Linkedin is a scam. 100% lost touch with what our clients are going through.

Reality is welcome here. Doom is not.

My lovely nerds...

We are not asking people to pretend the CS job market is fine. It isn't. We are also not asking people to sugarcoat difficult experiences.

What we are asking is that people separate what they know from what they observe, what they think it means, and what they predict.

"I've applied to 300 jobs and received 2 interviews." = Experience / Data

"Junior postings in my area commonly ask for experience." = Observation / Pattern

"I think AI is reducing entry-level opportunities." = Interpretation

"Junior CS jobs are dead." = Prediction

Those are not interchangeable statements. Putting the wrong one in the wrong place is fucking people up here.

So I wrote this to teach y'all how Rule 7 will work a bit more in the future, as I've just tweaked it again.

We have had trouble with comments that take one person's experience, an assumption about the market, or a feeling about where things are headed and present it as a "universal fact". That creates a hell of a lot of confusing noise for people who are here because they genuinely need career information.

You are absolutely allowed to say the market is bad.
You are absolutely allowed to say you think things are getting worse.
You are absolutely allowed to disagree with someone else's assessment.

What you are not encouraged to do is turn uncertainty into certainty, prediction into fact, or frustration into a verdict on everyone else's career.

So:

Don't promote a prediction to production as though it were verified data. A hypothesis is a hypothesis until the evidence supports it.

Tell us what you know. Tell us what you've experienced. Tell us what you think it means. Tell us what you expect next. Guide people to the best path if you know it.

Just don't collapse those into one sentence, use them to judge others, doompost, or act like a little bug helplessly on its back while encouraging everyone else to turn over too.

And as always: if your comment doesn't help someone figure out what to do next, consider whether you need to post it at all.

Testing new rule to replace Rule 3

Due to some conversations that have happened recently, I realized Rule 3 really wasn't cutting it as far as the direction I want this group to go.

We're not here to require people cite 3 scientific papers in order to even chat in this group. People can talk about whatever interests them... but when assertations/"this is fact" starts coming in, THEN proof is needed.

^((yes this means esoteric stuff too! Why not? It's interesting if you let it be.) ^(Be open to weirdness!))

There's a difference between:

"I've experienced this and I wonder if..."

and

"This is how it works."

The first is exploration. The second is an assertion, and that's where evidence or reasoning comes in.

And if somebody challenges your idea? Fantastic. That's part of the point. Bring your reasoning, look at the evidence, and be willing to discover that you were wrong...or that you were onto something (because people will usually continue the thread if you are.)

You don't have to believe someone's hypothesis. You can challenge it. But you don't get to dictate that someone isn't allowed to explore a question merely because it isn't already scientifically settled. We're science-minded, but we need to be open to things that science hasn't discovered yet or studied much of yet.

^((like the female body and how our hormones react to meds already developed...))

That's the direction I'm trying to take r/Polymath: bring the ideas, make the connections, defend what you assert, and keep learning.

The new Rule 3 is a test run. If we find that the wording needs work, we'll adjust it. That's how rules work around here. Hope you're used to them changing! I won't punish/remove stuff when I change a rule for a good long time, a few weeks usually, just so people have time to adjust.

😁😁😁

🚨🚨New Resource Added: Skilled Trades Career Guide

This isn't just a list of trades. For each trade, we've included:

• Related trades it commonly works alongside or for
• Generally required licensing/certification
• Entry paths - including apprenticeships, schools, and on-the-job routes
• Who actually hires that trade
• Equipment/materials needed to get started (company provided or self-starter)
• Whether AI is likely to replace the work, or how it may change how it's done in the future

The goal is to help someone go from:

“I don't know how to get into that.”

To literally having the path laid out for you - if you're willing to do it.

The list includes mechanical, manufacturing, transportation, aviation, personal services, utilities, crafts, and other skilled occupations. We have intentionally left off medical trades for this list but may add it later.

The resource is free to use and download. Save this. Download it. Send it to someone who needs it. This will open Google Sheets because Reddit does not have functionality for this type of upload.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1w23NYX6kn8TDo-jG_pgYZYSOoaTImsj4DHnXBlhvmvM/edit?usp=sharing

AI DISCLOSURE: This resource was created in partnership with ChatGPT. A project covering this many occupations, licensing systems, career pathways, and sources would be impossible or at best take years, for one person to research and organize manually - let alone keep up to date. AI was used as a research and synthesis tool, with career-services-professional human direction and judgment throughout. Please use the guide as a starting point and verify important requirements with authoritative sources in your state.

If you spot a trade we've missed, an outdated requirement, or something that needs correcting, modmail us.

You don't have to know your path yet.

Sometimes you just need to see how many paths there actually are...there's much more than "Plumbing and Electrical".

Due to a thread that went quickly off the rails - new rule changes.

Rules 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 have been tweaked and changed. Please give em a read.
We're not gonna have that last problem again. No more judging intelligences EVEN IF they are coming off as feigned. Even if they are obviously feigned. After today, I very sincerely doubt people can determine and use that rule wisely and honestly, so it's gone.

We need a few more mods!

Hi all. While we have a decent amount of mods, it's becoming clear we need another mod or two to help primarily with doompost/doomcomment removal.

Do you live on reddit? Can you commit to jumping on once or twice a day to remove stuff and clear reported stuff?
Do you wish to be of help to people more, even in a small way?
Do you like cohesive teams that have their shit together and an easy moderation style?

I just turned on the mod applications again, come join us on the mod side of things!
https://www.reddit.com/r/cscareers/application/

You do need approx 1000 post/comment karma to stop your account from being shadowbanned by Reddit. I've noticed every time I've made someone mod under 500 karma - they get shadowbanned. So 1000 is probably safe and people know the way of Reddit well enough by then.

A long listen but worth it. She sent me to school!

I like her info, what happened to her, and what we would need to implement to fix the system. Worth the long listen. (I am not in her state or district.)

🚨 New Resource Added: Staffing Agencies Across All 50 States

One of the biggest barriers to finding work is simply knowing where to look.

Over the past several weeks, we've been working on a new career resource for all RSCN communities:

Staffing Agencies in All 50 States

https://www.reddit.com/mod/almosthomeless/wiki/index/staffingagencies

  • Every U.S. state
  • 2–3 major cities per state (or general Statewide for the smaller/less dense states)
  • Multiple staffing and employment agencies for each city
  • Organized into an easy-to-browse resource on our Wiki

If you're looking for temporary work, permanent employment, warehouse jobs, office work, manufacturing, healthcare, or simply trying to get a paycheck coming in quickly, staffing agencies can often be one of the fastest paths back into employment.

This resource is completely free for our community to use. It was developed with 0% AI involvement and the person who developed it, a redditor, was paid reasonably for their time out of my own pocket.

If you know of an agency not on this list OR see a dead link, we'd love to hear about it in the comments so us mods can continue improving this resource over time.

We can't remove every barrier people face. But every barrier we can remove, helps.

Pin this in your Favorites, Save this post, Share it to other communities if you wish.

If you can't be of help to someone, scroll untill you can.

Reminder: This is a career advice community, not a career regret community.

If someone is asking what to do next, comments telling them they "picked the wrong degree," "should have known better," or that they're simply out of luck are not helpful and will increasingly be removed. We aren't here to judge people for their lack of psychic ability. Not a single one of us here has it either to know better.

The market has changed. People can't go back and choose a different degree. Help them with the decision they're facing today by:
Helping them pivot their skills
Help them see how their current skillset works for other jobs near the industry.
Help them see what else they need to develop to get into where the jobs in CS are now.

Practical advice is welcome. Industry insight is welcome. Honest discussions about the market are welcome.

Kicking people while they're down isn't.
You get 4 chances in this group to adjust your communication style...leave communications you'd be proud of.

How do we take our lives back from...*waves hand at the state of things*?

Some people have asked on my previous post what they can do. Well, the answer is twofold and this is part 1. Recommend you write down some ideas you can do from this video to start on. (and you have to follow through on it. There is no try, only do.)

Part 2 will come eventually when I find a decent video. And I can't advocate for violence (reddit no likee). But there are ways...feel free to follow my acct to keep notified when I post a part 2.

It is policy. Not you. Not me. Not us.

What shall we do?

  1. www.5calls.org < tell all your elected officials, weekly, how much you don't like these numbers and demand they put policy in place to change it. Be stern, but polite. In that calm "you have 5 seconds to comply or shit hits the fan" way.

  2. Join an organization. Literally any. Any trying to make waves. (I don't want to suggest any because that is personal to you.) I protest regularly and read all emails and hit up online events.

  3. Put yourself onto committees in your town. It helps your town/city. They are volunteer but can be done with a job pretty easily nowadays.

Group Discussion Thread: How do you like the group overall, now that changes have been made?

As you all may have seen, a few weeks ago I announced changes that were made within that previous week, due to a sudden jump in membership and discussions and of course, problems. Think I got most everything set and trained 4 new mods and all.

After about 4 days, I got sick and was out for 2 full weeks, but the new mods did wonderfully for being brand new, and held down the fort pretty well!

I am still not fully back to my previous bubbly, energetic self, but on the mend. I am undiagnosed with an official thing, but the symptom is always the same - a very sudden drop of energy that glues me to my bed or sofa. Can last days to weeks and I sleep 10-11 hours and feel not at all rested, till it lets up slowly.

ANYWAY I wanted to check in with everyone, the whole group, and get feedback on how you like things, have you noticed the changes? Do you see anything for this group's future? Any support you'd like to see (other than a rich billionaire here throwing $ at people? Trust me I'd love to see that, too!)

What do you think we can be doing even better?

Thank you all! Especially if you stuck around through The Jump and held on, continuing to help people in the process. You in particular are why I mod this group. Having a safe place for everyone to come, get a tiny bit of support, find like-minded people, we need groups like this on Reddit.

Listen to it all, I loved her last line!

Did you notice that only one other elected official had some idea of the data? *No one else* knew a bit about the subject?

Voting time is coming soon. Vote for the smart over the experienced. (Even better if they are smart asses from time to time!)
