb3d5cbac3543a379591cf07c7147

I have screentime enabled on my phone all the time (it starts at 5:00 am and ends at 4:59 am).

On previous versions of iOS it was perfectly fine. But the new version of iOS behaves differently. First off, every web domain is a different screen time exception (instead of me unlocking just duckduckgo for example, I have to unlock each and every website). I hate it, but whatever.

But the weirdest thing is that some nights my screen time report shows that my screen was on all night long on a single website - sometimes a website I was using, and sometimes ones that I have no recollection of visiting manually.

The other night, screen time was reporting that my phone was connected (with the screen on?) to a gardening website for 9 hours. (I don't recall ever visiting this site manually, but maybe it was an ad loaded on one of my sites?). Last night, it showed that website being active for two hours, starting at 6am. Other nights it had me on a blog that I had read that day, but for 5 hours starting at 2am.

But the phone is right next to my bed and I would know if the screen was on (it wasn't). And weirdly, sometimes I get a report that duckduckgo was active for 6 hours, and sometimes I just get a website that was active all night, and that duckduckgo (and pinterest - the only other app that shows me websites) was barely used. I know that webkit is a separate thing so maybe it was just doing something in the background?

At any rate, this is not only annoying (I try to keep my screentime under an hour each day and this is screwing with that metric), but also concerning. What the hell is going on on my phone when I am asleep? And why?

Non-flammable roofing that isn't loud during rain

https://preview.redd.it/8wki8c2oec4h1.png?width=1430&format=png&auto=webp&s=f2dfd2fac429155b5c08961cf993799e62e96a47

I have built a simple lean-to "shed" in my side yard for my bike.

Code (and prudence) says that I can't have anything that can burn that connects my house to the property line.

For today I have just stretched a tarp over the shed to test whether it properly shelters my bike from the (simulated) rain. But I want to put a permanent roof on it, and I have some corrugated metal that I can use. But it will be LOUD when it rains, and I don't want that either for me or for my neighbors.

Any ideas how I can keep it relatively quiet while still being non-flamable? I have some GAF Timberline asphalt shingles left over from another shed I built. They have a fairly high level of fire resistance, though I don't know if it is enough.

Any other thoughts on non-flamable ways to put a roof over the shed that isn't going to be super loud in the rain?

Thanks.
